What is cloud storage?

Your phone is full, so you move your photos «to the cloud». Where do they go? Cloud storage is an internet service that keeps your files on a provider's servers. You save to it much as you save to your own disk, but you can reach the files at any time, from any place and any device — as long as you have the internet — and you can share them with the people you give permission to view or edit.

Sync: the same files on every device

Most cloud storage apps do more than upload: they sync. A sync app watches a folder on each of your devices. When a file changes on one device, the app uploads the change, and the other devices download it. The report's example: change a file linked to iCloud on your iPhone, and the same file changes on your Mac too — as long as both are signed in to iCloud.

Five advantages of cloud storage

When the phone breaks

The report calls protection one of the best points: when a phone breaks or is stolen, the photos and messages in the cloud are not lost. For example, Shilan pays a small monthly fee, and her iPhone backs up to iCloud every night, so a new phone gets everything back. Real document collaboration — editing one file together — is shown in Working together online.

Only what was uploaded is safe

The cloud protects only what was really uploaded. A photo that never synced — because the phone was offline or the storage was full — is lost with the phone. The report advises relying on cloud technology; the safe version of that advice is: use it, check that it is really syncing, and keep a separate backup too (see Sync is not a backup).

Weaknesses of cloud storage

The report and the presentation name three weaknesses:

Security. The data is never one hundred percent safe. Accounts can be broken into, and providers can make mistakes too.
Internet connection. You always need the internet to reach the files you uploaded. On a bus with no signal, a file that lives only in the cloud cannot be opened.
Performance. Uploads and downloads are only as fast as your connection — and most home connections upload much more slowly than they download.

Two more to knowدوو لاوازیی تر

Two more weaknesses are worth knowing. Privacy and law: your files may sit in another country, under its laws. Lock-in and lost accounts: moving years of photos to another service takes time, and if you lose access to the account (a forgotten password, a lost phone number), you can lose access to everything in it.

Keeping your cloud account safe

Most cloud files are not lost because a data centre is attacked. They are lost because someone gets into the account. Five habits protect it:

A long password used for this account only, kept in a password manager.
2-step verification turned on, so a stolen password alone is not enough.
No sign-in through links in messages: open the app or type the address yourself (phishing).
Check sharing: share with named people, not «anyone with the link», and remove old shares.
Sign out of shared computers in the lab or library.

Sync is not a backup

Sync keeps every copy the same. That is good when you edit a file, and bad when you make a mistake. Delete a file by accident, and sync deletes it on every device. If ransomware scrambles the files on your laptop, sync uploads the scrambled versions. Backup experts warn about exactly this: copies that follow the original also copy its damage.

Recycle bin, version history and a real backup

The recycle bin is a short safety net. Google Drive and OneDrive keep deleted files for 30 days; after that, or when the bin is emptied, they are gone.
Version history helps, but has limits. Many services keep older copies of a file for a while, and Microsoft 365 subscribers can roll their whole OneDrive back to a point in the last 30 days.
A real backup is separate. Keep at least one copy that sync cannot touch — on an external drive you disconnect, or in a backup service — and follow the 3-2-1 backup rule.

Backblaze was misspelt «BlackBlaze». The report's price «free ExpressVPN» was a promotion copied from a review site, not a plan; the presentation's $7 a month or $130 for two years is the real 2021 price. Backblaze's unlimited plan backed up one computer.
The presentation's capacities «2 GB» for pCloud and «10 GB» for IceDrive are typing mistakes: the report gives 2 TB and 5 TB.
OneDrive's «6 TB» was the family plan: six people with 1 TB each, not 6 TB for one person.
The Kurdish text wrote Mega's price as «16,500 thousand»; it was 16,500 dinars.
«Most used in Southern Kurdistan» had no survey behind it, so the lesson calls them «popular».

How Dropbox beganDropbox

Dropbox. The idea came from Drew Houston, an MIT student born in 1983, who kept forgetting his USB flash drive. He first built a fix for himself, then saw that other people had the same problem. With his fellow MIT student Arash Ferdowsi he founded the company in 2007 (first called Evenflow, Inc.), and Dropbox opened to the public in 2008. In his 2013 speech at MIT's graduation, Houston said that without MIT he would not have met Arash and there would be no Dropbox — and that the people around you matter about as much as talent or hard work.

Summary

Cloud storage keeps your files on a provider's servers, reachable anywhere with internet and shareable with people you allow.
An upload travels in packets to a data centre, is stored with copies and gets a link for sharing.
Advantages: flexibility, disaster recovery, collaboration, lower cost, sync. Weaknesses: security, the need for internet, speed.
Protect the account: a unique password and 2-step verification.
Sync is not a backup: deletions and damage sync too. Keep a separate copy (3-2-1).
Compare services by free space, devices, sharing, security and today's price — the 2021 tables are history.
