This chapter puts more kinds of objects on your slides. It has three lessons:

PowerPoint has a big library of more than 100 ready-made shapes: lines, rectangles, circles, arrows, stars, speech bubbles, flowchart symbols and more. You find them in two places: Insert > Shapes, or the Drawing group on the Home tab.

  1. Insert > Shapes, and click the shape you want in the gallery.

  2. Click on the slide and drag to draw it. (A single click gives a shape of a standard size.)

A selected rounded rectangle with the text 'Type your text here'. White circles at the corners and the middle of each side are sizing handles: drag one to make the shape bigger or smaller, and hold Shift while dragging a corner to keep the proportions. A round arrow above the shape is the rotation handle.   • Want another shape but keep the text and colours? Shape Format > Edit Shape > Change Shape.
  • Need the same shape many times? Right-click it in the Shapes gallery > Lock Drawing Mode, draw as many as you like, then press Esc.
  • To delete a shape, click its border and press Delete.

A text box puts text anywhere on a slide, outside the placeholders — for example a caption next to a picture.

When a shape, text box or WordArt is selected, the Shape Format tab appears. Like Picture Format, it is a contextual tab.

  • Shape Styles gallery: a ready-made mix of fill, outline and effect in one click.
  • Shape Fill: the inside — a colour, Picture…, Gradient, Texture or No Fill.
  • Shape Outline: the line around it — a colour, Weight (thickness), Dashes or No Outline.
  • Shape Effects: Shadow, Reflection, Glow, Soft Edges, Bevel and 3-D Rotation.
  • WordArt Styles does the same for the text: Text Fill, Text Outline and Text Effects (which also has Transform to bend text).

Sometimes the library does not have the shape you need — a cloud with a flat bottom, a moon, a ring, a waving flag. Then you build it yourself. There are two tools for this:

Merge Shapes is like a baker who presses two pieces of dough together, or cuts one piece out of another with a round cutter. Edit Points is like pushing and pulling the edge of one flat piece of dough with your fingers until it has the form you want.

Dough cannot be separated again, but in PowerPoint Ctrl+Z undoes a merge at once.

  1. Select the shapes you want to merge: click the first one, then press and hold Ctrl while you click each of the others in turn.

Draw two circles that overlap. Select them with Ctrl and try each of the five options, pressing Ctrl+Z after each one. Seeing the result once is worth more than reading about it.

  1. Select the shape you want to change.

  2. Shape Format > Insert Shapes > Edit Shape > Edit Points. Small black squares appear on the outline.

The white handles: click a black point and two white square handles appear on short lines. Drag a white handle to change how much the line between two black points curves — in other words, to bend it.

  • Add a point: hold Ctrl and click the outline where there is no point.
  • Delete a point: hold Ctrl and click the point.
  • Right-click a black point for more commands, such as Add Point, Delete Point, Smooth Point, Straight Point and Corner Point.

Draw two or three simple shapes, then use Merge Shapes to turn them into one new shape of your own — for example the cloud or the moon in the picture.

دوو یان سێ سادە بکێشە، پاشان بەکاربهێنە بۆ ئەوەی بیانکەیت بە نوێی خۆت — بۆ نموونە هەورەکە یان مانگەکەی ناو وێنەکە.

  1. Cloud: Insert > Shapes > Oval; draw three overlapping circles (hold Shift) and a rounded rectangle under them.
  2. Click the first shape, hold Ctrl, click the other three.
  3. Shape Format > Merge Shapes > Union. Then give it a white fill and a grey outline.
  4. Moon: draw a big circle, then a second circle overlapping its right side. Click the big circle first, Ctrl+click the second, then Merge Shapes > Subtract.

Draw a plain rectangle. Use Edit Shape > Edit Points and pull the corners until it is no longer a rectangle. Then try to make it look like a waving flag.

The lab of the Slides chapter has a second design task that needs shapes, so you build it here (see Slides and the Home tab). Make one slide with a dark-blue band across the top, a lighter blue band under it, a white strip with a circle for a logo on the left, your school's name next to it and the year on the right, and a dark-blue band at the bottom.

  2. Ctrl+D (or copy and paste) to duplicate it; move the copy under the first and give it a lighter blue. Make one more copy for the bottom.
  3. Draw a white rectangle for the strip and a circle (Shift+drag) on its left; fill the circle with a picture (Shape Fill > Picture…) or leave it empty for a logo.
  4. Insert > Text Box twice: the school's name next to the circle, the year at the right.
  5. Select the strip's objects with Ctrl > Align > Align Middle, then Group > Group.
