An extra bit added to a group of bits so that the number of 1s is always even (even parity) or always odd (odd parity). The receiver counts the 1s to spot one wrong bit.

With even parity, the 7-bit ASCII code of A, 1000001, has two 1s, so the parity bit is 0: 01000001.
