Definition

A flat round disc, such as a CD, DVD or Blu-ray, that is read and written with a laser. Today it is mostly used for films, music and old software.

An optical disc is a flat, round, portable disc made of plastic, a thin layer of shiny metal and a protective lacquer. A laser writes the data and reads it back — «optical» means «using light». CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs are all optical discs, and the machine that reads them is an optical drive.

Right, a cut through the disc, not to scale: from the top, the label, the lacquer, a shiny metal layer whose underside has pits and flat lands, and a thick layer of clear plastic. How a laser reads a discلەیزەر چۆن دیسک دەخوێنێتەوە

The data is a long line of tiny pits (dents) and flat areas called lands. The course explains reading in three steps:

  1. Shine

  2. Pit or land

Light that hits a pit is scattered. Light that hits a land is reflected straight back.

  3. Sense

The reflected light is turned towards a light-sensing diode. In the course's simple model, light means a 1 and no light means a 0.

An optical disc usually stores its data in a single track that spirals from the centre of the disc out to the edge, like the groove of a gramophone record.

Twenty years ago every computer had an optical drive. Today most laptops and many desktops have none: software, films and music are downloaded or streamed, and a USB flash drive holds far more than a DVD. Optical discs are now history for most people — but they still live in a few niches:

  • Films: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs give a picture quality that streaming often does not, and collectors buy them.
  • Games and music: some game consoles still sell disc editions, and CDs and records are bought by music fans.
  • Archives: a write-once disc cannot be changed by a virus, so some offices still keep records on it.
  • Reading old discs: if you have old CDs of photos, a cheap external USB optical drive still reads them — copy them to newer storage while the discs still work.

Magnetic stripe cards

Definition

A magnetic stripe card stores a little data in the dark stripe on its back. The stripe is a strip of magnetic material, like a tiny piece of tape, with three thin tracks: banks use track 2 and airlines track 1 (the only one that can hold letters, such as the card holder's name). When you swipe the card, a reader's head senses the magnetism, just as a hard disk head does (magstripe readers).

  • Where you still see them: hotel key cards, some gift and loyalty cards, older ID and transport cards, and on the back of most bank cards as a backup.
  • The weakness: the stripe says the same thing every time. A thief's hidden reader (a «skimmer») can copy it in one swipe and write it onto a fake card.
  • Going away: since 2024 new Mastercard cards in Europe and most other markets no longer need a stripe; from 2027 US banks no longer have to add one, and by 2033 no Mastercard credit or debit card will have a stripe.

RFID (radio-frequency identification) uses radio waves to identify things. An RFID tag is an antenna plus a memory chip that holds the information to send. An RFID reader sends out radio waves, picks up the tag's reply and passes the information to a computer. Most tags have no battery: the reader's radio waves power them for the moment they answer.

Summary

  • An optical disc stores data as pits and lands along one spiral track, starting at the centre; a laser reads it.
  • Simple model: reflected light = 1. Real discs: a pit–land change = 1, no change = 0.
  • CD 700 MB (infrared), DVD 4.7/8.5 GB (red), Blu-ray 25/50 GB (blue-violet): shorter light, smaller pits, more data.
  • ROM = read only, R = write once (WORM), RW/RE = rewritable; -R and +R were competing DVD formats.
  • Today optical discs are history for most people, kept for films, some games, music and unchangeable archives.
  • Magnetic stripes hold fixed data (easy to copy); smart cards have a chip that makes a new code for each payment.
  • RFID tags (chip + antenna) are read by radio without being seen; NFC is short-range RFID for phones, tags and contactless payment.
