How machine learning learns from examplesفێربوونی ئامێر چۆن لە نموونەکانەوە فێر دەبێت
A normal program follows rules that a programmer writes, for example: if an email contains 'You have won', move it to spam. A machine-learning system is different: nobody writes the rules. It finds the patterns itself by looking at thousands of examples.
ئاسایی پەیڕەوی ئەو یاسایانە دەکات کە دەینووسێت، بۆ نموونە: ئەگەر ڕستەی You have wonی تێدا بوو، بیخەرە ناو . سیستەمێکی جیاوازە: کەس یاساکان نانووسێت. خۆی بە سەیرکردنی هەزاران نموونە شێوازەکان دەدۆزێتەوە.
- Collect examplesکۆکردنەوەی نموونە
Collect thousands of examples with the right answer, for example emails labelled spam or not spam. This is the training data.
هەزاران نموونە لەگەڵ وەڵامە ڕاستەکەیان کۆ بکەرەوە، بۆ نموونە کە وەک یان نا نیشانە کراون. ئەمە .
- Trainڕاهێنان
The algorithm studies the examples and finds patterns, such as strange links or words like 'free'.
نموونەکان شی دەکاتەوە و شێوازەکان دەدۆزێتەوە، وەک نامۆ یان وشەی وەک free.
- Testتاقیکردنەوە
Try the model on emails it has never seen, and check how often it is right.

- Use and improveبەکارهێنان و باشترکردن
Use the model on new emails. When users mark a mistake, it becomes a new example, so the system keeps learning.

Reading: AI at work in Erbilخوێندنەوە: ژیریی دەستکرد لە شوێنی کار لە هەولێر
Rawa Soft is a small software company in Erbil with twelve employees. Last year the company started using AI tools, and the work has changed a lot.
The programmers now use an AI assistant that suggests code. "It writes the boring parts quickly," says Aram, a senior developer, "but it sometimes makes mistakes, so we always check and test its code." The company has also added a chatbot to its website. It answers customers in English, Arabic and Kurdish at any time of the day.
Not everyone is happy. Dilan, a translator who works with the company, says that machine translation has taken some of her simpler work. "Online translators are much better than five years ago, but Kurdish is still difficult for machines. Somebody has to check the translations."
There are also questions about data. The chatbot learns from customers' messages, so the company must protect their privacy. "We never use personal information without permission," the manager explains.
What will happen next? Aram thinks AI will probably not replace programmers, but programmers who use AI may replace programmers who don't. "In ten years, most of our code will be written with AI help," he says. "Our job will be to decide what to build and to check that it is safe and fair."

- likely: use 'is likely to + verb' (AI is likely to change this job) or 'It is likely that + clause' (It is likely that prices will fall). 'Will likely' is common in American English; in formal British English, prefer 'will probably' or 'is likely to'.

Listening and speaking: will robots take our jobs?گوێگرتن و قسەکردن: ئایا ڕۆبۆتەکان کارەکانمان دەبەن؟
Did you see the news? A bank in Erbil is using a chatbot instead of call-centre staff.
هەواڵەکەت بینی؟ بانکێک لە هەولێر لە جیاتی کارمەندانی ناوەندی پەیوەندی بەکار دەهێنێت.
I'm not surprised. I think robots and AI will take most of our jobs by 2035.
بەلامەوە سەیر نییە. پێم وایە تا ساڵی ٢٠٣٥ و زۆربەی کارەکانمان دەبەن.
Most of our jobs? I doubt it. They'll probably change many jobs, but that's different.
زۆربەی کارەکانمان؟ گومانم هەیە. بە ئەگەری زۆر زۆرێک لە کارەکان دەگۆڕن، بەڵام ئەوە جیاوازە.
What do you mean?
مەبەستت چییە؟
Look at my uncle's pharmacy in Duhok. The computer checks the medicines now, but he still talks to every patient. Machines are unlikely to replace that.
سەیری دەرمانخانەکەی مامم لە دهۆک بکە. ئێستا دەرمانەکان دەپشکنێت، بەڵام ئەو هێشتا لەگەڵ هەموو نەخۆشێکدا قسە دەکات. پێناچێت ئامێرەکان جێگەی ئەوە بگرنەوە.
OK, but what about drivers? Self-driving cars might replace taxi drivers.
باشە، ئەی شۆفێرەکان؟ لەوانەیە ئۆتۆمبێلی بێ شۆفێر جێگەی شۆفێرانی تەکسی بگرنەوە.
Maybe in some cities, but not in Sulaimani's traffic! I don't think that will happen soon.
لەوانەیە لە هەندێک شاردا، بەڵام لە قەرەباڵغیی هاتوچۆی سلێمانیدا نا! پێم وانییە بەم زووانە ڕوو بدات.
Ha! Fair point. But one thing is certain: we'll need new skills.
ها! ڕاست دەکەیت. بەڵام یەک شت دڵنیایە: پێویستمان بە کارامەیی نوێ دەبێت.
Definitely. By the time we graduate, AI tools will have become part of every office.
بێگومان. تا کاتی دەرچوونمان، ئامرازەکانی بوونەتە بەشێک لە هەموو ئۆفیسێک.
So we should learn to use them well, and to check their work.
کەواتە باشترە فێر ببین چۆن بە باشی بەکاریان بهێنین و کارەکانیان بپشکنین.
Read these predictions about Kurdistan in 2035. For each one, say how likely it is (use the certainty scale) and give a reason. Then discuss with a partner. 1. Most cars in Erbil will drive themselves. 2. AI tutors will replace teachers. 3. Every home will have at least one IoT device. 4. Students will use VR headsets instead of laptops. 5. Online translators will translate Kurdish perfectly.

