When we describe a system, the process is usually more important than the person who does it. So technical English uses the passive a lot.

| The technician installs a switch. | A switch is installed (by the technician). |
| The router sends the data. | The data is sent by the router. |
| Rezan connected the printer last week. | The printer was connected last week. |
| They will upgrade the network in May. | The network will be upgraded in May. |
| Everyone can share the printer. | The printer can be shared by everyone. |
The passive in technical descriptions
Form: be + past participle (connected, sent, installed). Only be changes for tense: is/are sent, was/were sent, will be sent, can be sent, has been sent.
- Use it when the doer is unknown, obvious or not important: The office was connected in 2024.
- Use it for processes and systems: Data is split into packets, which are then sent across the network.
- Use it to keep the topic at the start of the sentence: The printer is shared by all staff.

- by واتە «لەلایەن ...

- log in to is the safe form in formal writing; log into is very common, especially in American English. Never log in the system.
- connect to a device or network; connect with people: connect with old classmates.
- on the internet, on the network (not in). Online is one word.
- No article after by: by cable, by Bluetooth. With over and via: over the network, via a VPN.

Work with a partner. Student A has a network problem: no internet, slow Wi-Fi, can’t log in, or the printer cannot be found. Student B is the technician. Use: “I can’t connect to…”, “Which network…?”, “Try plugging… into…”, “Is it on the network?”, “Restart the…”. Then change roles.

Start like this: “The network in my house is small. A fibre line is connected to…”
The network in my house is small. A fibre line is connected to…
Show answer
Model answer: The network in our house is small. A fibre line is connected to a router in the living room. The router was installed by our ISP last year. Two laptops, three phones and a smart TV are connected to it over Wi-Fi. My brother’s gaming PC is plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable, because he needs a fast, stable connection. Our printer is shared by everyone, so we can print from any device. The Wi-Fi is protected by a strong password.

- Turn on the Wi-Fi and connect to the guest network.

Going further: precise network English
- Internet or internet? Both are used. Many style guides now prefer lower case (the internet); older and some academic texts use the Internet. Choose one and be consistent.
- Modem, router, access point. A home “Wi-Fi box” often does all three jobs. In technical writing, name the function you mean: The router assigns IP addresses; the access point provides Wi-Fi.
- Wi-Fi names and security. Wi-Fi generations now have simple numbers: Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7. A Wi-Fi password is protected by WPA2 or, better, WPA3. Older books mention WEP, which is no longer safe.
- Bandwidth, speed, latency. Bandwidth is how much data per second (Mbps); latency is the delay (ms). Fast can mean either, so be precise: The link has high bandwidth but high latency, so video calls lag.
- Mbps or MB/s? A small b means bits, a capital B means bytes. 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB/s.
- Passive or active? Use the passive for processes; use the active when responsibility matters: The technician will replace the switch on Monday is clearer than The switch will be replaced.
Extension: short definitions with participles
Technical definitions often use a participle instead of a full relative clause: a device that connects networks → a device connecting networks; a cable that is used in LANs → a cable used in LANs. Rewrite these definitions in the same way. 1. A switch is a device that connects computers in a LAN. 2. A packet is a small piece of data that is sent across a network. 3. A hotspot is a place that offers Wi-Fi to the public.
