New information changes probabilities

A friend rolls a die behind a book. The chance that it shows 6 is 16\tfrac16. Now your friend says: "It is even." The roll is one of 2, 4, 6, and they are still equally likely, so the chance of a 6 is now 13\tfrac13. The information threw away the impossible outcomes and shrank the sample space.

The probability of AA when we already know that BB happened: P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}, with P(B)>0P(B) > 0.

P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}، بە مەرجی P(B)>0P(B) > 0.

Written P(A∣B)P(A \mid B) and read "the probability of A given B". The vertical bar means "given that".

بە P(A∣B)P(A \mid B) دەنووسرێت و دەخوێنرێتەوە « A بە مەرجی B».

P(6∣E)=13≠P(6)=16P(6 \mid E) = \frac{1}{3} \ne P(6) = \frac16

Write E for "even". Order matters inside the bar: P(E∣6)=1P(E \mid 6) = 1, because a 6 is always even.

The taxi driver's guess

A taxi driver at the Erbil bus station guesses where a passenger is going. Before the passenger speaks, every district is possible. As soon as the passenger says "near the citadel", most districts drop out and the driver's guesses about the remaining ones get sharper. Conditional probability does the same: the condition removes outcomes, and the chances are re-shared among the ones that are left.

Inside the 10, only (6, 3) has b = 3 and turns orange. Last frame: P(b = 3 | a + b > 8) = (1/36) ÷ (10/36) = 1/10, which is not 1/6, so the information changed the probability and the events are dependent.

P(M∪S)=0.25+0.15−0.10=0.30P(M \cup S) = 0.25 + 0.15 - 0.10 = 0.30.

Parts 1 and 2 use the same overlap but divide by different events, so P(M∣S)=23P(M \mid S) = \tfrac23 is not P(S∣M)=25P(S \mid M) = \tfrac25. Never swap the two sides of the bar.

The person chosen is colour-blind. What is the probability that the person is male? That the person is female? The condition CB keeps only the colour-blind column, whose total is 0.030:

The two answers add up to 1: given CB, the person is either male or female.

Reading the table the other way answers a different question: among males, P(CB∣M)=0.0250.5=0.05P(CB \mid M) = \tfrac{0.025}{0.5} = 0.05; among females, P(CB∣F)=0.0050.5=0.01P(CB \mid F) = \tfrac{0.005}{0.5} = 0.01. Turning one direction into the other is the job of Bayes' theorem.

The general multiplication rule

Multiply both sides of the conditional probability formula by the denominator and you get a rule for "A and B". The notes use it for the box homework without stating it, so here it is:

P(A∩B)=P(A)⋅P(B∣A)=P(B)⋅P(A∣B)P(A \cap B) = P(A) \cdot P(B \mid A) = P(B) \cdot P(A \mid B)

In words: the chance of A first, times the chance of B once A has happened. For three events: P(A∩B∩C)=P(A) P(B∣A) P(C∣A∩B)P(A \cap B \cap C) = P(A)\,P(B \mid A)\,P(C \mid A \cap B).

بۆ سێ : P(A∩B∩C)=P(A) P(B∣A) P(C∣A∩B)P(A \cap B \cap C) = P(A)\,P(B \mid A)\,P(C \mid A \cap B).

Example. A box holds 4 red and 6 blue balls. Take two without putting the first back. With R1R_1 and R2R_2 for red on the first and second draw, P(R1∩R2)=410×39=1290=215P(R_1 \cap R_2) = \tfrac{4}{10} \times \tfrac{3}{9} = \tfrac{12}{90} = \tfrac{2}{15}: after one red ball, only 3 of the 9 remaining balls are red.

Independent events

Two events are independent when knowing that one happened does not change the probability of the other. Tossing a coin twice: "heads on the first toss" tells you nothing about the second toss. Any one of these three tests shows independence (they are equivalent):

P(A∣B)=P(A)P(B∣A)=P(B)P(A∩B)=P(A)⋅P(B)P(A \mid B) = P(A) \qquad P(B \mid A) = P(B) \qquad P(A \cap B) = P(A) \cdot P(B)

Put P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B) into the conditional formula: P(A∣B)=P(A)P(B)P(B)=P(A)P(A \mid B) = \tfrac{P(A)P(B)}{P(B)} = P(A). Events that are not independent are dependent.

P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B) لە دابنێ: P(A∣B)=P(A)P(B)P(B)=P(A)P(A \mid B) = \tfrac{P(A)P(B)}{P(B)} = P(A).

