Hardware that keeps working
The hardware that the DBMS runs on must be fault-tolerant: the DBMS should continue to operate even if one of the hardware components fails. The components that must be fault-tolerant are the disk drives, the disk controllers, the CPU, the power supplies and the cooling fans.

One solution is a large disk array: several independent disks, organised to improve reliability and, at the same time, performance. That is RAID.

What RAID doesRAID
A way of joining several disks so that they work as one: to keep the system running when a disk fails (), to make it faster, or both. It uses , and .

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks (in the first papers, 'Inexpensive' Disks). The computer sees the whole array as one disk.

RAID uses three techniques:
- Striping: the data is cut into blocks that are written across the disks in turn, so all disks work at the same time. It makes reading and writing faster but gives no protection.
- Mirroring: every block is written to two disks. If one disk fails, the other still has everything.
- Parity: a small piece of extra data is calculated from the other blocks. If one disk fails, its blocks can be worked out again from the rest.

Aram and Karwan must copy a long notebook before the exam. Striping: each copies half the pages, so it is done in half the time, but if Karwan loses his half, half the notes are gone. Mirroring: both copy every page; it takes twice the paper, but losing one notebook loses nothing.

The RAID levelsئاستەکانی RAID
RAID 0 and RAID 1RAID 0 و RAID 1
RAID 0 (striping only). Block 1 goes to disk 1, block 2 to disk 2, block 3 to disk 1 again, and so on. Both disks work at once, so it is fast, and all the space can be used. But there is no redundancy: if one disk fails, every file that is bigger than one block loses some of its blocks, so in practice all the data is lost. Use it only when the data does not matter or can be recovered quickly from somewhere else.
RAID 1 (mirroring). Every write goes to both disks, and a read can come from either. One disk can fail and nothing is lost. The price is space: two 2 TB disks give only 2 TB. Writes are quick (there is no parity to calculate), so RAID 1 is popular for a database's log files.
RAID 1 ().
The RAID levelsئاستەکانی RAID
RAID 5 and RAID 6: parityRAID 5 و RAID 6: پاریتی
Parity is extra data calculated from the other blocks of a stripe. Real RAID uses a bit operation called XOR, but the idea works with addition: disk 1 holds 3, disk 2 holds 5, and the parity block holds 3 + 5 = 8. If disk 2 dies, the controller calculates 8 − 3 = 5: the lost value is back.
RAID 5 stores one parity block in every stripe and moves it from disk to disk, so no single disk is overloaded. It survives one failed disk and loses only one disk's worth of space. The cost is writing: changing one small block means reading the old block and the old parity and writing both again (two reads and two writes).
RAID 6 stores two different parity blocks in every stripe, so it survives any two failed disks. This matters more as disks get bigger: rebuilding a large disk takes hours, and a second disk may fail during that time. It costs two disks' worth of space and makes writing even slower than RAID 5.
Compares RAID 5 and RAID 6: one or two parity blocks in every stripe, and how many failed disks each one survives.

The RAID levelsئاستەکانی RAID
RAID 10: mirrors, then stripesRAID 10:
RAID 10 (also written RAID 1+0) first makes mirrored pairs, then stripes the data across the pairs. It needs at least four disks and gives half of the total space. It is fast for both reading and writing, because there is no parity to calculate. It survives one failed disk in each pair, but not both disks of the same pair.

When a disk fails, a RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10 array keeps working, but it is degraded: slower, and with less protection (or none) until the lost disk is rebuilt. Rebuilding means copying or recalculating all its data onto a new disk, which runs in the background and can take hours.

Hot swapping means taking out the broken disk and putting in a new one while the server keeps running, with no power-down. Hot spares and hot swapping make the dangerous degraded time as short as possible.

Principles for data controllers
The module ends with the rules for handling other people's personal data. Three words first. Personal data is any information about a person who can be identified, directly or indirectly: a name, an ID number, a location, an online username. That person is the data subject. The data controller is the organisation (or person) that decides why and how the personal data is processed.
GDPR is a European Union law. It also applies to organisations outside the EU when they offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour there (Article 3). Other countries have their own data-protection laws, so find out which law applies where you work. The principles below are a good guide everywhere.

- (a) RAID 10: fast for many small writes (no parity) and survives a disk failure.
- (b) RAID 0: fastest and uses all the space; losing it costs only time, because the originals are safe.
- (c) RAID 6: good use of space, and survives a second failure during the long rebuild of a large disk.
- (d) RAID 1: two disks, a full copy on each, quick writes.

Summary and review
- Fault-tolerant hardware keeps the DBMS running when a part fails. Disks fail most often.
- RAID is only about disks; controllers, power supplies, fans and servers need their own spares.
- RAID 0 = striping (fast, no protection); RAID 1 = mirroring; RAID 5 = one parity (survives 1 disk); RAID 6 = two parity (survives 2); RAID 10 = mirrored pairs, striped.
- Hot spares and hot swapping shorten the risky degraded time. RAID is not a backup.
- Physical security and written policies matter as much as software controls.
- Web traffic must stay private, unchanged and authentic, and the sender must not be able to deny it. TLS (HTTPS) and digital signatures do this today; SSL, S-HTTP, SET/SST, Java applets and ActiveX are obsolete.
- GDPR Article 5: lawfulness, fairness and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality; accountability.
