Why we need intervals

Solve x+2=5x+2=5 and you get one number: 3. Now solve x+2>5x+2>5. Every number bigger than 3 works: 3.1, 4, 10, 1000, even 3.0001. There are infinitely many, so we cannot list them. Instead we name the whole piece of the at once.

An interval has no gaps. Between any two of its numbers, every real number in between is in it too. That is why we write the answers of most as intervals.

A stretch of road

Think of the road from Erbil to Shaqlawa. “Somewhere on this road” means every point of it, not only the villages you can name. Whether the two cities themselves count is a separate question — that is exactly what the brackets of an interval answer.

Where the analogy stops working

A road has two ends and a width, and you can only walk so far. An interval is a piece of a line with no width, it contains infinitely many numbers, and with ∞\infty it can go on for ever in one direction.

Open, closed and half-open intervals

The lecture defines intervals for two real numbers aa and bb with a<ba<b. These two numbers are the ends of the interval. The only question is whether each end is included.

(a,b)={x∣a<x<b}[a,b]={x∣a≤x≤b}[a,b)={x∣a≤x<b}(a,b]={x∣a<x≤b}\begin{aligned} (a,b) &= \{x \mid a<x<b\} \\ [a,b] &= \{x \mid a\le x\le b\} \\ [a,b) &= \{x \mid a\le x<b\} \\ (a,b] &= \{x \mid a<x\le b\} \end{aligned}

Read {x∣a<x<b}\{x \mid a<x<b\} as “all x such that x is between a and b”. A round bracket matches a strict sign (<< or >>); a square bracket matches a sign with “or equal” (≤\le or ≥\ge).

{x∣a<x<b}\{x \mid a<x<b\} بەم شێوەیە بخوێنەرەوە: «هەموو xـێک کە لە نێوان a و bدایە».

One answer, three ways to write itیەک وەڵام، سێ شێوەی نووسین

Every interval can be written as an inequality, in interval notation and as a picture on the number line. You need to move between them in every direction. Here are all nine kinds side by side.

Unbounded rows: x > a is (a, ∞); x ≥ a is [a, ∞); x < b is (−∞, b); x ≤ b is (−∞, b]; x ∈ ℝ is (−∞, ∞). Each picture shows the dots and the shading with arrows for the infinite sides. ڕیزە سنووردارەکان: a < x < b دەکاتە (a, b)؛ a ≤ x ≤ b دەکاتە [a, b]؛ a ≤ x < b دەکاتە [a, b)؛ a < x ≤ b دەکاتە (a, b]. ڕیزە بێسنوورەکان: x > a دەکاتە (a, ∞)؛ x ≥ a دەکاتە [a, ∞)؛ x < b دەکاتە (−∞, b)؛ x ≤ b دەکاتە (−∞, b]؛ x ∈ ℝ دەکاتە (−∞, ∞).

Answers in two pieces: the union ∪\cupوەڵامی دوو پارچەیی: یەکگرتن ∪\cup

Some answers are two separate pieces. In Inequalities with fractions the answer of 1x−2>2x+3\frac{1}{x-2}>\frac{2}{x+3} is: x<−3x<-3 or 2<x<72<x<7. We join the pieces with the union sign ∪\cup:

∪\cup means “or”: a number is in the union when it is in at least one of the pieces. −5-5 is in it (first piece), 4 is in it (second piece), 0 is not (in neither piece). This is the same union you meet for sets in Set operations.

The ]a,b[]a,b[ notationنووسینی ]a,b[]a,b[

Some books and teachers show a left-out end with a bracket that turns away from the interval: ]a,b[]a,b[ means (a,b)(a,b) and [a,b[[a,b[ means [a,b)[a,b). The style was introduced by the French Bourbaki group of mathematicians and is common in France and other European countries; the ISO standard for mathematical signs lists both styles. You will also meet it in students' notes, for example x∈ ]−∞,−12[ ∪ ]15,+∞[x\in\,]-\infty,-\tfrac12[\,\cup\,]\tfrac15,+\infty[.

هەندێک کتێب و مامۆستا سنوورێکی دەرەوە بە کەوانەیەک پیشان دەدەن کە ڕووی لە دەرەوەی : ]a,b[]a,b[ واتە (a,b)(a,b) و [a,b[[a,b[ واتە [a,b)[a,b).

Summary

  • An is one unbroken piece of the number line; it contains infinitely many numbers.
  • Square bracket = filled dot = ≤\le or ≥\ge = included. Round bracket = open dot = << or >> = left out.
  • (a,b)(a,b) open, [a,b][a,b] closed, [a,b)[a,b) and (a,b](a,b] half-open.
  • ∞\infty and −∞-\infty are not numbers: they always get a round bracket.
  • Two pieces are joined with ∪\cup (“or”); write the smaller number first.
  • ]a,b[]a,b[ is another way to write (a,b)(a,b).
  • (a,b)(a,b) کراوە، [a,b][a,b] داخراو، [a,b)[a,b) و (a,b](a,b] نیوەکراوە.
  • ]a,b[]a,b[ شێوەیەکی ترە بۆ نووسینی (a,b)(a,b).
Review questions
What is the difference between [1,4][1,4] and (1,4)(1,4)?

[1,4][1,4] contains 1 and 4; (1,4)(1,4) contains every number between them but not 1 and 4 themselves.

Why is [2,∞][2,\infty] wrong?بۆچی [2,∞][2,\infty] هەڵەیە؟

∞\infty is not a number, so it cannot be included. Write [2,∞)[2,\infty).
