The Animation Pane and Timingپانێڵی ئەنیمەیشن و کاتبەندی

In the previous lesson you learned to give an object an entrance, emphasis, exit or motion path effect. One effect is easy to follow. But a real slide often has five or eight effects: a title flies in, a picture fades in, and three bullet points appear one by one. Then two questions matter: in what order do the effects play, and when does each one start?

This lesson gives you a tool for each question. The Animation Pane shows every effect on the slide as a list, in the order it plays. The timing settings say when each effect starts, how long it lasts and how long it waits first.

The Animation Pane lets you see and manage all the effects on the current slide. Right there you can change an effect and move it up or down the list. This is most useful when a slide has several effects.

Each row of the pane is one effect. The rows are in the order the effects play. Compare the slide and the pane in the drawing:

Effects play in the order you add them. If you added the picture's effect before the title's, the picture comes first. You do not need to start again: change the order in the pane.

Without dragging: select the effect, then on the Animations tab, in the Timing group, click Move Earlier or Move Later. Each click moves it one place. To check the result, click Play From at the top of the pane: PowerPoint plays the slide from the selected effect. To delete an effect, select it in the pane and press Delete.

For every transition and every animation you decide two things: when it starts and its timing, that is, how long it lasts and how long it waits. The event that makes a transition or an animation begin is called its trigger.

For an animation you choose the start in the Start box (Animations tab › Timing group). It has three options:

A new animation starts On Click. That is the default: the effect waits until the presenter gives the signal to go on, with a click or a key.

Follow the drawing from left to right. You click once. The title and the picture start together (On Click and With Previous). When the picture has finished, the caption waits half a second and then starts (After Previous with a delay). The bullet points wait for your next click.

Duration is how many seconds an effect takes from start to end. A bigger number makes the effect slower; a smaller number makes it faster.

ماوە (Duration) ئەو چەند چرکەیەیە کە کاریگەرییەک لە سەرەتاوە تا کۆتایی دەیخایەنێت. ژمارەی گەورەتر کاریگەرییەکە هێواشتر دەکات و ژمارەی بچووکتر خێراتر.

Delay is how many seconds the effect waits before it starts. The waiting begins at the moment set by Start. For example, an effect set to After Previous with a delay of 1.5 seconds starts 1.5 seconds after the previous effect ends.

You always type times in seconds. The boxes then show them in one of two ways:

Each effect has a dialog box with more settings. To open it, click the small arrow in the lower-right corner of the Animation group (Microsoft calls it Show Additional Effect Options), or click the arrow beside the effect in the Animation Pane and choose Timing…. On its Timing tab you find Start, Delay and Duration again, and two more settings:

In PowerPoint, Trigger is also the name of a button in the Advanced Animation group. It gives an animation a special start: not the next click anywhere, but a click on one chosen object, or a chosen moment in a video or sound on the slide.

On Bookmark works with a video or a sound on the slide. First add a bookmark, a marked moment, in the clip. Then choose Trigger › On Bookmark and pick it. The animation plays when the clip reaches that moment.

The timing of transitions and animations helps to set the tone of a presentation. This matters most when the show runs by itself, for example on a screen at a school open day, where every slide moves on After a few seconds and nobody clicks.
