A database, also called a wide-column store, that keeps each row under a row key and groups the row's columns into named column families. Different rows may have different columns, so a table can be very wide and mostly empty. It writes huge amounts of data fast and quickly reads a few columns of very many rows. Apache Cassandra, HBase and Google Bigtable are examples.

No Kurdish source names it. Changed at the merge (2026-10-18) from کۆگای ستوونی ("column store") to the literal کۆگای خێزانی ستوون (column-family store): the course deck's "columns instead of rows" describes columnar (column-oriented) storage, a different design used by analytic warehouses, and the Kurdish name should not repeat that mix-up. For the same reason the English aliases "column store" and "columnar database" were removed. کۆگای ستوونی is kept as an alternative because students may meet it; کۆگای ستوونی فراوان (wide-column store) follows the lesson dba-nosql-and-big-data. Uses the registry's ستوون (column).
