Comparing is everywhere: the pass mark is 50 or more, the speed limit is 100 km/h or less, and a phone warns you when the battery is below 20 %. In a program you write if mark >= 50. This lesson gives the exact rules behind every comparison of real numbers.

لە دەنووسیت if mark >= 50.

Picture the real numbers on the number line. To the left is smaller, to the right is larger. So −3<2-3<2 because −3 lies to the left of 2, and −7<−2-7<-2 because −7 lies further left. Behind the picture is one exact idea: a<ba<b means that b−ab-a is a positive number.

Exactly one of threeتەنها یەکێک لە سێ

Definition

The rule that for any two real numbers a and b exactly one is true: a<ba<b, a=ba=b or a>ba>b.

ئەو یاسایەی کە بۆ هەر دوو a و b تەنها یەکێک لەمانە ڕاستە: a<ba<b، a=ba=b یان a>ba>b.

For all a,b∈R:a<b  or  a=b  or  a>b(exactly one is true)\text{For all } a,b\in\mathbb{R}:\quad a<b\ \ \text{or}\ \ a=b\ \ \text{or}\ \ a>b\quad(\text{exactly one is true})

This is the first rule of order in ℝ. Two different numbers can always be compared, and a comparison can never be true in two ways at once. The slide states it twice (rule 1 of the order relation and rule 5 of the inequality rules); it is one rule.

The course example: for 2 and −1 we see that 2>−12>-1, 2≮−12\not<-1 and 2≠−12\ne-1. One statement is true and the other two are false.

Why exactly one? Remember the meaning of “less than” from the first screen: a<ba<b exactly when b−ab-a is positive. The difference b−ab-a is positive, zero or negative, and only one of these. Positive gives a<ba<b, zero gives a=ba=b, negative gives a>ba>b.

موجەب a<ba<b دەدات، سفر a=ba=b و سالب a>ba>b.

Plays 0:00-3:41: the four signs (0:19-2:00), negative numbers (2:20) and chains like 2 < x < 5 (2:57). The number-line part after 3:41 belongs to the Intervals lesson.

Chains: a<b<ca<b<cزنجیرە: a<b<ca<b<c

Two comparisons are often written as one chain:

a<b<c ⟺ a<b and b<ca≤b<c ⟺ a≤b and b<c\begin{aligned}a<b<c\ &\Longleftrightarrow\ a<b\ \text{and}\ b<c\\ a\le b<c\ &\Longleftrightarrow\ a\le b\ \text{and}\ b<c\end{aligned}

A chain is true only when both comparisons are true. So 2<5<42<5<4 is false, because 5<45<4 is false, even though 2<52<5 is true.

Chains describe a stretch of the number line. −1<x≤3-1<x\le3 means: x is bigger than −1 and at most 3. Here −1 is left out and 3 is included. You will write such stretches as intervals in the next lesson.

Adding the same number to both sides

a<b ⟹ a+c<b+c(for every real c)a<b\ \Longrightarrow\ a+c<b+c\qquad(\text{for every real } c)

Adding (or subtracting) the same number on both sides never changes the direction. The slide states it for >> as well: a>b⇒a+c>b+ca>b\Rightarrow a+c>b+c.

سلایدەکە بۆ >>ـیش دەیڵێت: a>b⇒a+c>b+ca>b\Rightarrow a+c>b+c.

Why? The gap between the two numbers stays the same: (b+c)−(a+c)=b−a(b+c)-(a+c)=b-a, which is still positive. On the number line both points slide by the same distance, so the left one stays on the left.

بۆشایی نێوان دوو ژمارەکە وەک خۆی دەمێنێتەوە: (b+c)−(a+c)=b−a(b+c)-(a+c)=b-a، کە هێشتا .

Two brothers' ages

Soran is 12 and his brother Rezan is 15, so Soran is younger. In 10 years they will be 22 and 25: Soran is still younger, by the same 3 years. Adding the same amount to both never changes who is ahead.

Where the analogy stops working

Ages only grow. The rule also works when c is negative, which is like going back in time: 10 years ago they were 2 and 5.

This is how simple inequalities are solved: x−3<5x-3<5 → add 3 to both sides → x<8x<8.

Multiplying by a positive number

a<b and c>0 ⟹ a⋅c<b⋅ca<b\ \text{and}\ c>0\ \Longrightarrow\ a\cdot c<b\cdot c

Multiplying both sides by the same positive number keeps the direction. The slide's version with >>: a>ba>b and c>0c>0 give a⋅c>b⋅ca\cdot c>b\cdot c.

وەشانەکەی سلایدەکە بە >>: a>ba>b و c>0c>0 دەبنە a⋅c>b⋅ca\cdot c>b\cdot c.

The course example: 2>12>1 and c=10c=10, so 2⋅10>1⋅102\cdot10>1\cdot10, that is 20>1020>10.

Why? bc−ac=(b−a) cbc-ac=(b-a)\,c. Both b−ab-a and c are positive, and a positive times a positive is positive, so ac<bcac<bc. Dividing by a positive c is the same as multiplying by 1c\tfrac1c, which is also positive, so division keeps the direction too: 3x<6⇒x<23x<6\Rightarrow x<2.

bc−ac=(b−a) cbc-ac=(b-a)\,c. b−ab-a

Multiplying by a negative number reverses the sign

a<b and c<0 ⟹ a⋅c>b⋅ca<b\ \text{and}\ c<0\ \Longrightarrow\ a\cdot c>b\cdot c

This is the one rule that makes inequalities different from equations: multiplying both sides by a negative number turns the sign around.

