Absolute Value Inequalities with Fractions

The course's hardest examples, ∣x−1x+1∣≤3\left|\frac{x-1}{x+1}\right| \le 3, ∣3x+1∣<2∣x−6∣|3x + 1| < 2|x - 6| and ∣2x−4∣<3\left|\frac2x - 4\right| < 3: why you multiply by the square of the denominator, two sign charts and their intersection, a shortcut by squaring both sides, the corrected answer (−∞,−2]∪[−12,∞)(-\infty, -2] \cup [-\tfrac12, \infty), and two homework attempts to repair.

What you will learn

  • Find the forbidden values of an absolute-value inequality with fractions, including hidden ones.
  • Explain why you multiply by the square of the denominator and not by the denominator.
  • Solve the two resulting inequalities with sign charts and combine them with an intersection.
  • Use squaring of both sides as a shortcut when both sides are non-negative.
  • Find and repair common mistakes in written solutions.

When the unknown sits in a fraction

Three examples are left on the course's list: Example 4 ∣x−1x+1∣≤3\left|\frac{x-1}{x+1}\right| \le 3, Example 5 ∣3x+1∣<2∣x−6∣|3x+1| < 2|x-6| and Example 7 ∣2x−4∣<3\left|\frac2x - 4\right| < 3. In each one xx sits in a , or on both sides. That brings two new dangers:

سێ نموونە لە لیستەکەی وانەکەدا ماونەتەوە: نموونەی 4 ∣x−1x+1∣≤3\left|\frac{x-1}{x+1}\right| \le 3، نموونەی 5 ∣3x+1∣<2∣x−6∣|3x+1| < 2|x-6| و نموونەی 7 ∣2x−4∣<3\left|\frac2x - 4\right| < 3.

  • Forbidden values. A value that makes a denominator 0 can never be in the answer: x≠−1x \ne -1 in Example 4 (the slide says so), x≠0x \ne 0 in Example 7 (hidden — the slide does not say it).
  • Unknown signs. You may not multiply an inequality by x+1x + 1 or xx: you do not know whether it is positive or negative, and only multiplying by a negative number reverses the sign. This is the rule you met in Inequalities with fractions.
The lecturer's method in five steps
  1. Remove the bars with the theorem: ∣F∣≤r  ⟺  −r≤F≤r|F| \le r \iff -r \le F \le r (or the << form).

    هێڵەکان بە لابەرە: ∣F∣≤r  ⟺  −r≤F≤r|F| \le r \iff -r \le F \le r (یان شێوەی <<).

  2. Split the double inequality into two inequalities joined by and.

  3. In each one, multiply by the square of the denominator (it is positive), move everything to one side and factor.

  4. Solve each one with a sign chart (see the sign-chart method).

  5. Keep only the numbers that pass both (the intersection) and remove the forbidden values.

Why does the lecturer multiply by (x+1)2(x+1)^2 and not by x+1x+1?

Reminder: multiply by the square of the denominator

You met this danger in Inequalities with fractions: x+1x + 1 is negative for x<−1x < -1 and positive for x>−1x > -1, so one multiplication rule cannot be right for every xx. Done carelessly in Example 4, it would give x≥−2x \ge -2, which wrongly keeps x=−1.5x = -1.5 and loses x=−3x = -3. The square (x+1)2(x+1)^2 is positive for every allowed xx (x≠−1x \ne -1), so the sign never has to flip — this is method B again. Multiplying by ∣x+1∣|x+1| is safe for the same reason; the shortcut screens below use it.

(3x+1)2<4(x−6)29x2+6x+1<4x2−48x+1445x2+54x−143<0(5x−11)(x+13)<0  ⟺  −13<x<115\begin{aligned} (3x+1)^2 &< 4(x-6)^2 \\ 9x^2 + 6x + 1 &< 4x^2 - 48x + 144 \\ 5x^2 + 54x - 143 &< 0 \\ (5x - 11)(x + 13) &< 0 \iff -13 < x < \tfrac{11}{5} \end{aligned}

One quadratic inequality instead of two charts (see Quadratic inequalities). Notice too that x≠6x \ne 6 is not needed for the original inequality: at x=6x = 6 it reads 19<019 < 0, which is false anyway. The condition only protects the division step of the first method.

