Back to Hana's bakery. Customers order bread on their phones, and every order must appear on the tablet in the bakery. When a customer buys a new phone, her order history must still be there. When Hana changes a price, every customer must see the new price at once.

None of this can live on one phone. The app needs a back end: computers somewhere else that keep the shared data and do the shared work. Today that back end usually runs in the cloud.

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing resources over the internet ("the cloud"): storage, processing power, databases, networking, analytics, artificial intelligence and ready-made software. You use them on demand and pay for what you use. The real computers sit in a 's data centres.

Many families in Kurdistan take a few amperes from the neighbourhood generator and pay each month for what they use, instead of buying a big generator. Cloud computing is the same idea: you rent storage and processing from a provider instead of buying and running your own servers.

Unlike electricity, your data is private: you must trust the provider with it. And without the internet you cannot reach the cloud.

Using for mobile : the heavy work and the stay on cloud , and the phone shows the results. Users can reach the same data from any device and any place.

Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is the method of using cloud technology to deliver mobile apps. Modern customers expect to reach a company's website and apps remotely, from anywhere and at any time, and the cloud makes that possible.

- Nothing is lost with the phone. Photos and messages backed up in the cloud survive a broken or lost phone.
- Shared work in one place. Orders, chats and scores from many users meet on the server.

Why not do all this on the phone? Because the data must be shared, and because the phone cannot be trusted: anyone can change an app on their own phone, so prices, payments and rules must be checked on a server.

A cloud service that gives an a ready-made : a , , file storage, and more, used through an instead of your own . Firebase is a BaaS.

A Backend-as-a-Service gives an app ready-made back-end services: a database, sign-in, file storage, notifications and more. The app talks to them through an , a library added to the app, so you do not write or run a server for these common jobs. Firebase, from Google, is a BaaS app development platform. Supabase, an open-source service built on the PostgreSQL database, is another example.

The lecture shows Firebase's own picture of the difference. Traditionally, client apps call an HTTP API on your servers, and your servers talk to the database and the cloud. With Firebase, client apps use the Firebase SDK and talk to Firebase directly. The picture is called "Firebase and Flutter architecture", but it is the same for any client app: Android, iOS, web or Flutter.

Google Analytics for Firebase is a free app measurement solution. It gives insight into how people use an app and how engaged they are. It shows data about user behaviour in iOS and Android apps (and today also web, Flutter, Unity and C++ apps), so the team can make better decisions about the product and about marketing.

Traditionally the client app calls an HTTP API on servers you build and run, and those servers use the database and other cloud services. With Firebase the client app uses the Firebase SDK and talks to Firebase's services directly, so you do not write the API or run the servers. The name says "Flutter", but the picture is the same for any client app: Android, iOS, web or Flutter.
