A function that turns any input into a short value of fixed size, called a hash; the same input always gives the same hash. A hash table uses a fast hash function to choose where each key is stored. Security uses cryptographic hash functions such as SHA-256, whose hash cannot be turned back into the input; md5() and sha1() are too fast and weak for passwords.
