Being the same on both sides of a line or a point. A graph is symmetric when one half is a mirror image of the other (about a line) or looks the same after a half turn (about a point); a matrix is symmetric when it equals its own transpose ($A = A^T$); a data distribution is symmetric when its two sides match.
