A key with no meaning of its own, such as an automatic number, added to a table only to identify each row. It is never NULL and is usually made with auto increment.

order_id INT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY gives the orders the numbers 1, 2, 3 …, which mean nothing outside the database.

دەستکرد (artificial) as in the registry's artificial-intelligence; it says what a surrogate key is. The deck's example (the students' mobile numbers) is not a surrogate key, because a phone number has a meaning in the real world; the lesson should correct this.
