Three rules every probability must obey

You have met three ways to get a probability: count equally likely outcomes, repeat an experiment and use the relative frequency, or make a careful personal judgement (Three ways to get a probability). They give different numbers for different situations, but they all behave the same way. In 1933 the mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov wrote down the few rules that every probability must follow. These rules are called the axioms of probability.

A probability is a function P: it takes an event A (a subset of the sample space Ω\Omega) and gives back a number P(A)P(A). The axioms say which numbers are allowed. Everything else you will use (the complement rule, the addition rule, conditional probability) is proved from them.

Before a match, everyone accepts a few rules: the ball must cross the whole line to be a goal, a team has 11 players. Nobody proves these rules; they are agreed. Tactics, results and league tables then follow from them. Axioms are the agreed rules of probability; theorems are what follows.

The three axioms

Is this a valid probability model?

The axioms let you test any assignment of probabilities. For a finite sample space it is enough to check two things: every outcome gets a number ≥0\ge 0, and the numbers add up to 1. Additivity then gives every event's probability.

  1. Complement rule (theorem 4)

    A and AcA^c do not overlap and together make Ω\Omega. By additivity and normalization: P(A)+P(Ac)=P(Ω)=1P(A) + P(A^c) = P(\Omega) = 1, so P(Ac)=1−P(A)P(A^c) = 1 - P(A).

P(A)+P(Ac)=P(Ω)=1P(A) + P(A^c) = P(\Omega) = 1، بۆیە P(Ac)=1−P(A)P(A^c) = 1 - P(A).

  2. The impossible event (theorem 3)

    The empty set is the complement of Ω\Omega: ∅=Ωc\varnothing = \Omega^c. So P(∅)=1−P(Ω)=1−1=0P(\varnothing) = 1 - P(\Omega) = 1 - 1 = 0.

    Ω\Omegaـیە: ∅=Ωc\varnothing = \Omega^c. P(∅)=1−P(Ω)=1−1=0P(\varnothing) = 1 - P(\Omega) = 1 - 1 = 0.

  3. Never above 1 (theorem 2)

    P(A)=1−P(Ac)P(A) = 1 - P(A^c) and P(Ac)≥0P(A^c) \ge 0 by axiom 1, so P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1. With axiom 1 again, 0≤P(A)≤10 \le P(A) \le 1.

    P(A)=1−P(Ac)P(A) = 1 - P(A^c) و بە 1 P(Ac)≥0P(A^c) \ge 0، بۆیە P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1. 0≤P(A)≤10 \le P(A) \le 1.

  4. Splitting an event (theorem 7), then theorem 1

    A∩BA \cap B and A∩BcA \cap B^c do not overlap and together make A, so additivity gives P(A)=P(A∩B)+P(A∩Bc)P(A) = P(A \cap B) + P(A \cap B^c). If A1⊂A2A_1 \subset A_2, use it with A=A2A = A_2, B=A1B = A_1: P(A2)=P(A1)+P(A2∩A1c)≥P(A1)P(A_2) = P(A_1) + P(A_2 \cap A_1^c) \ge P(A_1).

    A∩BA \cap B و A∩BcA \cap B^c یەکتر نابڕن و پێکەوە A پێک دەهێنن، بۆیە کۆکراوەیی دەدات P(A)=P(A∩B)+P(A∩Bc)P(A) = P(A \cap B) + P(A \cap B^c). گەر A1⊂A2A_1 \subset A_2، بە A=A2A = A_2، B=A1B = A_1 بەکاری بهێنە: P(A2)=P(A1)+P(A2∩A1c)≥P(A1)P(A_2) = P(A_1) + P(A_2 \cap A_1^c) \ge P(A_1).

The rolls do not affect each other (they are independent), which is why the counts multiply (545^4, 646^4). Independence is explained in Conditional Probability and Independence.

  • Three axioms: P(A)≥0P(A) \ge 0; for mutually exclusive events probabilities add; P(Ω)=1P(\Omega) = 1.
  • P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1 is a theorem, not an axiom.
  • Proved from them: P(∅)=0P(\varnothing) = 0, A1⊂A2⇒P(A1)≤P(A2)A_1 \subset A_2 \Rightarrow P(A_1) \le P(A_2), P(A)=P(A∩B)+P(A∩Bc)P(A) = P(A \cap B) + P(A \cap B^c).
  • Complement rule P(A′)=1−P(A)P(A') = 1 - P(A); A′A', AcA^c and Aˉ\bar{A} are the same event.

Why is P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1 not needed as an axiom?بۆچی P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1 وەک بەڵگەنەویست پێویست نییە؟

Because P(A)=1−P(Ac)P(A) = 1 - P(A^c) and P(Ac)≥0P(A^c) \ge 0, so P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1 follows.

P(A)=1−P(Ac)P(A) = 1 - P(A^c) و P(Ac)≥0P(A^c) \ge 0، بۆیە P(A)≤1P(A) \le 1 لێیەوە دێت.
