Whether a count of 1 bits is even or odd, used to detect and repair errors. A makes the number of 1s even (or odd) so one wrong bit can be spotted; RAID 5 and RAID 6 store parity data calculated from the data on the other disks, so the contents of a failed disk can be rebuilt.
