Solve ∣x∣=r|x| = r, ∣x∣<r|x| < r and ∣x∣>r|x| > r (and the ≤\le, ≥\ge forms) by reading absolute value as distance: one interval inside, two rays outside, two points on the edge. The course's examples ∣x−3∣<2|x - 3| < 2, ∣2x+3∣>5|2x + 3| > 5, ∣3x−4∣<2|3x - 4| < 2, ∣x−1∣<6|x - 1| < 6, ∣2x−3∣=7|2x - 3| = 7 and 19<x2<14\tfrac19 < x^2 < \tfrac14, with a homework answer that lost its negative half.

The school bus

A village school stands at kilometre 3 of a straight road. The bus collects every pupil who lives less than 2 km from the school, that is from kilometre 1 to kilometre 5: ∣x−3∣<2|x - 3| < 2. Pupils who live more than 2 km away, ∣x−3∣>2|x - 3| > 2, take a taxi instead.

Where the analogy stops working

A road, like the number line, has only two directions. In a real town “less than 2 km from the school” is a whole disc around it, not a piece of a line.

The theorem: three cases

Let rr be a positive real number (r∈R+r \in \mathbb{R}^+) and xx any real number. The course states this theorem without proof:

با rr موجەب بێت (r∈R+r \in \mathbb{R}^+) و xx هەر بێت.

1.∣x∣=r  ⟺  x=±r2.∣x∣<r  ⟺  −r<x<r3.∣x∣>r  ⟺  x<−r  or  x>r\begin{aligned} &1.\quad |x| = r \iff x = \pm r \\ &2.\quad |x| < r \iff -r < x < r \\ &3.\quad |x| > r \iff x < -r \ \text{ or } \ x > r \end{aligned}

Why it is true (the proof the course leaves out): ∣x∣|x| is the distance from xx to 0. A distance of exactly rr gives the two points ±r\pm r. A distance less than rr keeps xx between −r-r and rr. A distance more than rr puts xx beyond −r-r on the left or beyond rr on the right.

Solving ∣ax+b∣<r|ax + b| < r: one pieceشیکارکردنی ∣ax+b∣<r|ax + b| < r: یەک پارچە

Method
  1. Write the inequality as a double inequality: −r<ax+b<r-r < ax + b < r.

    وەک بنووسە: −r<ax+b<r-r < ax + b < r.

  2. Do the same operation to all three parts until xx stands alone in the middle. Dividing by a negative number reverses both signs (see multiplying by a negative number and Double inequalities).

  3. Write the answer as an interval and draw it: open circles for <<, filled dots for ≤\le.

Example 1. Solve ∣x−3∣<2|x - 3| < 2.

∣x−3∣<2|x - 3| < 2 شیکار بکە.

: {−2,5}\{-2, 5\} (the answer sheet lists it as {5,−2}\{5, -2\} — the same set, since order does not matter). Here braces are correct: the answer is two single numbers, not an interval. Check: ∣2⋅5−3∣=7|2 \cdot 5 - 3| = 7 ✓ and ∣2(−2)−3∣=∣−7∣=7|2(-2) - 3| = |-7| = 7 ✓.

A squared unknown: 19<x2<14\tfrac19 < x^2 < \tfrac14نەزانراوێکی دووجا: 19<x2<14\tfrac19 < x^2 < \tfrac14

Example 8 (homework on the slide). Solve 19<x2<14\tfrac19 < x^2 < \tfrac14. There are no bars yet — they appear when we take square roots. All three parts are ≥0\ge 0, and the square root keeps the order of non-negative numbers (rule 10), so we may take the square root of each part. Remember x2=∣x∣\sqrt{x^2} = |x|:

So the distance from xx to 0 is between 13\tfrac13 and 12\tfrac12. That happens on the right, 13<x<12\tfrac13 < x < \tfrac12, or on the left, −12<x<−13-\tfrac12 < x < -\tfrac13.

What is x2\sqrt{x^2} when xx is negative?

Show answer

The wrong step is x2=x\sqrt{x^2} = x. The square root of x2x^2 is ∣x∣|x|, so the middle line must read 13<∣x∣<12\tfrac13 < |x| < \tfrac12. That has a second piece on the left, −12<x<−13-\tfrac12 < x < -\tfrac13: for example x=−0.4x = -0.4 gives x2=0.16x^2 = 0.16, which lies between 19\tfrac19 and 14\tfrac14. The student's own margin note was right — half of the answer was missing.
