The last lesson changed single pictures. This lesson changes the look of whole slides. Almost everything is on the Design tab: the Themes gallery, the Variants group, and at the far right the Customize group with Slide Size and Format Background. In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, Design Suggestions (Designer) is there too; you also find it on the Home tab.

Themes and variantsتێمەکان و Variants

Before you design a background by hand, try a theme. A theme is a ready-made design made by a designer: colours that match, fonts, effects, a background and the places of the placeholders. One click gives all your slides the same professional look.

Designer looks at what is on your slide — a title, a photo, a list, a chart — and offers finished layouts for it. Select Design > Design Suggestions. The Designer pane opens on the right. Click an idea and your slide changes; press Ctrl+Z if you do not like it.

Custom sizes, Maximize and Ensure Fitقەبارەی تایبەت، Maximize و ⁦Ensure Fit⁩

Custom Slide Size… opens the Slide Size dialog box. In Slides sized for you can choose paper sizes such as A4 Paper or Letter Paper, On-screen Show (16:9), Banner and more. You can also type your own Width and Height (in in, cm or px) and choose the Orientation: Portrait (tall) or Landscape (wide).

When you change the size of slides that already have content, PowerPoint may ask how to scale it:

Bottom: a 16:9 slide changed to 4:3. The colour, or picture behind everything on a . It is white by default; change it with Design > Format Background, for one slide or, with Apply to All, for every slide.

A new blank presentation uses the Office Theme, so its slides have a white background. Other themes bring their own backgrounds. Either way, it is easy to change the background of some slides or of all of them. A background can have four kinds of fill:

  • Solid fill: one colour.
  • Gradient fill: colours that blend slowly into each other.
  • Picture or texture fill: a photo, or a ready-made texture such as wood, paper or stone.
  • Pattern fill: a small design (dots, lines, checks) repeated in two colours.

  1. Select the Design tab, then click Format Background. (Or right-click an empty part of the slide > Format Background….)

  2. The Format Background pane appears on the right.

  • By default the change is for the current slide only (or for the slides you selected in the thumbnail pane).
  • Apply to All at the bottom of the pane puts the same background on every slide at once.
  • Reset Background takes the slide back to the background of its theme.
  • Hide background graphics hides shapes and pictures that the theme puts on the slide.

A photo as the backgroundفۆتۆ وەک باکگراوند

  1. In the Format Background pane, select Picture or texture fill.

  2. Under Picture source, select Insert… and choose From a File, Stock Images, Online Pictures or From Icons.

Imagine you want your school's logo in the corner of all 30 slides, and a different title font. Copying the logo 30 times is slow, and you will miss one. The Slide Master does it once for every slide.

The top in Slide Master view (View > Slide Master). It holds the , colours, and pictures (such as a logo) that every slide based on it shares, so a change made there appears on all of those slides.

The chapter lab has five exercises that build one slide, the 'gallery wall'. Exercises 1–2 are below; exercises 3–5 (pictures, a picture inside text and a photo album) are in the Pictures lab. Part 4 of the target, the oval filled with a stone texture, uses Shape Fill > Texture from the Shapes lesson.

  • Work through them in order. Each one uses something from this chapter. Do not move on until the one before it works.
  • Save as you go: press Ctrl+S after every exercise so nothing is lost.

Start a new blank presentation and check its slide size. Change it to Standard (4:3) and look at what happens to a title and a picture. Then change it back to Widescreen (16:9) and try both Maximize and Ensure Fit (use Ctrl+Z between them).

  2. Add a title and a picture, then Design > Slide Size > Standard (4:3) > Ensure Fit: everything shrinks to fit the narrower slide.
  3. Ctrl+Z, then Standard (4:3) > Maximize: the content keeps its size and the sides may stick out of the slide.
  4. Finally Design > Slide Size > Widescreen (16:9) for the gallery wall.

Change the background of the slide to a pattern fill with small, pale dots, like the target slide.

  2. Fill > Pattern fill, then click a small dotted pattern.

In a new presentation with five slides, apply a theme and choose a variant. Then use the Slide Master to put a small text box with your class name in the bottom-left corner of every slide.
