A tree-shaped data structure that always keeps the smallest item (min-heap) or the largest item (max-heap) at the top, so it can be taken out quickly; it is the normal way to build a priority queue. In databases, a heap (heap file) is a table whose rows are stored in no particular order, without a clustered index.
