What makes a technology "emerging"?

An emerging technology is one that is new, is growing fast and is not yet part of everyday life for most people. Some emerging technologies become ordinary: smartphones were "emerging" around 2008 and are now in almost every pocket. Others fade away: 3D televisions were sold widely around 2010–2015, and makers stopped producing them a few years later.

So this lesson is a snapshot of October 2026. Numbers and products in this field change every year: when you read a claim about a new technology, look at its date and its source, and be careful with words like "revolution".

Immersive experiences

An immersive experience fills your senses — sight, sound, sometimes touch and movement — so strongly that you feel you are inside a world made by a computer. Driving and flight simulators use it to train people safely, 3D films and games use it for fun, and engineers use it to walk through a building before it is built.

There are three main ways to build one: virtual reality replaces the world you see, augmented reality adds to it, and mixed reality lets the two meet. The next three screens look at each.

Immersive experiences

Virtual reality: a world made by the computer

In virtual reality (VR) everything you see is made by the computer. You wear a VR headset with a small screen in front of each eye. Sensors inside it follow your head, so when you turn, the picture turns with you; cameras or hand controllers follow your hands, so you can pick things up. Sound comes from the direction of each object, and controllers vibrate when you touch something.

VR is used to train pilots, surgeons, firefighters and drivers without danger, for games, to visit places far away (a virtual museum tour), for design (walking through a house before it is built) and in some therapies. Its weak points: some people feel sick in VR, the headset is heavy for long use, and you cannot see the real room — so you need a clear space. Headsets such as Meta Quest 3 (2023) and Apple Vision Pro (2024) can show both VR and mixed reality.

Augmented reality: information on top of the real worldڕاستیی زیادکراو: زانیاری لەسەر جیهانی ڕاستەقینە

Augmented reality (AR) keeps the real world and adds computer-made information on top of it. Usually you look through your phone's camera; smart glasses and the head-up display of some cars do the same. AR does not create a new world — it changes how you see the one in front of you.

  • Location-based AR: on a school trip, Dilan points her phone at an old stone bridge and the screen shows when it was built and by whom.
  • Navigation: arrows drawn on the real street in the camera view show where to turn.
  • Shopping: a furniture app places a sofa, at its real size, in your own living room before you buy it.
  • Games and work: the game Pokémon Go (2016) made AR famous; engineers see repair steps drawn over a real machine.

Robots: sense, decide, act

A robot is a machine that a computer controls and that can carry out tasks by itself. Every robot does three things in a loop: it senses the world with sensors (cameras, distance sensors, touch sensors), decides what to do with its program, and acts with motors, wheels, arms or grippers. Unlike an ordinary machine, a robot is programmable: change the program and it does a different job.

Robotics is the field that designs, builds and programs robots; it joins mechanical engineering, electronics and computer science. Robots come as wheeled robots, legged robots, robot arms and humanoids (shaped like a person). Examples: arms that weld cars in a factory, robots that carry shelves in warehouses, robot vacuum cleaners, surgical robots that a surgeon guides, and NASA's Mars rover Perseverance, which landed in Jezero Crater on 18 February 2021 and in October 2026 set a new record for the longest drive on another world (about 45 km). Humanoid robots are improving fast but are still mostly tested in laboratories and trial factories.

Robots: sense, decide, act

Drones: robots that fly

A drone is an aircraft with no pilot on board. Someone flies it by remote control, or it flies by itself along a planned route using GPS, a camera and motion sensors that keep it level. Drones are used for mapping land and cities, filming, delivering small parcels and medicines over short distances, search and rescue (a heat camera can find a lost person at night), checking bridges and power lines, and farming: a drone can spray only where it is needed and photograph a whole field in minutes.

For example, a farmer near Hewler sends a drone over his wheat field in May. Its camera shows which parts are drier and paler than the rest, so he waters and fertilises only those patches — less water, less chemicals, more wheat. And on Mars, NASA's small helicopter Ingenuity made 72 flights: the first powered, controlled flights on another planet.

