Definition
A list that goes from each word to the pages that contain it (and where in each page), like the index at the back of a book. It is 'inverted' because a page lists its words, but the index lists, for each word, its pages.
Example
In the inverted index, «Erbil» → pages 1 and 3; a search for Erbil reads that one line instead of opening every page.