Example: 2<52<5 and c=−3c=-3: 2⋅(−3)=−62\cdot(-3)=-6 and 5⋅(−3)=−155\cdot(-3)=-15, and −6>−15-6>-15. Why? Now (b−a) c(b-a)\,c is a positive times a negative, which is negative, so bc<acbc<ac. Watch the picture: multiplying by −1 turns the number line half a turn around 0, so the left point ends up on the right.

نموونە: 2<52<5 و c=−3c=-3: 2⋅(−3)=−62\cdot(-3)=-6 و 5⋅(−3)=−155\cdot(-3)=-15، هەروەها −6>−15-6>-15. ئێستا (b−a) c(b-a)\,c لێکدانی لە ، کە سالبە، بۆیە bc<acbc<ac.

Animation: the points a = 2 and b = 5 on a number line, with 2 < 5. The number line is multiplied by −1: a copy of it turns about 0 through 45°, 90° and 135° until it lies on the line again after half a turn. Now the points are at −a = −2 and −b = −5, and b is on the left of a: −5 < −2. The last frame says: 2 < 5 ⇒ −2 > −5; multiplying (or dividing) by a negative number reverses the inequality sign; a < b ⇒ −a > −b.

Dividing by a negative number also reverses the sign, because it is multiplying by 1c\tfrac1c, which is negative too. Example: −2x<6-2x<6 → divide by −2 → x>−3x>-3.

Debts

Having 2 dinars is less than having 5 dinars. Now turn both into debts: owing 2 dinars (−2-2) is better than owing 5 dinars (−5-5). The minus sign turned the order around.

Two number lines. Top, 0 to 3: an arrow from 2 to 1/2 and an arrow from 3 to 1/3; the bigger number 3 lands closer to 0, so 2 < 3 ⇒ 1/2 > 1/3. Reciprocals reverse the order of two numbers with the same sign.

Why? 1a−1b=b−aab\frac1a-\frac1b=\frac{b-a}{ab}. The top b−ab-a is positive. If a and b have the same sign, ab>0ab>0, the whole fraction is positive and 1a>1b\frac1a>\frac1b (rules 6 and 8). If they have different signs, ab<0ab<0, and the order stays (rule 7). Zero has no reciprocal, so these rules never use 0.

1a−1b=b−aab\frac1a-\frac1b=\frac{b-a}{ab}. b−ab-a موجەبە.

Sharing a cake

Share one cake between 2 friends and each gets 12\tfrac12; share it between 3 and each gets 13\tfrac13. More people (3>23>2) means a smaller piece (13<12\tfrac13<\tfrac12). That is rule 6.

Why? b2−a2=(b−a)(b+a)b^2-a^2=(b-a)(b+a), and b−a>0b-a>0. For two positive numbers b+a>0b+a>0, so b2>a2b^2>a^2: squaring keeps the order (rule 10). For two negative numbers b+a<0b+a<0, so b2<a2b^2<a^2: squaring reverses it (rule 9). On the number line, squaring measures how far a number is from 0, and for negatives the one further left is further from 0.

b2−a2=(b−a)(b+a)b^2-a^2=(b-a)(b+a) و b−a>0b-a>0. بۆ دوو b+a>0b+a>0، بۆیە b2>a2b^2>a^2: دووجاکردن ڕیزبەندی دەهێڵێتەوە (یاسای ⁦10⁩). بۆ دوو b+a<0b+a<0، بۆیە b2<a2b^2<a^2: دووجاکردن پێچەوانەی دەکاتەوە (یاسای ⁦9⁩).

In (c) the products b(d−c)b(d-c) and c(b−a)c(b-a) are positive because every factor is positive: this is exactly where the rule needs b>0b>0 and c>0c>0. Each line ends with >0>0, so by the meaning of “less than” we get a<ca<c, a+c<b+da+c<b+d and ac<bdac<bd.

هەر دێڕێک بە >0>0 کۆتایی دێت، کەواتە بەپێی واتای «بچووکترە لە» a<ca<c، a+c<b+da+c<b+d و ac<bdac<bd دەردەچن.

Summary and review

  • a<ba<b means a lies to the left of b, that is b−a>0b-a>0. For real numbers exactly one of a<ba<b, a=ba=b, a>ba>b holds.
  • Order passes along chains: a<ba<b and b<cb<c give a<ca<c. A chain a<b<ca<b<c means both parts at once.
  • Adding, subtracting, and multiplying or dividing by a positive number keep the sign.
  • Multiplying or dividing by a negative number reverses the sign.
  • Same-direction inequalities can be added; between positive numbers they can also be multiplied.
  • Reciprocals reverse the order of two numbers with the same sign; squares reverse it for two negatives and keep it for two positives.
  • a<ba<b واتە a لە لای چەپی bـیە، واتە b−a>0b-a>0. بۆ ڕێک یەکێک لە a<ba<b، a=ba=b، a>ba>b ڕاستە.
  • ڕیزبەندی بە زنجیرەدا دەگوازرێتەوە: a<ba<b و b<cb<c دەبنە a<ca<c.
Review questions
Why does multiplying by a negative number flip the sign?

Because bc−ac=(b−a)cbc-ac=(b-a)c is a positive number times a negative number, which is negative, so bc<acbc<ac.

چونکە bc−ac=(b−a)cbc-ac=(b-a)c لێکدانی لە ، کە سالبە، بۆیە bc<acbc<ac.

Is 5≤55\le5 true?

Yes: ≤\le means “less than or equal”, and 5=55=5.

When does taking reciprocals not reverse the order?

When one number is negative and the other positive (rule 7): −2<3-2<3 and −12<13-\tfrac12<\tfrac13.

What does a≤b<ca\le b<c mean?a≤b<ca\le b<c

a≤ba\le b and b<cb<c, both at the same time.

a≤ba\le b
