What is a network topology?

A network topology is the shape of a network: how its devices, called nodes, are joined to each other. A node is anything that sends or receives data on the network: a computer, a printer, a phone, a switch or a router. The shape decides three practical things: how much cable you need, what happens when one cable or device breaks, and how easy it is to add a new computer.

Drawing a real network: network diagrams

The seven shapes are ideas. A real network is drawn as a network diagram, also called a topology map: every router, switch, server, computer and printer as a symbol, every cable as a line, often with names, port numbers and IP addresses. Administrators keep one for each building, because when something breaks the diagram shows at once which cable and which switch port to check.

You can draw one on paper, but most people use a program: Microsoft Visio (paid; its network shapes come with Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2) or the free, open-source draw.io (diagrams.net), which works in a web browser or as a desktop app.

A point-to-point connection is one direct link between exactly two devices, with nothing in between. Examples: a cable that joins two computers directly; a microwave dish on one tower that talks only to a dish on another tower; a fibre cable laid between two buildings of the same company; your phone paired with your earbuds.

Because the link belongs to the two devices alone, it is fast and very reliable: no other device shares it, and no other device can block it. Its limit is just as clear: it joins only two nodes. To join many computers you need one of the other shapes, and a mesh is really many point-to-point links put together.

Bus topology

In a bus topology every computer and device is connected to one shared cable, called the backbone. When the cable has exactly two ends it is a linear bus. At each end sits a terminator, a small resistor that soaks up the signal so it does not bounce back along the cable and spoil the next message.

Bus topology

A bus is not a line

Some drawings show a line topology, also called a daisy chain, next to the bus. Both look like computers in a row, but they work differently. On a bus, every computer taps one shared cable, so every signal reaches everyone at once. In a line, each computer is cabled only to the next one, and a message is handed on from computer to computer, like a bucket passed along a row of people. A break splits a line into two parts that still work.

Because everyone on a bus shares one cable, only one computer can send at a time and the others wait their turn. This is called half duplex. A switch port today is full duplex: it sends and receives at the same moment. (Simplex, half duplex and full duplex are explained in Transmission modes: three ways data can flow.)

Ring topology

In a ring topology each computer is joined to the next one, and the last is joined back to the first, so the cables form a closed circle. Every device has exactly two neighbours. A message is passed on bit by bit from node to node, always in the same direction, until it reaches the node it is addressed to; every node on the way receives it and sends it on.

In a big ring a message may pass through many nodes. To reach the 100th node of a 100-node ring, data must pass through the 99 nodes before it. Each node acts as a repeater: it regenerates the signal before sending it on, so the data is not lost over the long journey.

Ring topology

Tokens, dual rings and rings today

How do the nodes of a ring avoid talking at the same time? Classic ring LANs used token passing: a short special message, the token, travels round and round the ring. A computer may send data only while it holds the token; then it passes the token to its neighbour. So two messages never collide, and adding traffic or nodes does not create chaos — the advantage the course mentions.

A way of taking turns on a network. A special small message, the token, travels round the ring, and only the device holding it may send data. So two devices never send at the same time.

A simple ring sends in one direction only, so one broken link or one failed computer breaks the circle. A dual ring adds a second ring of cables that carries data the opposite way. If one ring is cut, the traffic turns round onto the other ring and the network keeps working.

Who watches a token ring?

A token ring needs a guard. One station is chosen as the active monitor: it keeps the ring's timing, removes a message that circles forever because its sender has gone, and creates a new token if the token is lost. Every other station waits as a standby monitor, ready to take over.

The table above says that troubleshooting a ring is difficult; some course notes say the opposite, because all traffic stops right at a break. Both are partly true. On a plain ring a fault can be anywhere on the circle. Token Ring cards help: the station just after a break keeps sending a beacon message that names its upstream neighbour, so the fault lies between those two stations, on their cable or in one of them.

Routing and flooding

With so many paths, how does a message find its way through a mesh? The course names two techniques:

  • Routing. The nodes contain routing logic that chooses a path: for example the shortest way to the destination, a way that avoids broken links, or even logic that rebuilds the network around failed nodes. The routers of the Internet work like this.
  • Flooding. No logic at all: every node sends each message on to all its neighbours. The message arrives by every possible path, so it is very unlikely to be lost and the network is robust, but the same data crowds every link and wastes capacity.

Everyday analogy

Routing is like a taxi driver in Sulaimani who knows the roads, hears that Salim Street is closed and takes another street. Flooding is like phoning every relative with the same news and asking each of them to phone all of theirs: the news certainly arrives, but everybody's phone is busy.

A network repeats a flooded message only a limited number of times; real families keep calling.

Tree topology

A tree topology is a hierarchy: one root node at the top, other nodes connected below it, and more below those, like the branches of a tree. It is also called a hierarchical topology. In practice it is a tree of stars: each branch is a star around its own switch, and the switches are joined upwards to the root. The course adds that a tree should have at least three levels; with only two it would simply be a star.

How to choose a topology

When you plan a real network, weigh four things:

  • Cable length. A bus needs the least cable, a star one run from every device to the switch, and a full mesh the most.
  • Cable type. Twisted pair is cheap and fine up to 100 m; fibre is needed for longer runs or between buildings; coaxial cable belongs to old bus networks.
  • Cost. More cable, more switch ports and a more complex design cost more to buy, install and manage.
  • Scalability. Can you add a computer without stopping the others? In a star you plug a new cable into a free switch port; a ring must be opened, which stops it for a moment.

A signal on a bus travels in both directions from the sender and reaches every station; only the addressee keeps it, and the terminators at both ends absorb it. A bus is not always slower: it is fast with light traffic, but when many computers send at once their signals collide on the shared cable. A token ring avoided collisions because only the token holder could send, so it coped better with heavy traffic.

Answers differ. A good diagram has one symbol per device, a line per cable (dashed for Wi-Fi), a name on every device and, for a lab, the switch port of each cable, like the lab diagram in Drawing a real network. Most labs and homes are a star: every device goes to one switch or Wi-Fi router. When several switches are joined in layers, the whole building is a tree.

  • (a) A star around a switch: the twisted-pair runs are short, it is cheap and easy to grow. Next year a second switch on the new floor is joined to the first, which makes a small tree.
  • (b) A partial mesh between the branches: each branch is linked to at least two others, so when one link is cut the data takes another route. It costs more, but for a bank the reliability is worth it.

Summary

  • A topology is the shape of the links between the nodes of a network.
  • Point-to-point: one link, two devices (not the same as peer-to-peer).
  • Bus: one shared cable with terminators; signals go both ways; one break stops all. Obsolete in LANs.
  • Star: each device has its own cable to a switch; one cable fails → one device; switch fails → all. Today's LANs.
  • Ring: two neighbours each, data passes node to node, token passing; a dual ring survives one cut.
  • Mesh: many paths, robust, costly; a full mesh needs n(n−1)2\frac{n(n-1)}{2} links; data moves by routing or flooding.
