Look at these words: program, programmer, programming, programmable, reprogram. If you know one, you can guess the others. English builds IT words like LEGO: a root, plus small pieces at the front (prefixes) or at the end (suffixes), or two words together (compound nouns).

سەیری ئەم وشانە بکە: program, programmer, programming, programmable, reprogram. ئەگەر یەکێکیان بزانیت، دەتوانیت واتای ئەوانی تر بزانیت. ئینگلیزی وشەکانی IT وەک لێگۆ دروست دەکات: ڕەگێک، لەگەڵ پارچەی بچووک لە سەرەتا () یان لە کۆتایی ()، یان دوو وشە پێکەوە ().

This skill is very useful: new technology brings new words every year (cyberattack, e-wallet, overclock). If you know how words are built, you can often understand them without a dictionary.

For English speakers: how compound nouns workبۆ ئینگلیزیزمانان

The head is last. The last noun says what the thing is; the nouns before it describe it. A laser printer is a printer; a printer cartridge is a cartridge. Read long compounds from right to left: a document image processing program is a program that processes images of documents.

Relationships. The first noun can show material (silicon chip), purpose or function (input device, search engine), a part of something (computer keyboard), or the activity of a person (systems analyst, software developer). To explain a compound, unpack it: a barcode reader is a device that reads barcodes.

Singular modifiers and stress. The first noun is normally singular even when the meaning is plural: a password manager (not passwords manager), a 512-gigabyte drive. The main stress usually falls on the first word: a COMputer shop, a NETwork cable.

Spelling. Compounds can be open (web page), hyphenated (e-learning) or closed (website, keyboard), and spelling changes over time (e-mail → email, web site → website). Check a current dictionary and be consistent.

Acronyms and abbreviations: how to say themئەکرۆنیمەکان و کورتکراوەکان: چۆن دەگوترێن

A or an before an acronym?a یان an پێش ئەکرۆنیمێک؟

A or an? Choose by the first sound, not the first letter. These letters begin with a vowel sound when you say them: A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S, X. So: an SSD, an HTML file, an MP3, an ISP, an IT technician. The other letters begin with a consonant sound, including U (/juː/): a CPU, a USB port, a URL, a PDF. An acronym said as a word follows its first sound: a RAM chip, a LAN.

a یان an؟ بەپێی یەکەم دەنگ هەڵبژێرە، نەک یەکەم پیت. ئەم پیتانە کاتێک دەیانڵێیت بە دەنگی بزوێن دەست پێدەکەن: A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S, X (بۆ نموونە S = «ئێس»، H = «ئێچ»). بۆیە: an SSD، an HTML file، an MP3، an ISP، an IT technician. پیتەکانی تر بە دەنگی نەبزوێن دەست پێدەکەن، لەوانە U («یوو»): a CPU، a USB port، a URL، a PDF. ئەو وەک وشە دەگوترێت بەپێی یەکەم دەنگی خۆی: a RAM chip، a LAN.

I use a three-year-old laptop for my studies. It has an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 256-gigabyte SSD. At home, I plug it into a 24-inch monitor, and I use a wireless keyboard and an ergonomic mouse. I connect to the internet through our home Wi-Fi network, and at university I use the campus network.

The laptop is still compatible with all my software, but it is getting slow. I want to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB and buy a bigger SSD. I also back up my files to the cloud every Friday.

Near-synonyms. Fast often describes speed of operation (a fast processor); quick often describes a short time or action (a quick question). Wrong is everyday (the wrong button); incorrect is more formal (an incorrect password). Obsolete means no longer used at all; old-fashioned means out of style but still usable.

Adjective + noun collocations. Learn adjectives with their nouns: flat battery, wireless network, latest model, high-resolution screen, user-friendly interface, plug-and-play device. Collocations make technical English sound natural.

-ize or -ise? US English uses -ize (customize, optimize). British English accepts both; Oxford spelling prefers -ize, but many UK writers use -ise. Choose one and be consistent. Analyse (UK) / analyze (US) is a separate case.

Acronym style. Most style guides write acronyms without full stops (CPU, USB), form plurals with s and no apostrophe (CPUs, URLs), and spell out an acronym the first time: two-factor authentication (2FA). Avoid redundancy such as PIN number or ATM machine.

Hyphens in measurements. Before a noun, join a number and a unit with a hyphen and keep the unit singular: a 512-gigabyte SSD, a 14-inch screen, a three-year-old laptop. After the noun there is no hyphen: The SSD is 512 gigabytes.
