Task Environments: PEAS and the Eight Propertiesژینگەکانی ئەرک: PEAS و هەشت تایبەتمەندییەکە
How to describe the problem an agent must solve: what an environment is, PEAS with six worked examples, the eight property pairs (observable, deterministic, episodic, static, discrete, single-agent, known, and the old name accessible) with one merged comparison table, and a classification exercise for solitaire, backgammon, internet shopping and taxi driving with corrected answers.

Where does an agent live?
In the previous lesson you met agents, sensors and actuators. Now we look closely at the environment. The course notes describe it in three ways:
- everything in the world that surrounds the agent but is not part of it;
- the situation in which an agent is present;
- the place where the agent lives and works — it gives the agent something to sense and to act upon.
To design an agent, we first describe its task environment — the "problem" the agent must solve. We do it in two steps: list its PEAS, then decide which properties the environment has.

PEAS stands for Performance measure, Environment, Actuators and Sensors. Here is PEAS for an automated taxi:
- P — Performance measure: a safe, fast, legal and comfortable trip; maximise profits.
- E — Environment: roads, other traffic, pedestrians, customers.
- A — Actuators: steering wheel, accelerator, brake, signal, horn.
- S — Sensors: cameras, LIDAR (measures distance with laser light), speedometer, GPS, odometer (counts the distance driven), engine sensors, keyboard (for the passenger to type a destination).

Eight ways environments differ
Following Russell and Norvig's textbook, the course notes compare environments in eight pairs. Each pair is a question you ask about the environment:

- Static or dynamic?
- Discrete or continuous?
- Deterministic or stochastic?
- Single-agent or multi-agent?

Eight ways environments differ
Fully or partially observable?
If the agent can see everything in its environment that matters, the environment is fully observable — as the name says. Chess is an example: the computer (the agent) sees the whole chessboard and can analyse every move. This complete view lets it decide from the full state of the game.
If the agent sees only part of its environment, the environment is partially observable. A self-driving car cannot see what is in front of the truck ahead of it; it has only a little information about the road, so it must decide with incomplete information. Fully observable environments are easier: the agent does not need to keep an internal state (a memory of the world) to track what it cannot see. (Agents that do keep one are the model-based agents in Types of agents.)
If the agent has no sensors at all, the environment is unobservable. The old names say the same thing: in an accessible environment the agent can get complete and accurate information — for example an empty room whose state is defined only by its temperature. An inaccessible environment hides information — for example the weather on Earth, because it is impossible to measure all the tiny factors that affect it.
Eight ways environments differ
Deterministic or stochastic?
In a deterministic environment, the current state and the chosen action completely decide the next state. Every action has a predictable result. Chess is a good example: the rules are fixed, and if a player moves a piece, the new position is certain — there is no randomness. If the environment is also fully observable, the agent never has to worry about uncertainty.
In a stochastic environment, actions have random or unpredictable results; the agent cannot fully decide what happens. In real driving, when a car stops at a stop sign, it cannot be sure what the other drivers will do next. Weather is a classic example: it depends on many unpredictable things, so even with today's data tomorrow's exact weather cannot be known, and tiny changes in the starting conditions can lead to very different results.
Eight ways environments differ
Episodic or sequential?
In an episodic environment, the agent's experience is a series of separate, one-shot episodes. Each action is independent and does not affect future actions, so only the current percept is needed. Example: in image recognition, each picture is separate — the agent classifies each one on its own.
In a sequential environment, actions have consequences for the future: what the agent does now changes what it can do next and what challenges it will face, as in a video game or in chess. So the agent needs a memory of past actions to choose the next best action.
Eight ways environments differ
Static or dynamic?
A static environment does not change while the agent is deliberating (thinking about what to do). A crossword puzzle is static: it stays the same until the solver decides on an answer. Static environments are easy, because the agent does not need to keep looking at the world while it decides.
A dynamic environment can change by itself while the agent is thinking. The street around a car is dynamic: other cars move and traffic lights change, so the agent must keep watching the road at every action. Taxi driving is the classic example.
Eight ways environments differ
Discrete or continuous?
A discrete environment has a limited (finite) number of percepts and actions. In chess the pieces can move only in a few fixed directions, so there is a finite number of possible moves.
In a continuous environment there are very many actions and options — in fact unlimited ones, because values change smoothly. A self-driving car works in a continuous environment: it can choose any speed and any steering angle, and react to countless situations.
Eight ways environments differ
Single-agent or multi-agent?
In a single-agent environment only one agent is working, by itself — for example, a vacuum robot cleaning an empty room, with no other agent to work with or compete against.
In a multi-agent environment several agents act. In a football video game there are many players (agents) on both teams; each one's moves affect the others, so every player has to think about what the others are doing. Designing an agent for a multi-agent environment brings new problems — cooperation, competition, communication — that a single-agent environment does not have.
Eight ways environments differ
Known or unknown?
This pair is a little different: known and unknown are not really a feature of the environment but of the agent's knowledge — does it know the "rules" of how the world works?
- Known: the results of all actions are known to the agent. In a simple board game, the player knows what will happen after each move.
- Unknown: the agent must first learn how the world works. A robot exploring a new building must learn the layout before it can decide well.
Do not mix this pair with observability. A known environment can be partially observable: in Klondike solitaire you know all the rules, but many cards are face down. An unknown environment can be fully observable: in a new video game you can see the whole screen but do not yet know what the buttons do.

