Definition
When light inside glass hits the edge at a shallow angle, none of it escapes: it all reflects back inside. This keeps light in the core of a , because the core's glass bends light more than the cladding around it.
Example
Shine a torch into one end of a long, bent fibre and the light comes out of the other end, because it reflects thousands of times inside.