Model answer: 1. Most cars in Erbil probably won't drive themselves by 2035, because the roads and traffic rules are not ready. 2. AI tutors are unlikely to replace teachers, but they will probably help students practise at home. 3. It is highly likely that every home will have at least one IoT device; many homes already have a smart TV. 4. VR headsets might become common in some courses, but they probably won't replace laptops. 5. Online translators will definitely get better, but I doubt that they will translate Kurdish perfectly.

Writing: predictions and a for-and-against paragraphنووسین: پێشبینی و پەرەگرافێکی بۆ و دژ
Write a short paragraph (80–120 words) with five predictions about technology in Kurdistan in 2035. Use at least four different degrees of certainty and one future continuous or future perfect sentence.
پەرەگرافێکی کورت (٨٠ تا ١٢٠ وشە) بنووسە کە پێنج پێشبینیی تێدا بێت دەربارەی تەکنەلۆجیا لە کوردستان لە ساڵی ٢٠٣٥. لانیکەم چوار ئاستی جیاوازی دڵنیایی و یەک ڕستەی future continuous یان future perfect بەکار بهێنە.

Model answer: In 2035, technology will definitely be part of daily life in Kurdistan. Almost everyone will pay with a phone, so cash will probably become rare. Many farmers are likely to use sensors and drones to check water and crops. Some students might be studying in VR classrooms, but most will still go to university every day. Self-driving taxis are unlikely to appear in our cities soon, because the roads are not ready. Finally, by 2035 online translators will have become much better at Kurdish, but people will still need human translators for important documents.

Write a for-and-against paragraph (100–140 words): 'Should universities allow students to use AI chatbots for homework?' Give at least two advantages and two disadvantages, use On the other hand or However, and finish with your opinion.

Model answer: AI chatbots can be useful for students. One advantage is that they explain difficult ideas at any time, even at midnight before an exam. They can also check grammar and give examples, so students can learn faster. On the other hand, chatbots sometimes give wrong answers that sound correct, and students may copy them without thinking. A serious drawback is cheating: if a chatbot writes the whole assignment, the student learns nothing, and this is plagiarism. In my opinion, universities should allow chatbots for explaining and checking, but students should write their own work and say clearly when they used AI.

Going further: writing about the future like a professional
Writing about new technology is easy to do badly. Professional writers are careful, precise and honest about what they do not know.
- Avoid hype. Words such as 'revolutionary', 'game-changing' and 'magic' tell the reader nothing. Say what the technology does and how much it improves things: 'cuts translation time by half'.
- AI or machine learning? Machine learning is one part of AI. Not every clever program is AI, and not every kind of automation uses AI: a backup script is automation, not AI.
- AI as a noun: 'AI is changing work' (the field, no article), but 'an AI model', 'an AI system', 'the AI tool we tested' (countable).
- Give dates and sources. 'By 2030, according to the company's own plan, …' is stronger than 'soon'.
- Useful collocations: train a model, deploy a system, collect, process and analyse data, raise ethical concerns, pose a risk, protect privacy, reduce bias.
This press release overclaims. Rewrite it in a calm, professional style with suitable degrees of certainty: 'Our revolutionary AI will completely replace doctors next year. It never makes mistakes and will definitely solve every health problem in the world.'

Model answer: 'Our AI tool is designed to help doctors find problems in X-ray images more quickly. In our tests, it found most of the problems that specialists found, but it also made some mistakes, so a doctor always checks its results. We expect it to be available in two hospitals next year. It is unlikely to replace doctors; instead, it will probably give them more time for their patients.'

What is the difference between a normal program and a machine-learning system?جیاوازیی نێوان بەرنامەیەکی ئاسایی و سیستەمێکی فێربوونی ئامێر چییە؟
A normal program follows rules written by a programmer. A machine-learning system finds patterns itself from many examples (its training data).

What is the difference between VR and AR?جیاوازیی نێوان ڕاستیی گریمانەیی و ڕاستیی زیادکراو چییە؟
VR shows a complete computer-made world. AR adds computer images to the real world, which you can still see.
