Stretching, Compressing and Reflecting Graphs

How multiplying a function by a constant, or its input by a constant, stretches or compresses its graph vertically or horizontally, and how a minus sign reflects it across an axis: c f(x)c\,f(x), f(cx)f(cx), f(x/c)f(x/c) (a horizontal stretch, corrected), −f(x)-f(x) and f(−x)f(-x), with the 17 examples of the notes worked and drawn.

Stretch, compress, flip

Shifts slide a graph without changing its shape. This lesson changes the shape. To scale the graph of y=f(x)y=f(x) is to stretch it or compress it, vertically or horizontally. With a minus sign you can also reflect it, as in a mirror, across the x-axis or the y-axis.

Definition

Making a graph taller or shorter (vertical) or wider or narrower (horizontal) by a factor c: a or a .

There are again two places to put the number c: outside f, which changes the outputs (vertical), or inside f, which changes the inputs (horizontal). And again the inside works the other way round. In this lesson c>1c>1 unless we say otherwise.

Vertical stretch and compression: c f(x)c\,f(x)درێژکردنەوە و پەستاندنی ستوونی: c f(x)c\,f(x)

y=c f(x),y=1c f(x)(c>1)y=c\,f(x),\qquad y=\tfrac1c\,f(x)\qquad (c>1)

c f(x)c\,f(x) stretches the graph vertically by the factor c, and 1c f(x)\tfrac1c\,f(x) compresses it vertically by c. Multiplying the output by c multiplies every height by c: each point (x,y)(x,y) moves to (x,cy)(x,cy). Points on the x-axis (height 0) do not move. Dividing by c makes every height c times smaller.

Watching a parabola stretch and compress

Examples 12 and 13 of the notes do the same to the parabola: y=2x2y=2x^2 doubles every height, so the U becomes narrower; y=12x2y=\tfrac12x^2 halves every height, so it becomes wider. The vertex (0,0)(0,0) stays where it is, because c⋅0=0c\cdot0=0.

Animation. The dashed parabola y = x² stays in place while a teal parabola y = c·x² changes: c = 2 and c = 3 make it narrower (vertical stretch), c = ½ and c = ⅓ make it wider (vertical compression). Orange dots at x = 1 and x = 2 show the heights c and 4c. The last frame shows y = 3x², y = x² and y = ⅓x² together.

Everyday analogy

Pull a photo taller on your phone with two fingers, only up and down: every face gets longer, but nothing moves left or right. That is a vertical stretch. Squeezing it down is a vertical compression.

Where the analogy stops working

A photo has edges; a graph goes on forever, and the stretch is measured from the x-axis, not from the middle of the picture.

Horizontal compression and stretch: f(cx)f(cx) and f(x/c)f(x/c)پەستاندن و درێژکردنەوەی ئاسۆیی: f(cx)f(cx) و f(x/c)f(x/c)

y=f(cx),y=f ⁣(xc)(c>1)y=f(cx),\qquad y=f\!\left(\tfrac xc\right)\qquad (c>1)

f(cx)f(cx) compresses the graph horizontally by c, and f(xc)f(\tfrac xc) stretches it horizontally by c. Now the input is changed. f(cx)f(cx) reaches every value c times sooner: the value that f has at 9, f(3x)f(3x) already has at 3. Each point (x,y)(x,y) moves to (x/c, y)(x/c,\,y), closer to the y-axis. f(x/c)f(x/c) does the opposite: each point moves to (cx, y)(cx,\,y), c times further out.

Examples 3 and 4: 3x\sqrt{3x} and x/3\sqrt{x/3}نموونەی 3 و 4: 3x\sqrt{3x} و x/3\sqrt{x/3}

Example 3 y=3xy=\sqrt{3x}: horizontal compression by 3. Example 4 y=x/3y=\sqrt{x/3}: horizontal stretch by 3. Both keep the domain [0,∞)[0,\infty) and the range [0,∞)[0,\infty). For this particular function there is a shortcut: 3x=3 x≈1.73x\sqrt{3x}=\sqrt3\,\sqrt x\approx1.73\sqrt x, so squeezing sideways by 3 looks the same as stretching upwards by 3\sqrt3. Most functions have no such shortcut.

The dashed curve y = √x reaches height 2 at x = 4. y = √(3x) (teal) reaches the same height at x = 4/3, shown by an arrow pointing left; y = √(x/3) (orange) reaches it at x = 12, shown by an arrow pointing right.

A reflection in the x-axis flips the range; a reflection in the y-axis flips the domain. −x\sqrt{-x} needs −x≥0-x\ge0, that is x≤0x\le0.

6) y=−xy=\sqrt{-x}across the y-axisبەرامبەر y(−∞,0](-\infty,0][0,∞)[0,\infty)

This links back to even and odd functions: an even function is unchanged by f(−x)f(-x) (the y-axis mirror), and for an odd function the two mirrors give the same graph, f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x)=-f(x); doing both mirrors one after the other is the half turn about the origin.

Notice 14 and 15: for the parabola a horizontal change can be rewritten as a vertical one, because (2x)2=4x2(2x)^2=4x^2 and (x2)2=x24(\tfrac x2)^2=\tfrac{x^2}{4}. Squeezing the parabola sideways by 2 makes it as narrow as pulling it up by 4.

Combining stretches, reflections and shifts

Real formulas mix everything, for example y=−2∣x+1∣+3y=-2|x+1|+3. For a formula of the form y=a f(bx+h)+ky=a\,f(bx+h)+k, work in this order: (1) horizontal shift (from h), (2) horizontal stretch, compression or reflection (from b), (3) vertical stretch, compression or reflection (from a), (4) vertical shift (from k). Outside f this is the order of arithmetic: multiply, then add. Inside f it is the reverse of how you compute a value, because changes to the input work the other way round.

بۆ فۆرمولەیەک بە شێوەی y=a f(bx+h)+ky=a\,f(bx+h)+k بەم ڕیزبەندییە کار بکە: ⁦(1)⁩ ئاسۆیی (لە hـەوە)، ⁦(2)⁩ ، یان ئاسۆیی (لە bـەوە)، ⁦(3)⁩ ، یان ستوونی (لە aـەوە)، ⁦(4)⁩ ستوونی (لە kـەوە).

  1. ∣x+1∣|x+1|: the V of ∣x∣|x| moves 1 left; the vertex is at (−1,0)(-1,0).

  2. 2∣x+1∣2|x+1|: every height doubles; the vertex stays at (−1,0)(-1,0) because its height is 0.

  3. −2∣x+1∣-2|x+1|: reflection across the x-axis; the V now opens downwards.

  4. −2∣x+1∣+3-2|x+1|+3: everything moves 3 up; the vertex ends at (−1,3)(-1,3), the highest point of the graph.

Why is ∣2x∣|2x| the same graph as 2∣x∣2|x|?

Because ∣2x∣=∣2∣⋅∣x∣=2∣x∣|2x|=|2|\cdot|x|=2|x| for every x.
