Where is the cloud?

Think about one ordinary day. You check Gmail, edit your group's report in Google Docs, watch a lecture on YouTube and ask an AI chatbot a question. None of these programs runs only on your phone. The real work happens on computers far away, which you reach through the internet. That is cloud computing.

This lesson grows out of a group report written in Kurdish for this course. Its aim is still ours: to introduce the cloud with everyday examples, explain the word simply, show why it matters and look at some of the companies that offer it. (The report calls a company «بەشکۆ», a word it took from the Hanbana Borina dictionary.) The report's comparison of services is taught in Cloud Storage.

What the word «cloud» means

The report explains the word well. The cloud is really a complex network of connected computers that can store a huge amount of data and information, and you reach it through the internet. The word «cloud» suggests that the stored data is physically far away from you, as if it were in a virtual sky.

A cloud full of rain

The report gives a lovely picture: the cloud holds our data the way a real cloud holds rain, and it sends the data down to us whenever we need it — on a phone, a laptop or a tablet.

The cloud is on the ground

Two facts complete the picture. First, nothing is in the sky: the data lives on servers in data centres, large buildings on the ground, often in another country. Second, the name comes from engineers' drawings. For decades they drew the telephone network, and later the internet, as a cloud shape that means «a big network whose inside we do not need to show». When companies began to sell computing over the internet, the name stayed.

Two panels. Left: how engineers draw it — a laptop, an arrow to a cloud shape labelled Internet, and an arrow to a server. The cloud shape stands for a network whose inside we do not need to show. Right: what is really there — a building on the ground with three racks of servers, a fan for cooling and a lightning bolt for power.

Inside a data centre

One slide of the course presentation, «Relation between the datacenter and cloud storage servers», was left empty. Here is what belongs on it. A data centre is a building made for computers: hall after hall of server racks, storage systems, fast network links, backup power from batteries and generators, strong cooling and guards. What a server is and why it sits in a rack is explained in Servers and data centres. Cloud providers add three things:

  • Many data centres in many regions. A provider has buildings in many countries. Customers can often choose the region, for example one closer to Kurdistan, so answers arrive faster.
  • Several copies. Your files and virtual servers are copied to more than one server, often to more than one building, so one broken disk — or even one flooded building — does not lose them.
  • People and automation, day and night. Machines are watched 24 hours a day. A broken server is replaced while customers keep working.

  • Clients: the devices and apps people use to reach the service — a phone, a laptop, a web browser.
  • Distributed servers: many servers, usually in several data centres and regions. They are far apart, but they work together as if they stood side by side, so one broken server — or one closed building — does not stop the service.
  • Management software: a central system that watches the traffic and what the clients ask for, and sends each request to a server with free capacity, so that everything runs smoothly.

  • Thick client: a full computer that runs programs itself and uses the cloud for some jobs — for example a laptop with Word installed that saves its files to OneDrive.
  • Thin client: a small box, or a browser-only laptop such as a Chromebook, that does almost no work itself and shows what runs on a server — see Terminals and thin clients.
  • Mobile client: an app on a phone or tablet, such as the Google Drive app.

What is cloud computing? The NIST definitionهەورەژمێرکاری چییە؟ پێناسەی NIST

The report and the presentation give two short definitions. Cloud computing means storing and reaching data and programs over the internet instead of on your own hard disk. In the report's words, it is also all the equipment and processes that work behind the scenes to serve cloud storage.