The third test is the multiplication theorem for independent events. Example (17): two independent tosses of a fair coin, P(H1∩H2)=12×12=14P(H_1 \cap H_2) = \tfrac12 \times \tfrac12 = \tfrac14, where H1H_1 and H2H_2 are heads on the first and second toss. Rolling a die twice, the chance of two sixes is 16×16=136\tfrac16 \times \tfrac16 = \tfrac{1}{36}.

P(a+b>9∣b=4)=P({a+b>9}∩{b=4})P(b=4)=1/366/36=16≈0.1667P(a + b > 9 \mid b = 4) = \frac{P(\{a + b > 9\} \cap \{b = 4\})}{P(b = 4)} = \frac{1/36}{6/36} = \frac16 \approx 0.1667

Only (6, 4) has b=4b = 4 and a sum above 9. The six outcomes with a sum above 9 are (4,6), (5,5), (5,6), (6,4), (6,5), (6,6), so P(a+b>9)=636=16P(a + b > 9) = \tfrac{6}{36} = \tfrac16 too.

P(a+b>9)=636=16P(a + b > 9) = \tfrac{6}{36} = \tfrac16ـیش.

The condition did not change the probability: P(a+b>9∣b=4)=P(a+b>9)=16P(a + b > 9 \mid b = 4) = P(a + b > 9) = \tfrac16. So these two events happen to be independent, and indeed the chance of both is 136=16×16\tfrac{1}{36} = \tfrac16 \times \tfrac16. Compare Example (22), where the condition changed 16\tfrac16 into 110\tfrac{1}{10}: dependent.

P(a+b>9∣b=4)=P(a+b>9)=16P(a + b > 9 \mid b = 4) = P(a + b > 9) = \tfrac16.

Mutually exclusive and independent sound alike but are almost opposites. Take one roll: E = even, O = odd. They are mutually exclusive, so P(E∩O)=0P(E \cap O) = 0. But P(E)⋅P(O)=12⋅12=14≠0P(E) \cdot P(O) = \tfrac12 \cdot \tfrac12 = \tfrac14 \ne 0, so they are not independent. Knowing that E happened tells you for sure that O did not: that is the strongest dependence there is.

The total: 3 × 216/1320 = 648/1320 = 108/220 ≈ 0.4909; one order alone (0.1636) is only a third of the answer.

Let X be the number of defective items drawn. Combinations count the three orders automatically. This problem is H.W (10) of the expected-value lecture; its Kurdish answer in the course notes multiplies along one order only. The whole homework, with the expected number of defective items (0.75), is in Expected Value.

ExerciseڕاهێنانWith and without replacementلەگەڵ گەڕاندنەوە و بەبێ گەڕاندنەوە

A box has 4 red and 6 blue balls. Two balls are drawn. Find the probability that both are red (a) without replacement, (b) with replacement. Which is larger, and why?

Show answer
a) 410⋅39=215≈0.133b) 410⋅410=425=0.16\text{a) } \tfrac{4}{10} \cdot \tfrac{3}{9} = \tfrac{2}{15} \approx 0.133 \qquad \text{b) } \tfrac{4}{10} \cdot \tfrac{4}{10} = \tfrac{4}{25} = 0.16

With replacement is larger: the red ball goes back, so the second draw still has 4 red balls out of 10.

Summary

  • P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}: the condition B becomes the new, smaller sample space (Example 22: 110\tfrac{1}{10}).
  • General multiplication rule P(A∩B)=P(A) P(B∣A)P(A \cap B) = P(A)\,P(B \mid A); for draws without replacement update the box after each draw (0.0371).
  • Independent: P(A∣B)=P(A)P(A \mid B) = P(A), equivalently P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B); a coin has no memory.
  • Disjoint events (with positive probabilities) are dependent, never independent.
  • Tree diagrams: multiply along a path, add the paths; count every order.
  • P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}:
P(A∩B)=P(A) P(B∣A)P(A \cap B) = P(A)\,P(B \mid A)؛ بۆ دەرهێنان دوای هەر دەرهێنانێک سندووقەکە نوێ بکەرەوە ⁦(0.0371)⁩.
P(A∣B)=P(A)P(A \mid B) = P(A)، یان بە هەمان واتا P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B)؛ دراو بیرەوەریی نییە.

Why is P(b=3∣a+b>8)P(b = 3 \mid a + b > 8) different from P(a+b>8∣b=3)P(a + b > 8 \mid b = 3)? P(b=3∣a+b>8)P(b = 3 \mid a + b > 8) جیاوازە لە P(a+b>8∣b=3)P(a + b > 8 \mid b = 3)؟

The first divides by 1036\tfrac{10}{36} (sum above 8) and gives 110\tfrac{1}{10}; the second divides by 636\tfrac{6}{36} (b=3b = 3) and gives 16\tfrac16.
