Technical English describes what things are and what they do. These are general facts, so the normal tense is the present simple: The CPU processes data. A scanner converts paper documents into digital files.

Choose a precise verb. Instead of The printer does copies, write The printer makes copies or prints copies. Useful verbs of function: store, process, convert, display, send, receive, control, connect, measure, detect.

Data is or data are? In everyday and most technical writing, data takes a singular verb: The data is stored in the cloud. Scientific writing often keeps the Latin plural: The data are shown in Table 2. Choose one style and use it consistently.

Device, machine, computer, PC. Device is the normal word for phones, tablets and peripherals. Machine sounds physical or older (a cash machine, a washing machine). PC usually means a Windows desktop or laptop, although it literally means any personal computer.

IT, ICT, computer science. IT is the use of computers to store, send and process information in business and daily life. ICT (information and communication technology) is common in schools. Computer science is the academic study of computation, algorithms and programming.