The definition IT professionals use comes from NIST, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (publication SP 800-145, 2011). In simple words: cloud computing gives people on-demand access over a network to a shared pool of computing resources — networks, servers, storage, applications and services — that can be taken and given back quickly, with very little work by the provider's staff. NIST then lists 5 characteristics, 3 service models and 4 deployment models:

The presentation gives the clearest contrast. Cloud storage lets you keep data on the internet as you would save it on a computer — iCloud, Google Drive and OneDrive are examples — and share it. Think of a taxi app in Erbil on the first day of Eid. You book a car yourself, at any hour, without phoning anyone (self-service). Any phone with the app works (broad network access). The company's cars serve everyone, and you do not choose which car (pooling). When the queue grows, the company calls more drivers onto the road, and sends them home when it is quiet (elasticity). Virtualization: one computer acting as manyگریمانەسازی: یەک کۆمپیوتەر وەک چەندین کۆمپیوتەر

Servers used to run one job each — one for the website, one for the database, one for email — and most of the day they sat idle. Virtualization ends this waste. A program called a hypervisor runs on the real, physical machine and divides its processors, memory, disks and network into several virtual machines (VMs). As the report says, each VM works like a real computer with a complete operating system — yet it is only a slice of a bigger machine.

Animation in six steps. 1: three old servers each run one job — a shop website, a database, email — and their CPU bars show only 10 to 18 percent use. 2: one powerful physical server. 3: a hypervisor layer appears on its hardware. 4: the hypervisor creates three virtual machines, each with its own operating system (Linux, Linux, Windows) and job; CPU use rises to 46 percent. 5: one virtual machine crashes and is crossed out; the other two keep running. 6: a fourth virtual machine is added for the busy shop; CPU use is 62 percent.

Who runs all those machines?

A big data centre runs thousands of virtual machines — far too many to start and move by hand. A central management system (often called orchestration) does it automatically: it watches the traffic and what each customer asks for, starts more virtual machines when demand grows, moves them off a server that needs repair and shuts them down when they are no longer needed.

Programs that run on different machines also need a common way to talk to each other. The layer of software between the programs and the operating system or network that gives them this common way is called middleware. Today it is often a web service or an API — see Web APIs.

Grid computing: many owners, one big task⁦Grid computing⁩:

Cloud computing is not the only way to share many computers. In grid computing, computers that belong to many different owners — often in different countries — are joined for a time so that together they act like one huge virtual supercomputer for one big task. The task is cut into many small pieces; each computer (a node of the grid) works on its pieces and sends the results back. Special grid software — middleware — hands out the pieces and collects the answers.

The best-known grids use volunteer computing. People install a free program — BOINC, from the University of California, Berkeley, or the Folding@home app — and while the computer is idle it works on a small piece of a science problem, such as how proteins move and fold. Folding@home says that in 2020 so many volunteers joined that their computers together were the first system to pass one exaflop: 101810^{18} calculations per second.

Lana is opening an online bookshop in Duhok. She can buy a server, find a cool room with good power for it and pay someone to look after it — all before her first sale. Or she can rent a small virtual server in the cloud, pay only for what she uses and grow it when sales grow.

One risk in the table is the provider's downtime, and it is not only theory. On 20 October 2025 a hidden fault in the automatic system that manages the DNS records of DynamoDB, one of Amazon's database services, wiped out that service's address in one AWS region, Northern Virginia (us-east-1). Many other AWS services depend on it, so apps and websites around the world that run there failed. AWS's own report says the trouble lasted from 11:48 p.m. on 19 October to 2:20 p.m. on 20 October, US Pacific time — about 14½ hours.

The lesson for customers: important services should not depend on one region, and they need a plan for the hours when the cloud is down. That is why providers build many regions — see Inside a data centre. DNS, the internet's address book, is explained in DNS.

Summary

  • «The cloud» is servers in data centres on the ground, reached over the internet; the name comes from the cloud shape engineers draw for a network.
  • NIST: on-demand network access to a shared pool of resources, taken and given back quickly — with five characteristics, three service models and four deployment models.
  • Every cloud service has clients (thick, thin or mobile), distributed servers in several data centres and regions, and management software that shares out the work.
  • IaaS rents machines, PaaS runs your code, SaaS gives a finished app; your data and accounts stay your job.
  • Virtualization lets a hypervisor split one physical server into many virtual machines.
  • Grid computing joins many owners' computers for one big shared task (for example volunteer computing); a cloud rents one provider's machines to many customers.