In summary, the exercise compares games, shopping and taxi rides on the same properties to show how much information each agent can see, how predictable its world is, and which other factors shape how each environment works.
Exercise: classify four environments
Why these answers?
- Observable. Backgammon: yes — both players see all the pieces; nothing is secret. Internet shopping: no — shipping costs, taxes or whether a product is in stock may stay hidden until you go to checkout. Taxi: no — the driver cannot see future traffic, accidents or other surprises.
- Deterministic. Solitaire: yes — once the cards are shuffled, the same moves in the same order always give the same result (the uncertainty comes from the hidden cards, not from chance during play). Backgammon: no — dice. Internet shopping: partly — descriptions and prices are predictable, but stock and shipping are not fully predictable until you order. Taxi: no — traffic jams, weather and accidents.
- Episodic. No for all four: every move in solitaire changes the cards you can use later; each backgammon turn affects the next; every search or cart action changes the products shown and the total price; every route choice changes the rest of the taxi ride.
- Static. Solitaire: yes — nothing changes unless you move. Taxi: no — traffic and weather change all the time. Backgammon and internet shopping are marked Semi (see the note below).
- Discrete. Solitaire, backgammon and internet shopping: yes — clear, separate moves and steps (search, add to cart, pay). Taxi: no — speed, position and traffic flow change continuously.
- Single-agent. Solitaire: yes. Backgammon: no — two players against each other. Internet shopping: yes — you make the decisions, except in auctions with many bidders. Taxi: no — other drivers and pedestrians act too.

Why is a fully observable environment easier for an agent?
The agent sees the complete state at every moment, so it does not need an internal state (memory) to track hidden parts of the world.
What is the difference between episodic and sequential?
Episodic: each action is independent and needs only the current percept. Sequential: actions affect the future, so the agent needs memory of the past.

Some cells can be argued either way — for example, a photo may be treated as continuous or discrete, and the textbook calls image analysis semi-dynamic. What matters is that you can explain your reason.

Summary
- The environment is everything around the agent that is not part of it; the task environment is the problem the agent must solve.
- PEAS describes a task environment: Performance measure, Environment, Actuators, Sensors.
- Seven property pairs: observable, deterministic, episodic, static (and semi-dynamic), discrete, single-agent, known — plus the old name accessible.
- Known/unknown is about the agent's knowledge, not about what it can see.
- The environment type largely decides the agent design; the real world is the hardest case in every pair.
