A fixed-size area of memory where a program keeps data for a short time while it reads, processes or moves it; writing more than it can hold causes a buffer overflow. In logic circuits, a buffer is also a gate whose output equals its input, used to strengthen a signal or drive many inputs.

A name field with a buffer of 8 characters must refuse a 10-character name, or the last 2 characters overwrite the memory next to it.

Note on the Kurdish termتێبینی دەربارەی زاراوە کوردییەکە

Proposed by CYBW6 for cyber-vulnerabilities (Lecture 4 and the owner's note «a buffer is like a container or storage space»). «بافەر» is the word already used inside the CYB proposal buffer-overflow «سەرڕێژبوونی بافەر» and the registry's buffering «بافەرکردن», so the noun keeps the same spelling. Not in the registry or any proposal file (checked 2026-10-23).
