Same expected value, different risk

The expected value tells you where a random variable is centred. It does not tell you how far its values wander from that centre. Look at two games. In both, E(X)=0E(X) = 0: on average you neither win nor lose.

Two stem graphs side by side. Game A has stems at −2, −1, 0, 1, 2 with probabilities 1/10, 2/10, 4/10, 2/10, 1/10, crowded around 0; its variance is 1.2 and its standard deviation about 1.10. Game B has only two stems, at −3 and 3, each with probability 1/2; its variance is 9 and its standard deviation 3. Both have expected value 0.

Game A usually ends close to 0; Game B always ends 3 points away from its average. That difference is the risk of the game. For data you measured spread with the variance and standard deviation; this lesson builds the same tools for a random variable, from its probabilities.

Moments: one family of expectations

The course measures spread with moments. A moment is the expected value of a power of the distance from a chosen point aa. The power rr says which moment it is (first, second, …):

کۆرسەکە بڵاوبوونەوە بە دەپێوێت. دووریی نێوان XX و خاڵێکی هەڵبژێردراوی aaـیە. rr دەڵێت کام (یەکەم، دووەم، …):

The rr-th moment of X about aa, for r=1,2,3,…r = 1, 2, 3, \dots It is the expected value of (x−a)r(x - a)^r, so the rule E(g(X))=∑g(x) P(x)E(g(X)) = \sum g(x)\,P(x) does all the work.

Three choices of the point aa get their own names. You met the same three for data in Moments; here the weights are probabilities instead of frequencies.

Variance and standard deviation of Xلێکنەچوون و لادانی پێوانەیی X

The variance of X is its second central moment: the expected value of the squared distance from the mean. The standard deviation is its square root, which brings the unit back to the unit of X.

This is the same idea as the population variance of data. If X picks one of NN data values at random, each has probability 1N\tfrac1N, and ∑(x−μ)2⋅1N\sum (x - \mu)^2 \cdot \tfrac1N is exactly ∑(xi−μ)2N\frac{\sum (x_i - \mu)^2}{N}. Data give a variance from what happened; a random variable gives it from what can happen and how likely it is.

The shortcut: Example 18

The course gives a second formula that is quicker by hand: the variance is "the mean of the square minus the square of the mean". It follows from the rules of expectation, because μ\mu is a constant:

کۆرسەکە فۆرمولەیەکی دووەم دەدات کە بە دەست خێراترە: « دووجا کەم دووجای »ـە. لە یاساکانی دەردەچێت، چونکە μ\mu :

E(X−μ)2=E(X2−2μX+μ2)=E(X2)−2μ E(X)+μ2=E(X2)−2μ2+μ2=E(X2)−[E(X)]2\begin{aligned} E(X - \mu)^2 &= E\big(X^2 - 2\mu X + \mu^2\big) \\ &= E(X^2) - 2\mu\,E(X) + \mu^2 \\ &= E(X^2) - 2\mu^2 + \mu^2 = E(X^2) - [E(X)]^2 \end{aligned}

Expand the square, use E(aX+b)=aE(X)+bE(aX + b) = aE(X) + b term by term, then put E(X)=μE(X) = \mu.

دووجاکە بکەرەوە، E(aX+b)=aE(X)+bE(aX + b) = aE(X) + b بەش بە بەش بەکاربهێنە، پاشان E(X)=μE(X) = \mu دابنێ.

Example 18. For P(x)=x10P(x) = \frac{x}{10}, x=1,…,4x = 1, \dots, 4, find σ2(X)\sigma^2(X) and σ\sigma. Both moments are already known (Example 14 and the board):

σ2=E(X2)−[E(X)]2=10−32=10−9=1,σ=1=1\sigma^2 = E(X^2) - [E(X)]^2 = 10 - 3^2 = 10 - 9 = 1, \qquad \sigma = \sqrt{1} = 1

Check with the definition: (1−3)2(0.1)+(2−3)2(0.2)+(3−3)2(0.3)+(4−3)2(0.4)=0.4+0.2+0+0.4=1(1-3)^2(0.1) + (2-3)^2(0.2) + (3-3)^2(0.3) + (4-3)^2(0.4) = 0.4 + 0.2 + 0 + 0.4 = 1. Same answer. For the density f(x)=2xf(x) = 2x on (0,1)(0, 1) the shortcut gives σ2=12−(23)2=118\sigma^2 = \tfrac12 - \left(\tfrac23\right)^2 = \tfrac{1}{18} and σ=26≈0.236\sigma = \tfrac{\sqrt2}{6} \approx 0.236.

