Four questions about a function

A function f:X→Yf:X\to Y gives every input x∈Xx\in X exactly one output f(x)∈Yf(x)\in Y (What is a function?). The set X is the domain, Y is the codomain, and the outputs that really appear form the range (Domain, range and image).

وەک f:X→Yf:X\to Y بە هەر x∈Xx\in X تەنها یەک دەدات، کە f(x)∈Yf(x)\in Yـە (نەخشە چییە؟).

In this lesson we ask four questions about a function. Each question has a name:

  1. Equal functions: is f the same function as another function g?
  2. Constant function: does f give the same output for every input?
  3. One-to-one: do different inputs always give different outputs?
  4. Onto: is every element of Y really used as an output?

Why care? Later you will turn functions around ("which input gave this output?"). That only works for functions that are one-to-one, and it is how logarithms and the inverse trigonometric functions are built.

Equal functions

Two functions are equal when they do exactly the same job. Formally, f:X→Yf:X\to Y and g:X→Yg:X\to Y are equal, and we write f=gf=g, if and only if they give the same output for every input:

بە شێوەی فەرمی، f:X→Yf:X\to Y و g:X→Yg:X\to Y یەکسانن و دەنووسین f=gf=g، ئەگەر و تەنها ئەگەر بۆ هەموو هەمان بدەن:

f=g  ⟺  f(x)=g(x)∀x∈Xf=g \iff f(x)=g(x)\quad \forall x\in X

Read ∀\forall as "for every". Both functions must start from the same domain X and land in the same codomain Y, and they must agree at every single x. One input where they differ (or where only one of them is defined) is enough to make them different functions.

Everyday analogy

Think of two price lists in the bazaar. They are the same list only if they name the same goods and every item has the same price. If one list has an item the other does not have, the lists are different, even if all the shared prices agree.

Where the analogy stops working

A price list is finite, so you can check it line by line. A function on R\mathbb{R} has infinitely many inputs, so we compare the formulas and the domains instead.

Comparing two functions pair by pair

When the domain is a small finite set, write each function as its set of pairs and compare them input by input, like the two price lists. Let A={1,2,3}A=\{1,2,3\}, B={r,s}B=\{r,s\} and f,g:A→Bf,g:A\to B with f={(1,r),(2,s),(3,r)}f=\{(1,r),(2,s),(3,r)\} and g={(1,s),(2,s),(3,r)}g=\{(1,s),(2,s),(3,r)\}.

با A={1,2,3}A=\{1,2,3\}، B={r,s}B=\{r,s\} و f,g:A→Bf,g:A\to B بن، کە f={(1,r),(2,s),(3,r)}f=\{(1,r),(2,s),(3,r)\} و g={(1,s),(2,s),(3,r)}g=\{(1,s),(2,s),(3,r)\}.

Equal functions

Example: x3x\frac{x^3}{x} and xxنموونە: x3x\frac{x^3}{x} و xx

The notes ask: are f(x)=x3xf(x)=\frac{x^3}{x} and g(x)=xg(x)=x equal? Check the two conditions one after the other.

  1. Compare the domains

We cannot divide by 0, so f needs x≠0x\ne0: Df=R∖{0}D_f=\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}. But g is defined everywhere: Dg=RD_g=\mathbb{R}. The domains are different, so f≠gf\ne g.

  2. Compare the values

For x≠0x\ne0 we may cancel: x3x=x2\frac{x^3}{x}=x^2. So f(2)=4f(2)=4 while g(2)=2g(2)=2. In fact x2=xx^2=x only for x=0x=0 or x=1x=1, and 0 is not allowed, so the two graphs share just one point, (1,1)(1,1).

کەواتە f(2)=4f(2)=4 بەڵام g(2)=2g(2)=2.

Definition

A function that gives the same output for every input: f(x)=cf(x)=c. Its graph is a horizontal line.