Here is a student's homework attempt at Example 5, typed out. Find three mistakes. Then say what the student got right, and finish the solution.

The student's attempt. Beside 2=212 = \tfrac21 the student wrote in Kurdish: “every number has the denominator 1”.

Hint

Look at the sign between the two sides in each line, and at what happens to << when you multiply by −1-1.

Show answer
  • Mistake 1: << silently became ==. Solving equations gives only the boundary points, not the solution set.
  • Mistake 2: cross-multiplying by x−6x - 6. Its sign is unknown, so in an inequality this is not allowed.
  • Mistake 3: multiplying by −1-1 without reversing. −y<2-y < 2 means y>−2y > -2, not y<−2y < -2 (and not y=−2y = -2): multiplying by a negative number reverses the sign (order rules).

What was right. The margin note “every number has the denominator 1” (2=212 = \tfrac21) is true and useful. And the two boundary numbers, −13-13 and 115\tfrac{11}{5}, are exactly right — they are where ∣3x+1∣=2∣x−6∣|3x+1| = 2|x-6|.

Finish with test numbers. The boundary points cut the line into three regions. Test one number in each, in the original inequality:

x=−20:∣−59∣=59<2∣−26∣=52  ?✗x=0:∣1∣=1<2∣−6∣=12  ?✓x=3:∣10∣=10<2∣−3∣=6  ?✗\begin{aligned} x = -20:&\quad |-59| = 59 < 2|-26| = 52 \;? \quad \text{✗} \\ x = 0:&\quad |1| = 1 < 2|-6| = 12 \;? \quad \text{✓} \\ x = 3:&\quad |10| = 10 < 2|-3| = 6 \;? \quad \text{✗} \end{aligned}

So the solution set is (−13,115)\left(-13, \tfrac{11}{5}\right). “Boundary points from the equation, then test the regions” is a valid and fast method — it only needs the testing step.

کەواتە (−13,115)\left(-13, \tfrac{11}{5}\right)ـە.

Show answer

The impossible line is 2<x<272 < x < \tfrac27: it says xx is bigger than 2 and smaller than 27\tfrac27 at the same time — and 2<272 < \tfrac27 is itself false.

Taking of positive numbers reverses the order (rule 6 of the order rules): if 0<a<b0 < a < b then 1a>1b\tfrac1a > \tfrac1b. So the correct line is:

12<1x<72  ⟹  2>x>27,that is27<x<2\frac12 < \frac1x < \frac72 \;\Longrightarrow\; 2 > x > \frac27, \quad\text{that is}\quad \frac27 < x < 2

The flip is allowed here only because all three parts are positive: 1x>12>0\tfrac1x > \tfrac12 > 0 forces x>0x > 0. If the parts had different signs, it would fail. The lecturer avoids the problem altogether by multiplying by x2x^2. The student's margin note «ماویەتی؟» (“is something missing?”) was a good instinct: always check a line like 2<x<272 < x < \tfrac27 before moving on.

Summary

  • Write down the forbidden values first: every zero of a denominator, including hidden ones such as x≠0x \ne 0 in 2x\tfrac2x.
  • Remove the bars with the theorem, split into two inequalities joined by and, multiply each by the square of the denominator, factor, and solve each with a sign chart.
  • The answer is the intersection of the two charts, minus the forbidden values; test the edges in the original inequality.
  • Shortcut: when both sides are absolute values (or positive multiples of them), square both sides — one quadratic inequality instead of two charts.
  • Answers: Example 4 (−∞,−2]∪[−12,∞)(-\infty,-2] \cup [-\tfrac12,\infty); Example 5 (−13,115)(-13, \tfrac{11}{5}); Example 7 (27,2)(\tfrac27, 2).

Review questions
Why “and” and not “or” between the two inequalities?

Because they come from one double inequality −r≤F≤r-r \le F \le r: FF must be ≥−r\ge -r and at the same time ≤r\le r.

Why is x=−1x = -1 never in the answer of Example 4?

It makes the denominator x+1x + 1 equal to 0, so the fraction has no value there.

When may you square both sides of an inequality?

Only when both sides are ≥0\ge 0, for example when both are absolute values.
