Definition
A programming mistake in which a program writes more into a fixed-size memory area (a buffer) than it can hold, so the extra data spills into nearby memory. Attackers can use it to crash the program or to run their own code.
Example
Typing 10 letters into a box made for 8 can overwrite the 2 memory cells next to it if the program does not check the length; memory-safe languages such as Python, Java or Rust prevent this.