A function f:X→Yf:X\to Y is constant if there is one fixed value y0∈Yy_0\in Y with f(x)=y0f(x)=y_0 for all x∈Xx\in X. The simplest example is f(x)=5f(x)=5: whatever you put in, 5 comes out. Its graph is a horizontal line, and its range is the one-element set {5}\{5\}.

وەک f:X→Yf:X\to Y نەگۆڕە ئەگەر یەک بەهای جێگیری y0∈Yy_0\in Y هەبێت کە بۆ هەموو x∈Xx\in X f(x)=y0f(x)=y_0.

Everyday analogy

Some shops in the bazaar sell everything for 1,000 dinars. The rule "item → price" is a constant function: a pen, a cup and a toy all give the same output.

Where the analogy stops working

The identity function

Definition

The function that gives back its input unchanged: f(x)=xf(x)=x. Its graph is the line y=xy=x.

The identity function gives back exactly what you put in: I(x)=xI(x)=x for every real x. On any set A it is IA:A→AI_A:A\to A, IA(a)=aI_A(a)=a. Its graph is the diagonal line y=xy=x through the origin, and its range is all of R\mathbb{R}. Different inputs give different outputs and every real number is an output, so it is one-to-one and onto (bijective), as the next screens explain.

IA:A→AI_A:A\to A، IA(a)=aI_A(a)=a.

Why does it matter? It is the “do nothing” function, like adding 0 or multiplying by 1. Later you will compose functions: doing f and then I, or I and then f, gives f again, I∘f=f∘I=fI\circ f=f\circ I=f. And a function and its inverse undo each other, so together they act like I.

I∘f=f∘I=fI\circ f=f\circ I=f.

One-to-one functions

Definition

A function where different inputs always give different outputs: x1≠x2⇒f(x1)≠f(x2)x_1\ne x_2\Rightarrow f(x_1)\ne f(x_2).

A function f:X→Yf:X\to Y is one-to-one (also called injective, or an injection) if different inputs always give different outputs:

The right-hand form is the left-hand rule turned around, so both say: no two different inputs share an output. The second form is the one we use in proofs: start from two equal outputs and show that the inputs were equal.

Many possible student numbers are never given to anyone. That is allowed: one-to-one says nothing about unused outputs (that is the next question, onto).

The horizontal line test

For a function from R\mathbb{R} to R\mathbb{R} you can often see whether it is one-to-one. Draw the horizontal line y=ky=k. It meets the graph exactly at the inputs x with f(x)=kf(x)=k. If some horizontal line meets the graph twice, two different inputs share the output k, so f is not one-to-one. If every horizontal line meets the graph at most once, f is one-to-one.

Animation with two graphs side by side, y = x³ on the left and y = |x| on the right. An orange horizontal line moves down from y = 2.5 to y = −2. It always meets y = x³ in exactly one point. It meets y = |x| in two points while y is positive, in one point at y = 0, and in no point when y is negative.

Do not mix up the two line tests. The vertical line test asks "is this curve a function at all?" (the vertical line test). The horizontal line test asks "is this function one-to-one?". Notice also the lines below the x-axis in the animation: they never meet y=∣x∣y=|x|, because no x gives a negative output. That is a hint for the next question.

A function f:X→Yf:X\to Y is onto (also called surjective, or a surjection) if every element of Y is the image of at least one element of X:

Read ∀\forall as "for every", ∃\exists as "there exists" and the colon as "such that". The range f(X)f(X) is always a part of the codomain Y; f is onto exactly when the range is the whole codomain, so no element of Y is left without an arrow.

The codomain matters. The same formula can be onto with one codomain and not onto with another. f(x)=∣x∣f(x)=|x| as a function R→R\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} is not onto, because −1-1 is never an output. As a function R→[0,∞)\mathbb{R}\to[0,\infty) it is onto: for any y≥0y\ge0, the input x=yx=y gives ∣y∣=y|y|=y.

وەک R→[0,∞)\mathbb{R}\to[0,\infty) گشتگرە: بۆ هەر y≥0y\ge0، x=yx=y بەهای ∣y∣=y|y|=y دەدات.

