Why are computers so important?

To understand why computers are so important in daily life, we must look at what they do well — and, just as important, where they fall short. This lesson follows the course's two lists: the advantages of computers and their disadvantages. (What a computer does — its functions — was the subject of What is a computer?.)

The course's sources use slightly different lists. The Kurdish report names five characteristics: speed, accuracy, reliability, versatility and storage capacity. The slides list eight advantages; the study summary calls versatility flexibility. This lesson brings them together:

Speed

A computer is a very fast device, and it can work through very large amounts of data. Its speed is measured in tiny parts of a second:

Speed

A person against a computer

The course says a computer can do millions of calculations in a few seconds, while a person would spend many months on the same task. Check it: suppose a person adds one number every 2 seconds. Adding one million numbers takes 1 000 000×2=2 000 0001\,000\,000 \times 2 = 2\,000\,000 seconds — about 69 working days of 8 hours, more than three months. A computer that needs one nanosecond per addition does it in 1 000 000×10−9=0.0011\,000\,000 \times 10^{-9} = 0.001 seconds: one millisecond.

The last frame says the person needs 2,000,000 seconds: about 69 working days, more than three months.

Accuracy — and garbage in, garbage outوردی و نێوخستەی هەڵە، دەرخستەی هەڵە

Besides being fast, computers are very accurate. The course puts it strongly: computer calculations are “100 % error free” — and then adds the key condition: provided that the input is correct.

That condition is so important that IT people have a saying for it: garbage in, garbage out (GIGO). A computer does exactly what its program says with the data it is given. If a cashier types 15,000 dinars instead of 1,500, the receipt is wrong — the computer added perfectly, but the input was wrong.

Two rows. Top row: correct input 1,500 goes into a computer, which adds correctly, and a correct receipt total of 3,250 comes out. Bottom row: wrong input 15,000 goes into the same computer, which adds just as correctly, and a wrong total of 16,750 comes out. A note says: the computer did not make a mistake — the input did.

The rule that a computer's results are only as good as the and instructions it gets. If the is wrong, the is wrong too, even when the computer works perfectly.

Bad rice, bad pilaw

Give the best cook in the city spoiled rice and you will still get a bad pilaw. The cook did every step right; the ingredient was wrong. A computer is the same: perfect steps with wrong data give a wrong result.

A good cook smells the rice and refuses to use it. A computer notices bad data only if its program checks for it — so good programs test their input, for example by rejecting a mark above 100.

The error is tiny and the computer is not “wrong” — it follows the rules of binary fractions exactly. But programs that handle money usually count in whole dinars or use special decimal types, so that totals always come out exact. The binary system itself is taught in Number systems.

Storage and diligence

Storage capability. A computer can store far more than a human memory, and it can store any type of data: pictures, videos, text and sound. A university can keep every student's record since it opened; an ordinary phone with 128 GB of storage can hold tens of thousands of photos.

Diligence. Unlike people, a computer does not get bored, tired or lose concentration. It can work without a break and repeat the same task a million times with the same speed and the same accuracy. A bank's computers check every card payment day and night; a university server can send 20,000 result messages in one night without a single one getting less care than the first.

Versatility and reliability

Versatility. A computer is a very flexible machine that can solve problems in many fields. One moment it may be working out tomorrow's weather forecast, and the next moment it is playing a card game with you. The machine stays the same; only the program changes.

Reliability. Modern electronic parts last a long time, and computers are designed so that maintenance is easy: a broken part can usually be found and replaced quickly. That is why banks, airports and hospitals can trust computers to run all day, every day.

The same laptop is used for a statistics assignment in the morning and a video call in the evening. Which strength does this show?

Automation and less paper

Automation. A computer is an automatic machine. Once a program is stored in its memory, the program's instructions control the work without anyone pressing buttons. Your phone's alarm rings on time, the backup runs at 2 a.m., and the bank pays salaries on the same day every month — all without a person watching.

Less paper and lower cost. Using computers for data processing cuts paperwork and speeds up the work. Electronic files can be found again in seconds, so offices no longer need rooms full of folders. Buying and installing computers costs a lot at the start, but afterwards the cost of each transaction — each registration, payment or record — falls a great deal.

An example with made-up but realistic numbers: a college pays 40,000,000 dinars for a registration system that handles 200,000 registrations in five years. Each registration costs 40 000 000÷200 000=20040\,000\,000 \div 200\,000 = 200 dinars of the system's price — much less than the paper, printing and staff time of a paper form.

Why can a computer system be cheaper in the long run even though it costs a lot to buy?

Where computers fall short

The course lists four disadvantages, and the Kurdish report adds one more. They are all one idea seen from different sides: a computer is a powerful tool, but only a tool.

What about artificial intelligence?

The slides, written in 2021, say a computer “cannot take any decision on its own”. In 2026 you use programs that seem to decide: a map app chooses your route, a bank flags a strange card payment, a chatbot writes an answer. These are artificial intelligence (AI) programs. Many of them use machine learning: they find patterns in large amounts of data and use the patterns to predict or choose.

So the old sentence needs care, but its main point still holds. AI programs are still programs that people design; they learn only from data that people collect, so garbage in, garbage out applies to them too; they can be confidently wrong; and they do not understand or feel the way people do. For important decisions — health, money, justice — a person must stay responsible.

Other costs of using computers

Beyond the limits above, using computers has costs for people and society. Another course on the same subject lists five: health, the environment, privacy, public safety and jobs. Every IT person should know them:

  • Health: long hours at a screen can hurt the eyes, the neck, the back and the wrists. Good posture, breaks and a well-placed screen help — see Healthy screen habits.
  • Well-being: rest your eyes now and then by looking at something far away. Look after your digital well-being too: set limits on screen time, keep the phone away from your bed so that you sleep well, and keep time for sport and for friends in real life.
  • Energy and waste: computers and data centres use a lot of electricity, and old devices become electronic waste that must be recycled safely.

Some costs reach beyond the person at the screen and affect the whole of society:

  • Security and privacy: connected computers can be attacked, and personal data can be stolen or misused. The Cybersecurity course teaches how to defend them.
  • Public safety: traffic lights, hospital machines, power stations and air traffic control all depend on computers. If such a computer fails or is attacked, people can be hurt, so these systems need backups, careful testing and strong security.
  • Jobs: automation and AI change work. Some jobs shrink or disappear, such as typing data in by hand, and new ones appear, such as cloud engineer and data analyst (IT jobs today). The World Economic Forum expects about 170 million jobs to be created and 92 million to disappear worldwide between 2025 and 2030, so people need to keep learning.

  • Eight strengths: speed, accuracy, storage, diligence, versatility, reliability, automation, and less paper and cost.
  • Speed is measured in ms, µs, ns and ps; today's processors do billions of simple operations a second.
  • Accuracy depends on the input and the program: garbage in, garbage out. Fractions are stored with limited precision.
  • Limits: no intelligence of its own, dependency on people, the need for a suitable environment and electricity, and no feelings.
  • AI programs seem to decide, but they follow programs and data made by people and need human judgement for important decisions.
  • Computers are used in business, banking, insurance, education, marketing, health care, engineering, the military, communication and government.

What is the difference between diligence and automation?

Diligence: the computer can repeat work for a long time without getting tired or careless. Automation: once a program is stored, it runs the work without a person.

Why is a computer said to have “no IQ”?

Because it has no intelligence of its own: every instruction must come from a program written by people, and it cannot judge by feeling or experience.