  • (a) Drones map the damage and find trapped people with heat cameras; small robots crawl into broken buildings. Risk: radio links fail where the network is down.
  • (b) Drones spray only sick plants and photograph crop health; robots pick fruit or milk cows. Risk: expensive for small farmers, and they still need someone to repair them.
  • (c) Surgical robots help surgeons make small, steady cuts; delivery robots carry medicines between floors; drones fly blood samples to distant clinics. Risk: a software fault can harm a patient, so a trained person must stay in charge.

A computer network used to mean computers, phones and printers. The Internet of Things (IoT) adds everyday objects: lamps, door locks, water meters, fridges, cameras, fitness bands, even rubbish bins. Each one contains a small computer — usually a microcontroller (see Microcontrollers) — with sensors to measure something, a network connection (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the mobile network) and often an actuator to do something, such as a motor that turns a lock.

The devices send their data to an app or to a server in the cloud, and you can watch and control them from your phone. Examples: a smart lock that opens with your phone; a fitness band that counts steps and heartbeats; a smart electricity meter that sends its readings by itself; a water-level sensor in the roof tank that warns you before the tank runs dry; a security camera you can watch from far away.

How many are there? The market-research firm IoT Analytics estimated about 21 billion connected IoT devices at the end of 2025 — not counting phones and computers — and expects around 39 billion by 2030. About a third of them connect by Wi-Fi, a quarter by Bluetooth and a fifth by mobile networks. The name "Internet of Things" was coined in 1999, but one of the first connected things was older: in 1982 a drinks machine at Carnegie Mellon University reported over the network whether its drinks were cold.

The Web of Things: one language for all things

Hana has a smart lamp from one company, a door lock from another and an air conditioner from a third. Each came with its own app, and none of them talk to each other: with nn makers she needs nn apps. The Web of Things (WoT) fixes this with the tools the Web already uses: every thing gets a web address (URL), you talk to it with HTTP, and its data travels as JSON. Then one web page or one app can control all of them.

So IoT and WoT are not rivals. The Internet of Things connects the things to the network; the Web of Things is a layer on top that makes them speak the Web's common language.

One unit of weight in the bazaar

Imagine a bazaar where every shop weighs with its own old unit: one in "mann", one in "huqqa", one in kilos. You need a different conversion for every shop. The Web of Things is like everyone agreeing to write prices per kilo: nothing about the goods changes, but now anyone can compare and order from any shop.

Where the analogy stops working

The Web of Things does not replace the devices' own radio protocols; it describes the devices so that apps can use them.

A sensor detects something in the physical world — light, heat, movement, sound, pressure, position — and turns it into data. Sensors that become smaller, better and cheaper every year are what made the Internet of Things possible. A smart sensor goes one step further: it has its own tiny processor and checks or cleans its readings before passing them on.

Cities keep growing, and so do traffic jams, rubbish, lost water and dusty air. A smart city puts sensors, networks and data to work so that its services run better. The sensors send their readings over the network to a control centre, where software — and people — decide what to do.

Blockchain: one notebook, many copies

When you pay by card, book a ticket or move money between bank accounts, the record is kept in one central database that belongs to the bank or the company. Everyone must trust that owner: to keep the record safe, to back it up, not to change old entries and not to be hacked. One central place can be attacked, lost or changed.

A blockchain keeps such a record — a ledger — in a different way. Instead of one owner, many computers (nodes) each keep a full copy of the same ledger. New entries are added only after the network has checked them, and entries are only ever added: old ones are never rubbed out or written over (an append-only ledger). Because every node has a copy, nobody can quietly change history in their own copy — the others would see that it no longer matches.

Blocks, hashes and the copy of the chain every node keeps; why changing one block breaks the chain; proof of work.

Blockchain explained simply: blocks, hashes, a shared ledger and proof of work.