Bijective functions: one-to-one and onto

Definition

A function that is both and : every element of Y is the image of exactly one x. Only bijective functions have an inverse function.

If f:X→Yf:X\to Y is both one-to-one and onto, it is called bijective (a bijection, or a one-to-one correspondence). Then every element of Y is the image of exactly one element of X: onto gives "at least one", one-to-one gives "at most one".

Everyday analogy

At a taxi garage, every passenger (X) gets into one taxi (Y). One-to-one: no two passengers share a taxi. Onto: no taxi leaves empty. Bijective: each taxi carries exactly one passenger, so passengers and taxis are paired off, and there are just as many of each.

Where the analogy stops working

Real taxis carry up to four people; in the analogy a shared taxi is exactly what breaks one-to-one. For infinite sets you cannot count, but pairing off still works.

Animation of an arrow diagram from X = {1, 2, 3} to Y = {a, b, c}. Arrows 1 → a and 2 → b appear. Then 3 → a appears in orange: a is hit twice, not one-to-one. Next c is circled in orange: no arrow reaches it, not onto. Finally the arrow from 3 moves to c, every element of Y is hit exactly once, and the function is bijective.

Let f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}, f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3. We prove both properties, so f is bijective.

با f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}، f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3.

  1. One-to-one

Suppose two outputs are equal: x13=x23x_1^3=x_2^3. Every real number has exactly one real cube root, so taking cube roots of both sides gives x1=x2x_1=x_2. Equal outputs came from equal inputs.

    x13−x23=(x1−x2)(x12+x1x2+x22)=(x1−x2)[(x1+x22)2+34x22]x_1^3-x_2^3=(x_1-x_2)\left(x_1^2+x_1x_2+x_2^2\right)=(x_1-x_2)\left[\left(x_1+\tfrac{x_2}{2}\right)^2+\tfrac34x_2^2\right]

A second way: the bracket on the right is a sum of squares, so it is 0 only when x1=x2=0x_1=x_2=0. So x13=x23x_1^3=x_2^3 forces x1−x2=0x_1-x_2=0.

  2. Onto

Take any y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}. Choose x=y3=y1/3x=\sqrt[3]{y}=y^{1/3} (the real cube root). Then f(y3)=(y3)3=yf(\sqrt[3]{y})=(\sqrt[3]{y})^3=y. For example y=−8y=-8 comes from x=−2x=-2, because (−2)3=−8(-2)^3=-8.

    هەر y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}ـێک وەربگرە. x=y3=y1/3x=\sqrt[3]{y}=y^{1/3} هەڵبژێرە ( ڕاستی).

This "restricting the domain" is exactly how inverse functions such as x\sqrt{x} are made.

f:[0,∞)→[0,∞)f:[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty) وەربگرە.

Summary

  • Equal: f=gf=g means the same domain and codomain and f(x)=g(x)f(x)=g(x) for every x. Cancelling a fraction can change the domain.
  • Constant: f(x)=y0f(x)=y_0 for all x; the graph is a horizontal line.
  • The identity function I(x)=xI(x)=x gives back its input; its graph is the line y=xy=x.
  • One-to-one: f(x1)=f(x2)⇒x1=x2f(x_1)=f(x_2)\Rightarrow x_1=x_2; every horizontal line meets the graph at most once.
  • Onto: every y in the codomain is reached; range = codomain. The answer depends on the codomain.
  • Bijective: both; every y comes from exactly one x. x3x^3 and 3x−53x-5 are bijective on R\mathbb{R}; ∣x∣|x| and 5 are neither.
  • I(x)=xI(x)=x
Review questions
What is the quickest way to show that a function is NOT one-to-one?

Find two different inputs with the same output, for example f(−1)=f(1)f(-1)=f(1) for ∣x∣|x|.

How do you prove that a function IS onto?

Take any y in the codomain, solve f(x)=yf(x)=y, and check that the x you found lies in the domain.

Why is the constant function 5 not onto R\mathbb{R}?

Its range is {5}\{5\}, so any other real number, such as 7, is never an output.
