Language, comments and working togetherزمان، سەرنجەکان و پێکەوە کارکردن

In the last lesson you checked spelling and accessibility. This lesson finishes the Review tab. It is about words and people: which language your text is in, and how you talk with other people about your slides.

  • Language group: Translate and Language.
  • Comments group: New Comment, Delete, Previous, Next and Show Comments.
  • The Share button in the top-right corner of the window, for working on one file together.

Translate: put words into another languageTranslate: وشەکان بکە بە زمانێکی تر

Translate changes the words you select into another language. This helps when one presentation must work for people who speak different languages.

Definitionپێناسە

Translation done by software instead of a person, such as the Translate command on the Review tab or Google Translate. It is quick but can make mistakes, so a person should check important text.

  1. Select the text you want to translate.

Every piece of text in PowerPoint carries a hidden language mark. This is its proofing language. The spelling check is one of PowerPoint's best proofing tools. It works automatically while you type, and Review > Spelling checks the whole presentation. But it can only use the dictionary of the language that the text is marked with.

So set the proofing language first. It lives in the Language group of the Review tab: select Language, then Set Proofing Language….

  1. Select the text. Click inside a text box and press Ctrl+A to select all of its text.

  2. On the Review tab, select Language > Set Proofing Language…. The Language dialog box opens.

The Language dialog box (PowerPoint 2019). 'Mark selected text as' means the choice is for the selected text. The Language dialog boxپەنجەرەی گفتوگۆی Language

Kurdish, Arabic and English in one fileکوردی، عەرەبی و ئینگلیزی لە یەک فایلدا

Kurdish, Arabic and English can all live in one presentation. Each piece of text keeps its own language mark, so one slide can have an English title and a Kurdish sentence under it.

کوردی، عەرەبی و ئینگلیزی دەتوانن هەموویان لە یەک بن. هەر پارچە دەقێک نیشانەی زمانی خۆی دەهێڵێتەوە، بۆیە یەک دەتوانێت ناونیشانێکی ئینگلیزی و ڕستەیەکی کوردیی لە ژێردا هەبێت.

Central Kurdish (Iraq) is in the language list, as you saw in the picture, so you can mark text as Kurdish. But Microsoft has no Kurdish proofing tools (Kurdish is not in its Language Accessory Pack list), so PowerPoint cannot check Kurdish spelling: read Kurdish slides yourself. And if Kurdish text is marked as English, PowerPoint checks it with the English dictionary and puts a red line under almost every word.

Stop the false red lines under Kurdish textهێڵە سوورە بێهۆکان لە ژێر دەقی کوردی لاببە

  1. Select the Kurdish text.

  2. Review > Language > Set Proofing Language….

  3. Choose Central Kurdish (Iraq) and tick Do not check spelling or grammar.

  4. Select OK. The red lines disappear. Check your Kurdish yourself, or ask a friend to read it.

Comments: notes for you and your teamسەرنجەکان: تێبینی بۆ خۆت و هاوکارەکانت

A comment is like a sticky note on a slide. You attach it to the slide, or to one object on it, to ask a question or suggest a change. Comments are for the people who build the presentation, not for the audience: they are not part of the slide and do not appear in the slide show.

Add a commentسەرنجێک زیاد بکە

  1. Select the object or text you want to comment on. Select nothing to comment on the whole slide.

  2. On the Review tab, select New Comment. (Also: Insert > Comment, right-click > New Comment, or Ctrl+Alt+M.)

  3. The Comments pane opens on the right. Type your comment.

Reply, resolve, show and deleteوەڵامدانەوە، چارەسەرکردن، پیشاندان و سڕینەوە

A comment and its replies form a thread — a small conversation about one thing. With comments, two people can discuss a change without changing each other's text.

  • Reply: select the comment in the Comments pane, type in the Reply box and select Post.
  • @mention: type @ and a person's name. They get an email with a link to the comment. (This works with work or school accounts.)
  • Resolve thread: when the question is answered, select … (More thread actions) > Resolve thread. The marker leaves the slide, but the thread stays in the pane.
  • Delete one thread: select … > Delete thread.
  • Delete many at once: on the Review tab, open Delete and choose Delete All Comments on Slide or Delete All Comments in Presentation.
  • Show Comments: on the Review tab, Show Comments shows or hides the comment markers and the Comments pane (in Normal view).

Comments are most useful when several people work on the same file. Today PowerPoint lets them do it at the same time. This is called co-authoring.

Definitionپێناسە

Two or more people editing the same at the same time. The file is kept in (OneDrive or SharePoint), each person sees who else is working on it, and their changes are joined into one copy.

  1. Save the file to OneDrive or SharePoint (File > Save As > OneDrive). Co-authoring works only with files in the cloud.

  2. Select Share in the top-right corner of the window.

While you work, the pictures or initials of the other people appear in the top-right corner. A small icon on a slide thumbnail shows who is working on that slide. Your changes and theirs are joined when the file saves. If two people changed the same thing, PowerPoint shows both versions and you choose which one to keep.

Open any presentation you made. Add a comment to the title of slide 1: 'Is this title clear?'. Then reply to your own comment, and finally resolve the thread.

Use the Review tab tools on one presentation: check the spelling, find a synonym with the Thesaurus, run Check Accessibility, translate one sentence and undo it, and mark one Kurdish sentence so it gets no red lines.

Work with a classmate. Save a presentation to OneDrive and share it with them with Can edit. At the same time, you change slide 1 and they change slide 2. Then open Version History and look at an older version.

Summary and reviewپوختە و پێداچوونەوە

  • Review > Translate replaces selected text with a machine translation. Check it with a person.
  • Every piece of text has a proofing language. With the wrong one, correct words get red lines.
  • Language dialog: OK marks the selected text; Default… changes PowerPoint's default language for the future, not the text already in the file.
  • Kurdish has no Microsoft dictionary: mark it Central Kurdish (Iraq), tick Do not check spelling or grammar and proofread it yourself.
  • Comments live in the Comments pane: Post, reply, @mention, Resolve thread, Delete thread. The audience never sees them.
  • Co-authoring: save to OneDrive or SharePoint, Share, choose Can edit or Can view. Version History brings an older version back.
  • Compare is gone from PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows (version 2502 and later).