The shopkeepers' shared notebook

Five shopkeepers in the bazaar sell on credit to the same customers. Instead of trusting one notebook kept by one of them, each keeps a copy of the same notebook. A new line is written only after they have all checked it, and then all five copies get the same line. If one shopkeeper rubs out a debt in his copy, the other four copies prove him wrong.

Where the analogy stops working

Real blockchains are checked by software and cryptography, not by people reading, and they may have thousands of copies in many countries.

The idea was first used on a large scale by Bitcoin in 2009. NIST, the US standards institute, describes blockchains as ledgers that are tamper evident (a change is easy to see) and tamper resistant (a change is very hard to make) — not as ledgers that can never be changed.

Blocks chained by hashes

Entries are grouped into blocks. A block has two parts: a header — the block's number, the time, a hash of this block's data and the hash of the previous block's header — and the data, a list of checked transactions.

A hash is a short fingerprint of data: change one letter and the hash changes completely (see Hashing: a fingerprint of the data). Because each block stores the previous block's hash, the blocks form a chain. Change a transaction in block 5 and block 5's hash changes; block 6 still holds the old hash, so the link breaks and every node can see it. To hide the change you would have to rebuild blocks 6, 7, 8 and so on, and persuade the rest of the network to accept your copy — which is extremely hard.

Three blocks in a row, numbered 4, 5 and 6. Each block shows a header with "previous hash", "time" and "data hash", and a data area listing transactions. An arrow from each block's hash points into the "previous hash" field of the next block. In block 5 one transaction has been changed (marked in orange); its new hash no longer matches the value stored in block 6, and the broken link is marked with a cross: "does not match — every node can see it".

Each transaction is also digitally signed with the sender's private key; anyone can check the signature with the sender's public key, so nobody can spend someone else's money (see Digital signatures: proving who sent it). That is also why losing your private key means losing what it controls: no bank can reset it.

A transaction's journey

Follow one transaction from start to finish: Aram sends 10 units of a digital currency to Shilan.

Six steps
  1. Request

Aram's wallet app creates the transaction "Aram → Shilan: 10" and signs it with his private key.

  2. Broadcast

The transaction is sent to nodes of the network, which pass it on to each other.

  3. Check

Every node checks it for itself: is the signature valid? Does Aram really have 10 units? Has he not already spent them?

  4. New block

Valid transactions waiting in the queue are packed into a new block that points to the previous block's hash. The network agrees, by its consensus rules, which block comes next.

  5. Chain and copies

The new block is added to the chain, and every node adds it to its own copy of the ledger.

  6. Done

Shilan's wallet shows 10 more units. The record cannot be quietly changed or deleted; many users wait until a few more blocks are added on top before they treat a payment as final.

Animation in 8 frames. Aram's phone creates a signed transaction "10 units to Shilan". It is broadcast to five nodes arranged in a circle; each node shows a tick as it checks the signature and the balance. The transaction is packed into a new block, which is linked by a hash arrow to the end of the existing chain. Then the chain shown under every node grows by one block, so all five copies are the same again, and Shilan's phone shows +10.

Who adds the next block?

Many nodes may want to add the next block at the same moment, and some might cheat. So every blockchain has fixed consensus rules: the way all nodes agree which block comes next.

  • Proof of work (PoW): computers race to solve a guessing puzzle — trying billions of numbers until the block's hash starts with enough zeros. The winner adds the block and gets a reward. Checking the answer takes a single hash, but finding it uses a great deal of electricity. Bitcoin uses it and adds a block about every ten minutes.
  • Proof of stake (PoS): members lock up some of their own coins as a guarantee; one of them is chosen to propose the next block, and a cheater can lose the coins. It needs far less energy: when Ethereum moved from proof of work to proof of stake on 15 September 2022, its energy use fell by about 99.95 %.
  • Known members: in a permissioned blockchain only approved organisations — for example a group of banks or ministries — may add blocks, so they can simply take turns. This is faster and cheaper, but you must trust the group.

