The median: the value in the middle

Line the values up from smallest to largest. The median is the value in the middle: half of the data lie below it and half above it.

Definition

The middle value when the data is sorted; with an even number of values it is the mean of the two middle ones. Half of the data lies on each side.

Why we need it. A small tea house pays its ten people per month (in thousands of dinars): six earn 500, two earn 600, one earns 700 and the owner takes 10 000. The mean is 14900/10=149014900/10 = 1490 — more than any worker earns. The median is 500, which really describes a typical worker. One extreme value pulls the mean far away, but it hardly moves the median.

In a frequency table we cannot see the middle value itself. Why the median formula works

Why it works. We assume the FiF_i values of the median class are spread evenly across it. We still need ∑Fi/2−Fi∗\sum F_i/2 - F_i^* of them to reach the middle, so we walk that fraction of the class width from its lower boundary. On the ogive this is reading the curve at height n/2n/2:

A dashed line at height n/2 = 50 meets the curve above 67.93, and a dashed line drops to the axis there: Me = 66 + (50 − 23)/42 × 3 = 67.93.

Why the mode formula works

Why it works. If the class before is much smaller than the class after (d1>d2d_1 > d_2), the peak leans to the right, and d1/(d1+d2)d_1/(d_1+d_2) is more than 12\tfrac12. If both neighbours are equal, the mode is exactly the midpoint. On a histogram the formula is where two crossing lines meet:

Median and mode in Pythonناوەڕاستە و باو لە Pythonـدا

The statistics module sorts the data for you. median() averages the two middle values when nn is even; median_low() and median_high() return one of the two. mode() returns the first most common value and multimode() returns all of them. median_grouped() uses the same interpolation as the grouped formula: give it the class midpoints, repeated by frequency, and the class width as interval.

ExerciseڕاهێنانWhich class?

A table has frequencies 4, 9, 15, 7, 5 (n=40n = 40). Name the median class and the modal class, and say whether they must always be the same.

Cumulative: 4, 13, 28, 35, 40; n/2=20n/2 = 20, so the 3rd class is the median class. The largest frequency, 15, is also in the 3rd class, so here both are the same. They need not be: with frequencies 6, 3, 3, 3, 5 (n=20n = 20) the median class is the 3rd (cumulative 6, 9, 12 — the first that is ≥10\ge 10) but the modal class is the 1st.

Summary

  • Median: sort, then take the middle value (odd nn) or the mean of the two middle values (even nn). It resists outliers.
  • Grouped median: median class = first cumulative frequency ≥n/2\ge n/2; Me=L.B.L+n/2−Fi∗Fi×LM_e = L.B.L + \frac{n/2 - F_i^*}{F_i} \times L.
  • Mode: the most common value; there may be one, two or none. It works for categories.
  • Grouped mode: modal class = largest frequency; Mo=L.B.L+d1d1+d2×LM_o = L.B.L + \frac{d_1}{d_1+d_2} \times L.
  • Whole-number classes use boundaries (limits ∓0.5\mp 0.5); continuous classes use the limits.
  • Python: median, median_low, median_high, median_grouped, mode, multimode.
Me=L.B.L+n/2−Fi∗Fi×LM_e = L.B.L + \frac{n/2 - F_i^*}{F_i} \times L.
Mo=L.B.L+d1d1+d2×LM_o = L.B.L + \frac{d_1}{d_1+d_2} \times L.
  • Python: median، median_low، median_high، median_grouped، mode، multimode.
Review questions
Why is the median a better “typical salary” than the mean?

A few very high salaries pull the mean up, but they do not change which value is in the middle.

In the median formula, what is Fi∗F_i^*?

The cumulative frequency of all the classes before the median class.

Your grouped mode comes out outside the modal class. What went wrong?

Either the wrong modal class (a negative d1d_1 or d2d_2) or a slip such as d1−d2d_1 - d_2 in the denominator.
