"A or B" is a union«A یان B» یەکگرتنێکە

In probability, A or B means that A happens, or B happens, or both. As sets it is the union A∪BA \cup B: every outcome that is in A, in B, or in both, listed once. A and B is the intersection A∩BA \cap B: the outcomes in both. You met these in Union, Intersection, Difference and Complement and Or, and, not: combining events.

A و B A∩BA \cap B: ئەو لە هەردووکیاندان.

∪\cup is a cup∪\cup پەرداخێکە

The sign ∪\cup looks like a cup, and a cup holds more: "or" lets in outcomes from both events, so it is at least as big as each of them. The sign ∩\cap is the cup turned upside down: "and" keeps only what both events share, so it is never bigger than either. So P(A∩B)≤P(A)≤P(A∪B)P(A \cap B) \le P(A) \le P(A \cup B).

P(A∩B)≤P(A)≤P(A∪B)P(A \cap B) \le P(A) \le P(A \cup B).

Mutually exclusive (disjoint) events

Two events are mutually exclusive, or disjoint, if they cannot happen at the same time: when one happens, the other cannot. They share no outcome, A∩B=∅A \cap B = \varnothing. Rolling a die: "even" ({2,4,6}\{2, 4, 6\}) and "odd" ({1,3,5}\{1, 3, 5\}) are mutually exclusive, because no number is both.

A∩B=∅A \cap B = \varnothing.

Mutually exclusive events have two properties:

P(A∩B)=0P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A \cap B) = 0 \qquad\qquad P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B)

The first says they never happen together. The second is the additivity axiom: the probability that one of them happens is the sum. Example: rolling a 2 or a 5, P({2}∪{5})=16+16=26=13P(\{2\} \cup \{5\}) = \tfrac16 + \tfrac16 = \tfrac26 = \tfrac13.

Two panels for one roll of a die. Left, mutually exclusive: circle A = {1, 2} and circle B = {5, 6} do not touch; 3 and 4 lie outside; P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) = 2/6 + 2/6 = 4/6. Right, not mutually exclusive: A = even {2, 4, 6} and B = greater than 3 {4, 5, 6} overlap in 4 and 6; 1 and 3 lie outside; P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B) = 3/6 + 3/6 − 2/6 = 4/6. P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) = 2/6 + 2/6 = 4/6. P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B) = 3/6 + 3/6 − 2/6 = 4/6.
Separate circles: just add. Overlapping circles: add, then subtract the overlap.

When events overlap: subtract once

Roll a die. Let A be "even" ({2,4,6}\{2, 4, 6\}) and B "greater than 3" ({4,5,6}\{4, 5, 6\}). If you simply add, P(A)+P(B)=36+36=1P(A) + P(B) = \tfrac36 + \tfrac36 = 1, as if A or B were certain. But a roll of 1 or 3 is in neither event. The problem is that 4 and 6 belong to both events, so they were counted twice.

P(A)+P(B)=36+36=1P(A) + P(B) = \tfrac36 + \tfrac36 = 1، وەک ئەوەی A یان B دڵنیا بێت.

P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B)

This is the addition rule for any two events (theorem 6 in the notes). For the die: 36+36−26=46\tfrac36 + \tfrac36 - \tfrac26 = \tfrac46, and indeed "A or B", {2,4,5,6}\{2, 4, 5, 6\}, has 4 of the 6 faces. When A and B are mutually exclusive, P(A∩B)=0P(A \cap B) = 0 and the rule becomes simple addition.

Why the rule is true: the proof

The addition rule is proved from the axioms by cutting A∪BA \cup B into pieces that do not overlap.

  1. Cut the union

    A∪B=A∪(A′∩B)A \cup B = A \cup (A' \cap B): all of A, plus the part of B that is outside A. These two pieces do not overlap.

    A∪B=A∪(A′∩B)A \cup B = A \cup (A' \cap B): هەموو A، لەگەڵ ئەو بەشەی B کە لە دەرەوەی Aـیە.

  2. Use additivity

    P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(A′∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(A' \cap B).

    P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(A′∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(A' \cap B).

  3. Split B (theorem 7)B

    B is its part inside A plus its part outside A: P(B)=P(A∩B)+P(A′∩B)P(B) = P(A \cap B) + P(A' \cap B), so P(A′∩B)=P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A' \cap B) = P(B) - P(A \cap B).

A: P(B)=P(A∩B)+P(A′∩B)P(B) = P(A \cap B) + P(A' \cap B)، بۆیە P(A′∩B)=P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A' \cap B) = P(B) - P(A \cap B).

  4. Substitute

    P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B).

    P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B).

P(Aˉ)=1−P(A)P(\bar{A}) = 1 - P(A)

Plays 10:10-15:20 in Sorani: 60 students and three subjects in a Venn diagram; the chance that a student studies two subjects, all three, and so on.

Three events: inclusion–exclusion

For three events the same idea needs one more correction: adding the three probabilities counts every pairwise overlap twice, so subtract the pairs, but then the middle part (in all three) has been added three times and subtracted three times, so add it back once.

P(A1∪A2∪A3)=P(A1)+P(A2)+P(A3)−P(A1∩A2)−P(A2∩A3)−P(A3∩A1)+P(A1∩A2∩A3)P(A_1 \cup A_2 \cup A_3) = P(A_1) + P(A_2) + P(A_3) - P(A_1 \cap A_2) - P(A_2 \cap A_3) - P(A_3 \cap A_1) + P(A_1 \cap A_2 \cap A_3)

This is the inclusion–exclusion principle. It extends to nn events: add the singles, subtract the pairs, add the triples, subtract the quadruples, and so on.

Example. A number is chosen at random from 1 to 30. Let A = divisible by 2 (15 numbers), B = divisible by 3 (10), C = divisible by 5 (6). Pairs: by 6 (5 numbers), by 15 (2), by 10 (3); all three: by 30 (1).

P(A∪B∪C)=15+10+6−5−2−3+130=2230=1115P(A \cup B \cup C) = \frac{15 + 10 + 6 - 5 - 2 - 3 + 1}{30} = \frac{22}{30} = \frac{11}{15}

Checking every number from 1 to 30 one by one gives the same 22 numbers; the 8 left over are 1, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29.

Summary

  • "A or B" is the union A∪BA \cup B; "A and B" is the intersection A∩BA \cap B (∪\cup is a cup: it holds more).
  • Mutually exclusive (disjoint): P(A∩B)=0P(A \cap B) = 0 and P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B).
  • Any two events: P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B); the overlap is subtracted once.
  • Three events: add singles, subtract pairs, add the triple (inclusion–exclusion).
  • The rule also works backwards: P(A∩B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∪B)P(A \cap B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cup B) (16+21−30=716 + 21 - 30 = 7).
  • «A یان B» A∪BA \cup Bـە؛ «A و B» A∩BA \cap Bـە (∪\cup پەرداخە: زیاتر هەڵدەگرێت).
  • : P(A∩B)=0P(A \cap B) = 0 و P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B).
  • هەر دوو : P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B)؛ بەشە هاوبەشەکە یەک جار دەردەکرێت.
P(A∩B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∪B)P(A \cap B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cup B) (16+21−30=716 + 21 - 30 = 7).
