The three elementary row operations

The notes use row operations without naming them. There are exactly three , and each one has a short notation (R2R_2 means “row 2”):

Every operation can be undone, so no information is lost — that is why k=0k = 0 is not allowed (multiplying a row by 0 wipes it out). Their effect on the determinant is in Properties of Determinants; here they build inverses.

Write AA and the side by side, with a line between them. This long matrix is the [A∣I][A \mid I]. Then use row operations on the whole rows until the left half becomes II. The right half is then A−1A^{-1}. This is , Method 3 of the notes.

Why it works. Each row operation is the same as multiplying on the left by a simple matrix. If the operations turn AA into II, their combined matrix EE satisfies EA=IEA = I, so E=A−1E = A^{-1}. The right half started as II and received the same operations, so it ends as EI=E=A−1EI = E = A^{-1}.

ئەگەر کارەکان AA بکەن بە II، کۆکراوەکەیان EE EA=IEA = I دەکات، بۆیە E=A−1E = A^{-1}. EI=E=A−1EI = E = A^{-1} کۆتایی دێت.

Work column by column, from left to right:

  1. Get a 1 on the diagonal of this column: swap in a row whose entry here is not 0, or multiply the row by 1k\tfrac1k.
  2. Make every other entry of the column 0, above and below, with Ri→Ri−kRjR_i \to R_i - kR_j, where RjR_j is the row with the 1.
  3. Move to the next column. When the left half is II, read A−1A^{-1} on the right.

The notes' example: find A−1A^{-1} for A=[1234]A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix} by Gauss–Jordan.

The first step clears column 1, the second puts a 1 on the diagonal, the third clears column 2. So A−1=[−2132−12]A^{-1} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & 1 \\ \frac32 & -\frac12 \end{bmatrix}.

A−1=[−2132−12]A^{-1} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & 1 \\ \frac32 & -\frac12 \end{bmatrix}.

Compare with the 2×22 \times 2 shortcut: det⁡A=4−6=−2\det A = 4 - 6 = -2 and 1−2[4−2−31]=[−2132−12]\frac{1}{-2}\begin{bmatrix} 4 & -2 \\ -3 & 1 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & 1 \\ \frac32 & -\frac12 \end{bmatrix} — the same matrix, as it must be: a matrix has only one inverse.

2×22 \times 2: det⁡A=4−6=−2\det A = 4 - 6 = -2 و 1−2[4−2−31]=[−2132−12]\frac{1}{-2}\begin{bmatrix} 4 & -2 \\ -3 & 1 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & 1 \\ \frac32 & -\frac12 \end{bmatrix} — هەمان ، وەک دەبێت وابێت: تەنها یەک پێچەوانەی هەیە.

When there is no inverse

If AA is singular, Gauss–Jordan tells you by itself: at some point a row of zeros appears in the left half. Then the left half can never become II, so there is no inverse. Example: S=[123253376]S = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 2 & 5 & 3 \\ 3 & 7 & 6 \end{bmatrix} (R3=R1+R2R_3 = R_1 + R_2).

S=[123253376]S = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 2 & 5 & 3 \\ 3 & 7 & 6 \end{bmatrix} (R3=R1+R2R_3 = R_1 + R_2).

→R2−2R1,  R3−3R1[12310001−3−21001−3−301]→R3−R2[12310001−3−210000−1−11]\xrightarrow{R_2 - 2R_1,\; R_3 - 3R_1}\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc} 1 & 2 & 3 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & -3 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & -3 & -3 & 0 & 1 \end{array}\right]\xrightarrow{R_3 - R_2}\left[\begin{array}{ccc|ccc} 1 & 2 & 3 & 1 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & -3 & -2 & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 0 & -1 & -1 & 1 \end{array}\right]

Row 3 of the left half is (0,0,0)(0, 0, 0): stop — SS has no inverse. This agrees with the determinant test: det⁡S=0\det S = 0.

He changed only the left half. The right half also changes: (0,1)−3(1,0)=(−3,1)(0, 1) - 3(1, 0) = (-3, 1), so the row is (0,−2∣−3,1)(0, -2 \mid -3, 1).

  • Three elementary row operations: swap Ri↔RjR_i \leftrightarrow R_j, scale Ri→kRiR_i \to kR_i (k≠0k \ne 0), replace Ri→Ri+kRjR_i \to R_i + kR_j. Each can be undone.
  • Gauss–Jordan: [A∣I]→[I∣A−1][A \mid I] \to [I \mid A^{-1}] — whatever happens on the left happens on the right.
  • Column by column: a 1 on the diagonal, then zeros above and below.
  • A zero row on the left means the matrix is singular.

Review questions
Why does doing the same operations to II give A−1A^{-1}?

The operations together act like one matrix EE with EA=IEA = I, so E=A−1E = A^{-1}; applied to II they give EI=A−1EI = A^{-1}.

کارەکان پێکەوە وەک یەک EE کار دەکەن کە EA=IEA = I، بۆیە E=A−1E = A^{-1}؛ لەسەر II EI=A−1EI = A^{-1} دەدەن.

Do different choices of steps give different inverses?

No. The path can differ, but a matrix has only one inverse, so every correct path ends at the same A−1A^{-1}.
