The numbers you use today did not appear all at once. Each new family was invented because the old one could not answer a question:

  • Debts and temperatures below zero need −1, −2, … and 0 → the integers ℤ.
  • Sharing one loaf of bread between 4 people needs 14\tfrac14 → the rational numbers ℚ.
  • The diagonal of a square with side 1 is 2\sqrt2, which is not a fraction → the irrational numbers. Rationals and irrationals together are the real numbers ℝ.

Natural numbers N\mathbb{N}ژمارە سروشتییەکان N\mathbb{N}

Definition

A counting number: 1, 2, 3, … The set of natural numbers is written N\mathbb{N}. Some books (and most programming) also count 0 as natural.

N={1,2,3,… }\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,3,\dots\}

The natural numbers (also called the positive integers) are the counting numbers. The set never ends: after every natural number comes another one.

Z={…,−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3,… }\mathbb{Z}=\{\dots,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,\dots\}

The integers are the whole numbers with their negatives and zero. The letter Z comes from the German word Zahlen, “numbers”.

The slide splits ℤ into three pieces with the union of the previous lesson:

Z=Z−∪{0}∪Z+\mathbb{Z}=\mathbb{Z}^{-}\cup\{0\}\cup\mathbb{Z}^{+}

The lift in a shopping centre

Think of the lift in a big shopping centre in Erbil. The buttons read −2, −1 for the car parks under the ground, 0 for the ground floor, and 1, 2, 3 for the shops above. Going down one floor always subtracts 1, whether you are at 3 or at −1. The integers are this list of floors, continued forever in both directions.

Rational numbers Q\mathbb{Q}ژمارە ڕێژەییەکان Q\mathbb{Q}

Definition

A number that can be written as a fraction pq\frac{p}{q} of two integers with q≠0q\ne 0. Its decimal form either ends or repeats. The set is Q\mathbb{Q}.

Q={pq ; p,q∈Z, q≠0}\mathbb{Q}=\left\{\frac{p}{q}\,;\,p,q\in\mathbb{Z},\ q\neq0\right\}

A rational number is a fraction of two integers. Q stands for “quotient”, the result of a division.

The course examples: 47\frac47, −35\frac{-3}{5}, 2−9\frac{2}{-9} and 06\frac06 are rational. A minus sign may sit on top or below: 2−9=−29\frac{2}{-9}=-\frac29. And 06=0\frac06=0, so 0 is rational too.

  • Why q≠0q\neq0? Division undoes multiplication: 63=2\frac63=2 because 2⋅3=62\cdot3=6. For 60\frac60 we would need a number that gives 6 when multiplied by 0, and no such number exists. So a denominator can never be 0.
  • Every integer is rational: n=n1n=\frac{n}{1}, for example −8=−81-8=\frac{-8}{1}. So Z⊂Q\mathbb{Z}\subset\mathbb{Q}.
Z⊂Q\mathbb{Z}\subset\mathbb{Q}.

Rational numbers as decimals

Divide the numerator by the denominator and a rational number becomes a decimal. Only two things can happen:

  • It terminates (stops): 25=0.4\frac25=0.4, 38=0.375\frac38=0.375.
  • It repeats forever: 73=2.333…=2.3‾\frac73=2.333\ldots=2.\overline{3}, 411=0.3636…=0.36‾\frac{4}{11}=0.3636\ldots=0.\overline{36}. The bar marks the block that repeats.

Why only these two? In long division by q, each remainder is one of 0,1,…,q−10,1,\dots,q-1. If a remainder is 0, the division stops. If not, after at most q steps a remainder must come back, and from then on the same digits come back in the same order. For 73\frac73 the remainder is always 1, so the digit 3 repeats.

It also works backwards: a terminating or repeating decimal is always rational. For example 0.4=410=250.4=\frac{4}{10}=\frac25 and 2.3‾=732.\overline{3}=\frac73.

The parts of a decimal number

A decimal number has a whole-number part and a fractional part, separated by the decimal point. In 24.36 the whole-number part is 24 and the fractional part is 0.36, which is 36100\frac{36}{100}.

Each place after the point is worth ten times less than the one before it: 0.36=310+61000.36=\frac{3}{10}+\frac{6}{100}. That is why a terminating decimal is always a fraction with 10, 100, 1000, … underneath. The same place-value idea is behind every number system (see Place value).

The imaginary unit iiیەکەی خەیاڵی ii

No real number squared gives −1, so x2=−1x^2=-1 has no real solution. Mathematicians add one new number, the imaginary unit i, with the rule:

i2=−1i^2=-1

Informally people write i=−1i=\sqrt{-1}, but the rule i2=−1i^2=-1 is the real definition.

Complex numbers C\mathbb{C}ژمارە ئاوێتەکان C\mathbb{C}

Definition

A number z=x+iyz=x+iy with a real part x and an imaginary part y, where ii is the (i2=−1i^2=-1). The set is C\mathbb{C}; every real number is complex with y=0y=0.

C={ z=x+iy ; x,y∈R }\mathbb{C}=\{\,z=x+iy\,;\,x,y\in\mathbb{R}\,\}

x is the real part of z and y is the imaginary part. The course example: −1+3−1=−1+3i-1+3\sqrt{-1}=-1+3i: real part −1, imaginary part 3.

Every real number is also complex, with imaginary part 0: 5=5+0i5=5+0i. So R⊂C\mathbb{R}\subset\mathbb{C}.

R⊂C\mathbb{R}\subset\mathbb{C}.

Between any two numbers

The slide's last note: between any two different real numbers there is always a rational number and an irrational number. You can even build them:

  1. A rational number in betweenژمارەیەکی ڕێژەیی لە نێوانیاندا

    Take the average of the two numbers. If a and b are rational, so is a+b2\frac{a+b}{2}.

ئەگەر a و b ، a+b2\frac{a+b}{2}ـیش .

    0.1<0.1+0.22=0.15<0.20.1<\frac{0.1+0.2}{2}=0.15<0.2
  2. An irrational number in betweenژمارەیەکی ناڕێژەیی لە نێوانیاندا

    If a and b are rational, move from a by a piece of the gap that is irrational, for example b−a2\frac{b-a}{\sqrt2}. This piece is smaller than the whole gap, and a rational number plus an irrational number is always irrational.

    ئەگەر a و b ، لە aـەوە بە پارچەیەک لە بۆشاییەکە بڕۆ کە ، بۆ نموونە b−a2\frac{b-a}{\sqrt2}.

    0.1<0.1+0.12=0.17071…<0.20.1<0.1+\frac{0.1}{\sqrt2}=0.17071\ldots<0.2

So there is no “next” real number after 1: whatever number you name, there are infinitely many numbers between 1 and it. The real numbers are packed densely along the line.

Review questions
Why can a denominator never be 0?

Because no number times 0 gives a non-zero result, so a division by 0 has no answer.

How can you tell from the decimals whether a number is rational?

Rational: the decimals end or repeat. Irrational: they never end and never repeat.

Why do we need complex numbers?

Because no real number squared gives a negative number, so equations like x2=−1x^2=-1 need the new number i.

Is 0 rational? Is it natural?

Rational, yes (0=010=\frac01). Natural: not in this course, which starts ℕ at 1.