E(X−a)2=σ2+(μ−a)2E(X - a)^2 = \sigma^2 + (\mu - a)^2

Then Var⁡(2X+1)=4×0.61=2.44\operatorname{Var}(2X + 1) = 4 \times 0.61 = 2.44: the +1+1 does nothing and the ×2\times 2 multiplies the variance by 4. نیشانی بدە کە بۆ هەر aa: E(X−a)2=σ2+(μ−a)2E(X - a)^2 = \sigma^2 + (\mu - a)^2.

Hint

Write X−aX - a as (X−μ)+(μ−a)(X - \mu) + (\mu - a).

X−aX - a وەک (X−μ)+(μ−a)(X - \mu) + (\mu - a) بنووسە.

Show answer
E(X−a)2=E((X−μ)+(μ−a))2=E(X−μ)2+2(μ−a) E(X−μ)+(μ−a)2=σ2+2(μ−a)⋅0+(μ−a)2\begin{aligned} E(X - a)^2 &= E\big((X - \mu) + (\mu - a)\big)^2 \\ &= E(X - \mu)^2 + 2(\mu - a)\,E(X - \mu) + (\mu - a)^2 \\ &= \sigma^2 + 2(\mu - a)\cdot 0 + (\mu - a)^2 \end{aligned}

The middle term vanishes because the first central moment is 0.

Summary

  • The r-th moment about a is E(X−a)rE(X - a)^r (a sum or an integral). a=0a = 0: moments about the origin; a=μa = \mu: central moments; any other aa: non-central.
  • The first central moment is always 0: E(X−μ)=0E(X - \mu) = 0.
  • Variance σ2=E(X−μ)2=E(X2)−[E(X)]2≥0\sigma^2 = E(X - \mu)^2 = E(X^2) - [E(X)]^2 \ge 0; standard deviation σ=σ2\sigma = \sqrt{\sigma^2} in the unit of X.
  • E(X−a)2=σ2+(μ−a)2E(X - a)^2 = \sigma^2 + (\mu - a)^2: the second moment is smallest about the mean.
  • Var⁡(aX+b)=a2Var⁡(X)\operatorname{Var}(aX + b) = a^2\operatorname{Var}(X); for independent X and Y, variances add; a Bernoulli variable has variance pqpq.
  • Course results for x/10x/10: E(X)=3E(X) = 3, E(X2)=10E(X^2) = 10, E(X−2)2=2E(X - 2)^2 = 2 (not the board's 1210\tfrac{12}{10}), σ2=1\sigma^2 = 1, σ=1\sigma = 1. For 2x2x: 116\tfrac{11}{6}, 12\tfrac12, 0, σ2=118\sigma^2 = \tfrac{1}{18}.
E(X−a)rE(X - a)^r (کۆ یان ). a=0a = 0: دەربارەی سفر؛ a=μa = \mu: ؛ aaـی تر: ناناوەندی.
  • σ2=E(X−μ)2=E(X2)−[E(X)]2≥0\sigma^2 = E(X - \mu)^2 = E(X^2) - [E(X)]^2 \ge 0؛ σ=σ2\sigma = \sqrt{\sigma^2} بە یەکەی X.
  • E(X−a)2=σ2+(μ−a)2E(X - a)^2 = \sigma^2 + (\mu - a)^2: دووەم دەربارەی بچووکترینە.
  • Var⁡(aX+b)=a2Var⁡(X)\operatorname{Var}(aX + b) = a^2\operatorname{Var}(X)؛ بۆ XX و YYـی سەربەخۆ کۆ دەکرێتەوە؛ گۆڕاوی بێرنۆلی pqpqـیە.
