Static and dynamic web pages showed the first way to sort websites, by how their pages are made. A is a file that the server sends exactly as it is stored: every visitor sees the same thing, and only its owner can change it by editing the file. A is built or changed by a program, so it can show different information at different times and to different visitors, and visitors can add to it.

A page can be dynamic in two places:

- On the server (). A program on the web server — written in PHP, ASP.NET, Python, Java, Ruby, Perl or another server-side language — decides how to put the page together for each request, often with data from a database, and sends finished HTML (PHP on the server).
- In the browser (). that came with the page runs on the visitor's computer and changes the page after it has arrived. It works on the , the browser's tree of objects for the loaded page: change the tree, and the page on the screen changes at once.

The two usually work together: PHP builds the page, and JavaScript makes it react while you use it. Which languages run where is explained in Server-side and client-side languages.

A dynamic site can change one part of a page without loading the whole page again: new chat messages appear, a search box suggests words as you type, a "cakes left today" number updates. The technique is called : JavaScript asks the server for data in the background and puts the answer into the DOM. It started with an object called XMLHttpRequest; today the fetch() function does the job, and the data usually travels as JSON.

- Customised content and look for each visitor (your name, your language, your basket).
- Data that is always up to date and reliable, because it comes straight from the database.
- Content made on demand from what the user types (a search, a form).
- Interaction: users log in, comment, order and upload.

The second way to sort websites is by their purpose and content. The lecture lists ten kinds. Real sites often mix them (a shop with a blog), but the purpose decides most of the planning.

Search engines are among the most visited websites in the world. Some keep a very simple home page with one service — a search box. Others have a look: the home page pushes many services at the visitor, such as e-mail, news and weather. (How a search engine finds, indexes and ranks pages is explained in How Search Engines Work.)

Information websites exist to give information: timetables, TV guides, reference material, sports results, weather and stock prices. Personal websites are built by one person, mostly about themselves or a hobby; that person decides alone what goes online.

An site is a shop on the Internet: its purpose is to reach the online market and sell and buy products or services. It needs one or more : a service, usually run by a bank or a card company, that checks the customer's card or e-wallet and moves the money. The shop's own pages never need to store the card number.

Educational sites are built by universities, schools and learning organisations to inform people about education and their courses; their users are mostly their own students and teachers. CêIT is one.

An collects a person's work online — pictures, projects, writing, links — as a record of learning that gives real evidence of what they achieved. There are three kinds: developmental (work in progress, to see growth), reflective (with notes on what was learned) and showcase or representational (only the best work, for teachers or employers). Social networks are Web 2.0 sites: their content comes from their users (How the Web changed: Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0). There are so many, and they are so popular, that they are counted as a kind of their own: Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn today.
Web 2.0ـن: ناوەڕۆکەکەیان لە دێت (وێب چۆن گۆڕا: Web 1.0، Web 2.0 و Web 3.0). ئەوەندە زۆر و بەناوبانگن کە وەک جۆرێکی سەربەخۆ دەژمێردرێن: ئەمڕۆ Facebook، Instagram و LinkedIn.
Small business sites belong to one person or a small group running a business: a shop, a workshop, a tea house. Their budget is bigger than a personal site's but smaller than a large company's. Large business sites belong to big organisations with bigger budgets; a part of the staff works only on running and updating the site.