What blockchains are used forبلۆکچەین بۆ چی بەکار دێت؟

  • Digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) such as Bitcoin and Ethereum — the first and still the biggest use.
  • Supply chains: recording each step of a product from the farm to the shop, so buyers can check where honey or a medicine came from.
  • Land and property registers: a shared record of who owns which plot, which makes fake ownership papers harder.
  • Health records: letting hospitals share a patient's record with permission, while recording who looked at it.
  • Certificates: a university records each diploma, so an employer can check that it is genuine.
  • Banking and payments: settling payments between banks without one central clearing house.
  • Voting: tried in small pilots; experts warn that keeping the ballot secret and the voters' devices safe are hard problems that a blockchain alone does not solve.

Organisations look at blockchains because they can make records transparent (everyone sees the same list), accountable (every entry is signed and kept) and efficient (fewer middlemen).

Honest limits

  • Garbage in, garbage out. A blockchain proves that a record has not changed since it was written — not that it was true when it was written. A careless clerk or a broken sensor can still enter wrong data.
  • Energy. Proof-of-work networks such as Bitcoin use a very large amount of electricity.
  • Lost and stolen keys. Lose your private key and what it controls is gone; a thief who steals it can send the money away, and the payment generally cannot be undone. Most "crypto thefts" in the news are stolen keys, not broken blockchains.
  • Not truly unchangeable. The newest blocks can be replaced (competing chains, a 51 % attack), so users wait for several blocks.
  • Slower and costlier than an ordinary database, because every node stores and checks everything.
  • Privacy. On a public blockchain every transaction is visible to everyone, for ever. Users are known by an address, not a name — pseudonymous, which is not the same as anonymous. Health records and other personal data do not belong on a public chain.
  • Blockchain is not Bitcoin. Bitcoin is one application; a blockchain is a way to keep a shared ledger.

A fund in the Kurdistan Region pays a monthly grant to 500 university students. Students complain that payments arrive late and that nobody can see where the money goes. Write a short report (six to eight sentences): how could a blockchain make the payments transparent, accountable and efficient? Who would keep copies of the ledger? What would a blockchain not fix?

Show answer

Proposal. The fund, the ministry, the universities and an independent auditor run a permissioned blockchain together, each keeping a full copy. Every grant decision and every monthly payment is a signed transaction, so it is clear who approved it and when. Each student can check his or her own payments with a student number instead of a name, and the auditor can check the totals at any time instead of once a year. Because no single office can quietly change or delete an entry, money cannot vanish without a trace, and delays become visible: the date of approval and the date of payment are both recorded. Simple rules, such as "pay on the 1st of each month", can be run automatically.

Limits. A blockchain cannot tell whether the list of students was right in the first place; personal data must stay off the chain; staff need training, and the system needs electricity and the Internet. A well-audited ordinary database with a monthly public report might already solve much of the problem.

Summary

  • Emerging technologies are new, growing fast and not yet everywhere; this lesson is a snapshot of October 2026. AI, ML, big data and the cloud are taught in their own lessons.
  • Immersive experiences fill your senses: VR replaces the world, AR adds to it, mixed reality blends the two.
  • Robots sense, decide and act; drones are robots that fly — useful for mapping, rescue and farming, and controlled by rules.
  • The Internet of Things connects everyday objects with sensors; the Web of Things gives them a common web language.
  • A phone is full of sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, GPS, proximity, light, fingerprint and more.
  • Smart cities use sensors and data for traffic, parking, light, water and waste, but bring risks: privacy, hacking, power cuts and wrong data.
  • A blockchain is a shared, append-only ledger: blocks linked by hashes, transactions signed with private keys, new blocks added by consensus (proof of work or proof of stake).
  • Blockchains are tamper evident, not magic: they do not make wrong data true, they can use much energy, and lost keys are lost for good.
