Rezan wants to build a bus-timetable app for his city. Some riders use Android phones, some use iPhones, and the bus company also wants a web page and a program for the ticket office PC. Writing four separate apps would take four times the work. This is the problem Flutter was made to solve.

Flutter is made by Google together with a large open-source community of companies and individual developers. Its source code is public on GitHub under the BSD 3-Clause licence, so anyone may read it, use it for free (also in paid apps) and suggest changes.

The lecture says Flutter was "released in May 2017" and that the "latest version is 3.24, released on 6 August 2024". May 2017 was the first alpha; the first stable version, 1.0, came in December 2018. Version numbers move fast: a new stable release appears every few months, and in October 2026 the latest is 3.47 (12 August 2026). Do not learn a version number by heart. Check the official release notes page, or run flutter --version on your computer.

Because Flutter draws its own widgets instead of using each platform's buttons, a Flutter app looks the same on Android and iOS unless you choose otherwise (for example with Cupertino widgets on iPhone). That is a strength for brand design, and something to plan for when users expect the platform's own look.

In many technologies, every small change means: stop the app, compile everything again, start the app, and tap your way back to the screen you were testing. Flutter's hot reload removes most of that waiting. You save the file, and the running app shows the change, usually in less than a second.

The modern name is stateful hot reload: the new code is loaded into the running app, the widgets are rebuilt, and the app's state is kept. In the animation, the counter still says 3 after the colour changes. You do not have to tap + three times again to get back to where you were.

A hot restart also loads your new code, but it starts the app again from main(), so the state is lost: the counter goes back to 0, as the last frame of the animation shows. The lecture says Flutter apps are compiled to native machine code, which makes them fast and efficient. That is true for the app you give to users. Flutter uses two ways of compiling, one for each stage of work (Three ways to compile Dart explains them in detail):

Two more things make Flutter fast. It draws its own widgets with its own renderer (Impeller on mobile and desktop), which ships inside every app (see How Flutter Is Built). And on the web, Flutter compiles Dart to JavaScript or WebAssembly instead of machine code.

Why Dart?بۆچی Dart؟

Flutter apps are written in Dart, a programming language that Google also developed. Dart was unveiled in October 2011, at the GOTO conference in Aarhus, Denmark. The Flutter team compared several languages and chose Dart for reasons that fit a UI framework well:

Two ways to compile: JIT for hot reload while developing, AOT machine code for fast release apps, and JavaScript or WebAssembly for the web.

Predictable speed: machine code with no interpreter or bridge in the way, so frames are drawn on time.
Fast memory handling: Flutter creates many small, short-lived widget objects, and Dart's automatic memory clean-up (garbage collection) is built for exactly that.
Safety: Dart is statically typed with type inference and sound null safety, so many mistakes are caught before the app runs.
