On the , −3-3 and 3 sit on opposite sides of 0, yet both are 3 units away from it. The absolute value of a number is exactly this: its distance from 0, whatever the direction. We write it between two vertical bars: ∣−3∣=3|-3| = 3 and ∣3∣=3|3| = 3.

The definition: two cases

The course gives the formal definition as a rule with two cases:

∣x∣={x,if x≥0−x,if x<0|x| = \begin{cases} x, & \text{if } x \ge 0 \\ -x, & \text{if } x < 0 \end{cases}

Read it like this: if the number is positive or zero, keep it as it is. If it is negative, take its opposite, −x-x. The opposite of a negative number is positive: for x=−5x = -5, −x=−(−5)=5-x = -(-5) = 5.

∣x∣|x| is the larger of xx and −x-x∣x∣|x| گەورەترەکەی xx و −x-xـە

From the definition the course draws a few remarks. The first one: the absolute value is the larger of the two numbers xx and −x-x.

∣x∣=max⁡{x,−x}|x| = \max\{x, -x\}

Why does it work? xx and −x-x are opposites, so one of them is ≥0\ge 0 and the other is ≤0\le 0 (both are 0 when x=0x = 0). The larger one is always the one that is not negative — and that is exactly the distance from 0.

∣x∣=x2|x| = \sqrt{x^2}, and a trap∣x∣=x2|x| = \sqrt{x^2}، لەگەڵ تەڵەیەک

Squaring a number removes its sign: (−3)2=9(-3)^2 = 9 and 32=93^2 = 9. The then brings back the size, never a sign: 9=3\sqrt{9} = 3. So:

∣x∣=x2|x| = \sqrt{x^2}

This trap returns in inequalities: when you take the square root of x2x^2, you get ∣x∣|x|, not xx. Forget it and you lose half of the answer. See a real homework example in Absolute value equations and inequalities.

xx and −x-x are mirror images across 0: the same distance, opposite sides. For example ∣−4∣=∣4∣=4|-4| = |4| = 4. With letters it works too: ∣−(a−b)∣=∣a−b∣|-(a-b)| = |a-b|, that is, ∣b−a∣=∣a−b∣|b-a| = |a-b|.

This is also why the graph of y=∣x∣y = |x| has : the left arm of the V is the mirror image of the right arm in the yy-axis (see the last frame of the animation above).

The distance between two numbers

∣x∣|x| measures the distance from xx to 0. Move the starting point and you get the most useful idea of this chapter: the distance between two numbers aa and bb is the absolute value of their difference.

The order does not matter because b−a=−(a−b)b - a = -(a - b) and ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x|. And ∣x∣|x| itself is the special case ∣x−0∣|x - 0|. So read ∣x−3∣|x - 3| as “the distance from xx to 3”. This one reading turns every absolute-value inequality into a picture: ∣x−3∣<2|x - 3| < 2 says “xx is less than 2 away from 3”.

ڕیزبەندییەکە گرنگ نییە چونکە b−a=−(a−b)b - a = -(a - b) و ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x|.

π≈3.14\pi \approx 3.14 is less than 4, so π−4\pi - 4 is negative and its absolute value is its opposite, 4−π4 - \pi.

False. For x=−3x = -3: (−3)2=9=3≠−3\sqrt{(-3)^2} = \sqrt9 = 3 \ne -3. The true rule is x2=∣x∣\sqrt{x^2} = |x|; it equals xx only when x≥0x \ge 0.

Summary

  • ∣x∣|x| is the distance of xx from 0, so ∣x∣≥0|x| \ge 0, and ∣x∣=0|x| = 0 only for x=0x = 0.
  • Definition: ∣x∣=x|x| = x if x≥0x \ge 0 and ∣x∣=−x|x| = -x if x<0x < 0.
  • Same value, other forms: ∣x∣=max⁡{x,−x}=x2|x| = \max\{x, -x\} = \sqrt{x^2}.
  • ∣x∣2=x2|x|^2 = x^2 (the slide's “∣x∣=x2|x| = x^2” is a misprint), −∣x∣≤x≤∣x∣-|x| \le x \le |x| and ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x|.
  • The distance between aa and bb is ∣a−b∣=∣b−a∣|a - b| = |b - a|; read ∣x−3∣|x - 3| as “the distance from xx to 3”.
  • ∣x∣2=x2|x|^2 = x^2 («∣x∣=x2|x| = x^2»ی سلایدەکە هەڵەی چاپە)، −∣x∣≤x≤∣x∣-|x| \le x \le |x| و ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x|.
  • دووریی نێوان aa و bb ∣a−b∣=∣b−a∣|a - b| = |b - a|ـە؛ ∣x−3∣|x - 3| وەک «دووریی xx لە 3ـەوە» بخوێنەوە.
Review questions
Why is ∣x∣|x| never negative?

Because it is a distance. In the definition, a negative xx is replaced by its opposite −x-x, which is positive.

Is x2\sqrt{x^2} equal to xx?

Only when x≥0x \ge 0. In general x2=∣x∣\sqrt{x^2} = |x|, for example (−3)2=3\sqrt{(-3)^2} = 3.

What does ∣x+1∣<4|x + 1| < 4 say in words?∣x+1∣<4|x + 1| < 4

x+1=x−(−1)x + 1 = x - (-1), so it says: the distance from xx to −1-1 is less than 4.
