You type on a keyboard, you click with a mouse, you touch a screen, you speak to your phone or you show it a QR code. Every device that sends data or commands into a computer is an input device.

Many keyboards have two alphabets printed on the keys, for example English and Kurdish letters. The special keys, however, always have English names. These are the ones you will use most. With a mouse or a touchpad you click; on a touchscreen you tap. These short English verbs are used in instructions everywhere: Click the icon. Swipe left. Pinch to zoom out. Keyboards and mice are not the only input devices. Today we can give a computer data in many other ways.
The most common one is the . Your phone's screen senses the touch of your fingers, so you can tap, swipe and pinch. A lets you write and draw on a tablet more exactly than a finger. Even small sensors are input devices: a fingerprint checks who you are before your phone opens.
Cameras are input devices too. A sends your video to an online class, and the camera on your phone can read a on a restaurant table. At the supermarket, a reads the code on every product and sends it to the shop's computer.
Some input devices listen. A turns your voice into data, and software changes your words into text. Many students in Erbil and Sulaimani now write messages by speaking to their phones.
turn paper into digital images. With software, a library can turn an old printed Kurdish book into text that people can search.
Finally, input devices help people with disabilities. A blind student can type on a Braille keyboard, and a student who cannot use her hands can control a computer with her eyes.

Product pages and adverts mix facts and opinions. A fact can be checked: a number, a feature or a measurement. An opinion is what the writer thinks: best, amazing, perfect, you will love it. Before you buy a device, trust the facts and question the opinions.

Instructions use the imperative: the base form of the verb with no subject. Click Save. Press Enter. Type your password. For a negative instruction, use Don't (or Do not in formal manuals): Don't unplug the scanner while it is working.
Give the purpose first with To + infinitive: To copy the text, press Ctrl + C. To zoom in, spread two fingers apart. Readers then find the step they need quickly.
Order the steps with sequence words: First, … Then, … Next, … After that, … Finally, … In a manual, use a numbered list and keep one action per step.
You learn how to make the imperative (base verb, no subject), how to make it negative with Don't, and how it gives orders and instructions.

Cursor or pointer? In careful writing, the pointer is the arrow that follows the mouse, and the cursor (or insertion point) is the blinking line where text will appear. In everyday English many people use cursor for both.
Press, hit, tap, type, enter. You press a key (hit is informal), tap a touchscreen, type text and enter data, which means type it and confirm it (often with Enter).
