Minors and cofactors

Bigger determinants are built from smaller ones. Two words are needed:

  • The MijM_{ij} of the entry aija_{ij} is the determinant that is left after deleting row ii and column jj.
  • The of aija_{ij} is the minor with a sign: Cij=(−1)i+jMijC_{ij} = (-1)^{i+j}M_{ij}. (The notes write it AijA_{ij}; many books use CijC_{ij}, which is easier to tell apart from the entry aija_{ij}.)
Cij=(−1)i+jMijC_{ij} = (-1)^{i+j}M_{ij}.

The sign (−1)i+j(-1)^{i+j} is ++ when i+ji + j is even and −- when it is odd. Laid out over the matrix it makes a chessboard that starts with ++ in the top-left corner:

هێمای (−1)i+j(-1)^{i+j} ++ـە کاتێک i+ji + j جووت بێت و −-ـە کاتێک تاک بێت.

The notes' first example: a 2×22 \times 2×22 \times 2

The notes' first example, A=[104−1]A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 4 & -1 \end{bmatrix}: deleting a row and a column of a 2×22 \times 2 matrix leaves a single number.

A=[104−1]A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 4 & -1 \end{bmatrix}:

[M11M12M21M22]=[−1401],[C11C12C21C22]=[−1−401]\begin{bmatrix} M_{11} & M_{12} \\ M_{21} & M_{22} \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -1 & 4 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix}, \qquad \begin{bmatrix} C_{11} & C_{12} \\ C_{21} & C_{22} \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -1 & -4 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix}

The minors are on the left, the cofactors on the right. For example, M12M_{12}: delete row 1 and column 2, which leaves 4; its sign is (−1)1+2=−1(-1)^{1+2} = -1, so C12=−4C_{12} = -4.

∣A∣=a11C11+a12C12=1(−1)+0(−4)=−1|A| = a_{11}C_{11} + a_{12}C_{12} = 1(-1) + 0(-4) = -1

Row 1 times its cofactors gives the determinant — the same −1-1 as ad−bc=(1)(−1)−(0)(4)ad - bc = (1)(-1) - (0)(4). The next screen explains why this works.

Expanding a 3×33 \times 3 determinantکردنەوەی دیتەرمینانتێکی 3×33 \times 3

The value of a determinant is the sum of the entries of one row, each multiplied by its own cofactor. Along the first row of a 3×33 \times 3 matrix:

3×33 \times 3:

This is called cofactor expansion (or Laplace expansion). Each 3×33 \times 3 determinant turns into three 2×22 \times 2 ones.

2×22 \times 2.

The notes' example: B=[3121004635]B = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 1 & 2 \\ 10 & 0 & 4 \\ 6 & 3 & 5 \end{bmatrix}. All nine minors and cofactors:

نموونەی تێبینییەکان: B=[3121004635]B = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 1 & 2 \\ 10 & 0 & 4 \\ 6 & 3 & 5 \end{bmatrix}.

M=[−122630−1334−8−10],C=[−12−263013−348−10]M = \begin{bmatrix} -12 & 26 & 30 \\ -1 & 3 & 3 \\ 4 & -8 & -10 \end{bmatrix}, \qquad C = \begin{bmatrix} -12 & -26 & 30 \\ 1 & 3 & -3 \\ 4 & 8 & -10 \end{bmatrix}

For example M11=∣0435∣=0−12=−12M_{11} = \begin{vmatrix} 0 & 4 \\ 3 & 5 \end{vmatrix} = 0 - 12 = -12 and M12=∣10465∣=50−24=26M_{12} = \begin{vmatrix} 10 & 4 \\ 6 & 5 \end{vmatrix} = 50 - 24 = 26, so C12=−26C_{12} = -26. The cofactors are the minors with the chessboard signs.

∣B∣=3(−12)+1(−26)+2(30)=−36−26+60=−2|B| = 3(-12) + 1(-26) + 2(30) = -36 - 26 + 60 = -2

Third entry 0: the minor 3, 0 / 1, −1 is −3, the sign is plus, but 0 times anything is 0, so the total stays −20. Last frame: det A = 2 − 22 + 0 = −20.

Any row or column gives the same answer

You may expand along any row or any column — the answer is always the same. Here is ∣B∣|B| from the previous screen, expanded six ways with its cofactors CC:

So choose the row or column with the most zeros: every 0 entry kills its whole term, so you need fewer minors. Column 2 of BB has a 0, and its expansion needs only two 2×22 \times 2 determinants. (The sign pattern still comes from the chessboard: column 2 starts with −-.)

Summary

  • Only square matrices have a determinant, written det⁡A\det A or ∣A∣|A|; det⁡A≠0\det A \ne 0 exactly when AA has an inverse.
  • ∣[a]∣=a|[a]| = a (so ∣[−2]∣=−2|[-2]| = -2: not an absolute value); ∣abcd∣=ad−bc\begin{vmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{vmatrix} = ad - bc.
  • A 2×22 \times 2 matrix multiplies areas by ∣det⁡∣|\det|; a negative determinant also flips, 0 flattens.
  • Minor MijM_{ij}: delete row ii and column jj. Cofactor Cij=(−1)i+jMijC_{ij} = (-1)^{i+j}M_{ij} (chessboard signs).
  • Expand along any row or column — same answer; pick the one with the most zeros (the notes' 4×44 \times 4: 732).
  • Sarrus' diagonals work for 3×33 \times 3 only.
  • تەنها هەیە کە بە det⁡A\det A یان ∣A∣|A| دەنووسرێت؛ det⁡A≠0\det A \ne 0 ڕێک کاتێک کە AA پێچەوانەی هەبێت.
