Definition

The number of different digits that a number system uses. Each place is worth base times the place on its right; the base is written as a small subscript, as in (1011)2(1011)_2.

Example

In (725)8(725)_8 the base is 8, so only the digits 0 to 7 are allowed.

Note on the Kurdish term

the KRG school maths glossary (grades 7–12) gives base = «بنچینە»; Barzinji's computer dictionary («فەرهەنگی کۆمپیوتەر») (p. 29) explains that in the binary system «دەڵێین بنچینەکەی دووە». The id is number-base because «بنچینە» (and English base) also names the base of a power.
