A cannot run PHP. If you double-click a .php file, the browser only shows the code as plain text, or it asks you to download the file. PHP code runs on a that has PHP installed. The server runs the code and sends back only HTML.

While you learn, you do not need to rent a server on the Internet. A local web server turns your own computer into a web server, so you can write and test PHP pages at home or in the lab. Local simply means "on this computer". The program we use for this is .

Before a cook opens a restaurant in the bazaar, she practises in her home kitchen and cooks for her family. The home kitchen has the same kind of stove and pots as a restaurant. XAMPP is your home kitchen: it has the same programs as a real web server (Apache, PHP and a database), but only you "eat" there.

A real restaurant serves strangers all day. XAMPP is made for testing on your own computer. Its default settings are not safe enough to put on the Internet for the public.

To run PHP pages you need three things: a web server, PHP itself and (later) a server. Installing and connecting them one by one is hard for a beginner. An all-in-one package installs all of them together, already set up to work with each other. The lecture names two packages for Windows: WAMP and XAMPP. The lab screenshots use a third one, MAMP, on a Mac.

This course uses XAMPP. Everything you learn also works with WAMP or MAMP. Only two things change: the name of the web folder and the number. You will meet both differences in this lecture.

PHP also has a tiny built-in web server for quick tests. In a command window, go to your project folder and type php -S localhost:8000, then open http://localhost:8000/ in the browser. With XAMPP on Windows, click Shell in the Control Panel first, so the php command is found. This server has no database and is only for testing.

is a free, package made by the Apache Friends project. It installs a complete web server on your computer in a few clicks. Because it is , it installs on Windows, Linux and Mac, so the same setup works wherever you study.

The course slide says: "XAMPP stands for Cross-Platform (X), Apache (A), MySQL (M), PHP (P)" and calls it "four programs in one easy installer". Its Quick Check gives the same four-part answer. Two corrections:

The name has five letters. The second P is Perl.
Since 2015 (XAMPP 5.5.30 and 5.6.14), the M is MariaDB, not MySQL. MariaDB is a copy (a "fork") of MySQL made by MySQL's original developers. It works the same way, uses the same SQL and the same PHP code. The Control Panel still names the button "MySQL".

Apache is the web server. It waits for requests from browsers. When a request arrives, it finds the right file. If the file ends in .php, Apache gives it to PHP first, and then sends the result to the browser.

PHP is the language of this course. It runs on the server, builds the page, and sends only the finished HTML to the visitor. The visitor never sees your PHP code. You meet it properly in Introduction to PHP.

The slide says "every web application, however simple or complicated, requires a database". Many do, but not all: a simple page that shows the date needs no database.
It says MySQL is "the world's most popular database management system". MySQL calls itself the world's most popular open-source database. In overall rankings, commercial systems such as Oracle Database are also at the top.
It writes "Hypertext Pre-processor". The official name is PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor: the first P stands for PHP itself (a "recursive" name).

The course's Kurdish notes start the installation part with: to run PHP, we need the Apache server. Apache is the web server inside XAMPP. Its history in short:

The Apache HTTP Server was created in 1995 by the Apache Group, 21 people from around the world who looked after its development.
In 1999 the original members of the Apache Group started the Apache Software Foundation (ASF).

The Kurdish notes say Apache is "the name of a tribe of South America" and that many of its people helped to develop the server. This is not right. The Apache peoples live in the south-western United States (North America). The server was built by the Apache Group; the name only honours the tribes.

The list mixes very old parts with new ones. PHP 8.2 cannot work with eAccelerator "for PHP 5.2.4" or with Zend Optimizer: both were for PHP 5 and are gone. Modern PHP has its own speed-up tool (OPcache) built in.
MySQL 5.2 was never a finished (stable) MySQL version, and XAMPP now ships MariaDB.
OpenSSL 0.9.8e, phpMyAdmin 2.11.1 and SQLite 2.8.15 are from about 2007. Using such old security software would be dangerous.
PHP-Switch, XAMPP Security and ADOdb are old PHP 5-era tools. You will not need them. The Control Panel is now version 3.3.0.
Version numbers change every few months. To see what your XAMPP contains, look at the download page or at phpinfo() (later in this lecture).

On other systems the steps are similar, but the web folder is somewhere else. XAMPP for macOS installs into /Applications/XAMPP, and its web folder is /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs. XAMPP for Linux installs into /opt/lampp (start it with sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start), and its web folder is /opt/lampp/htdocs. MAMP on a Mac (used in the lab screenshots) uses /Applications/MAMP/htdocs.

The table has five columns: Service (a box to install the module as a Windows service), Module (the program's name), PID(s) (the process number Windows gives a running program), Port(s) (the it listens on) and Actions (buttons). The log at the bottom says that the Control Panel works without administrator rights for most things, but changing Windows services needs them. It also shows the installation folder, c:\xampp.

Apache often shows two PIDs, because it runs a main process and a helper process. The lecture's screenshot comes from version 3.2.1 (2013) and the course deck's from version 3.3.0 (2021). The look is almost the same, and so are the steps.

One computer can run many server programs at the same time. Each one listens on its own , a number from 0 to 65535. The browser uses the port to reach the right program. XAMPP's defaults are:

Think of a big government office building. The building has one address, but inside there are many numbered windows (counters). Window 80 serves web pages, window 443 serves secure web pages, and window 3306 serves the database. Your computer's address is localhost, and each port is one numbered window.

In an office, two clerks could share one window. A port can be opened by only one program at a time. If another program already uses port 80, Apache cannot start.

The port in the URL must match the port your web server listens on. XAMPP's Apache uses port 80, so you can leave it out: http://localhost/. The most common problem is that Apache does not start and the log says that port 80 (or 443) is "in use" or "blocked". Another program is already using that port, for example Microsoft's web server or another web server. Click Netstat to see which program it is. You have two choices:

The Kurdish notes also list backup as an IDE feature ("it stores all your work so you can come back to it later"). An IDE saves your files and some IDEs keep a short local history, but that is not a real backup: if the disk breaks, the work is lost. Keep copies elsewhere, for example on a USB stick, in the cloud or with Git.

Tick Copy files from Sources Folder to another location only when your Sources Folder is outside the web folder (for example in Documents). Then NetBeans copies the files into htdocs (the Copy to Folder) so that Apache can show them; Copy files on project open repeats the copy each time you open the project. If you create the project inside htdocs, as above, no copy is needed.

Corrections to the Lab 1 sheetڕاستکردنەوەکان بۆ پەڕەی تاقیگەی ١

The sheet says "click on new file → new project". The menu is File → New Project….
It says the PHP version is the one "you want to use". In fact it is only for hints: it tells the editor which PHP features to accept. The PHP that really runs is the one in XAMPP. PHP 5.6 is no longer supported: choose PHP 8.
It says the encoding "is related to the language type you want to use for the interface". Default Encoding is the of your source files, the way letters are saved as numbers. Keep UTF-8: it can store Kurdish, Arabic, English and every other script.
Its list jumps to "3. on the browser, PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR PORT NUMBER FROM 8888 TO 81". The words "on the browser" finish item 2 ("the address you run your project on the browser"); the real item 3 is the copy option. And 81 is not a rule for everyone: it was the port of the lab computers' Apache. Use the port your own server listens on.
For the last step the text says "click on finish", while the screenshot marks Next. Both work: Next only shows one more optional step (Composer).
