Many questions ask “at most”: at most 2 heads, at most 3 errors, a wait of at most 5 minutes. They all have the form P(X≤x)P(X \le x). The cumulative distribution function (CDF) answers all of them at once:

هەموویان بە شێوەی P(X≤x)P(X \le x)ن.

F(x)=P(X≤x)=∑xi≤xf(xi)F(x) = P(X \le x) = \sum_{x_i \le x} f(x_i)

F(x)F(x) collects the probability of every value up to and including xx. For a discrete XX it adds the pmf values f(xi)f(x_i) with xi≤xx_i \le x.

A taxi meter

A taxi meter shows the fare so far. It starts at 0, only ever goes up, and jumps each time you pass a pricing point. The CDF is a meter for probability: it starts at 0 far to the left, climbs by the pmf at each value of XX, and ends at 1.

Where the analogy stops working

A taxi fare has no upper limit; a CDF can never go above 1.

The notes, “at most” and cumulative frequency

You have met the same idea for data: the “less than” column of a frequency table, cumulative frequency, is a running total of frequencies. The CDF is its probability version.

Three coins (18,38,38,18\frac18, \frac38, \frac38, \frac18). What is P(X<2)P(X < 2), “fewer than 2 heads”?

The step formula

If XX takes the values x1<x2<⋯<xnx_1 < x_2 < \dots < x_n, then FF is flat between two values and jumps at each value. Written out in pieces:

F(x)={0x<x1f(x1)x1≤x<x2f(x1)+f(x2)x2≤x<x3⋮⋮f(x1)+⋯+f(xn)=1x≥xnF(x) = \begin{cases} 0 & x < x_1 \\ f(x_1) & x_1 \le x < x_2 \\ f(x_1) + f(x_2) & x_2 \le x < x_3 \\ \quad\vdots & \quad\vdots \\ f(x_1) + \cdots + f(x_n) = 1 & x \ge x_n \end{cases}

Each line adds one more pmf value. Below the smallest value F=0F = 0; from the largest value on, F=1F = 1.

This is a piecewise function, and because it is flat with jumps it is called a step function, like the floor function ⌊x⌋\lfloor x \rfloor.

Properties of every CDF

The two lectures list these properties. They hold for discrete and continuous variables alike:

  • 0≤F(x)≤10 \le F(x) \le 1: F(x)F(x) is a probability.
  • Non-decreasing: if a<ba < b then F(a)≤F(b)F(a) \le F(b). Moving right can only add probability, never remove it.
  • lim⁡x→−∞F(x)=0\lim_{x \to -\infty} F(x) = 0 and lim⁡x→∞F(x)=1\lim_{x \to \infty} F(x) = 1: far to the left nothing has happened yet; far to the right everything has.
  • At a jump, the value of FF is the upper end (the filled dot): FF is continuous from the right.
  • 0≤F(x)≤10 \le F(x) \le 1: F(x)F(x) .
F(a)≤F(b)F(a) \le F(b).
  • lim⁡x→−∞F(x)=0\lim_{x \to -\infty} F(x) = 0 و lim⁡x→∞F(x)=1\lim_{x \to \infty} F(x) = 1: لە چەپی دوور هێشتا هیچ ڕووی نەداوە؛ لە ڕاستی دوور هەموو شتێک ڕووی داوە.

Lecture 3 writes the two limits as F(−∞)=0F(-\infty) = 0 and F(∞)=1F(\infty) = 1; these are short forms of the limits above, since ±∞\pm\infty is not a number you can put into FF.

Probabilities of intervals: F(b)−F(a)F(b) - F(a)ئەگەری ماوەکان: F(b)−F(a)F(b) - F(a)

F(b)F(b) counts everything up to bb; F(a)F(a) counts everything up to aa. Their difference is what lies after aa, up to and including bb:

F(b)F(b) هەموو شتێک تا bb دەژمێرێت؛ F(a)F(a) هەموو شتێک تا aa.

P(a<X≤b)=F(b)−F(a)P(a < X \le b) = F(b) - F(a)

Example, with P(x)=x15P(x) = \frac{x}{15}: P(1<X≤3)=F(3)−F(1)=615−115=515=13P(1 < X \le 3) = F(3) - F(1) = \frac{6}{15} - \frac{1}{15} = \frac{5}{15} = \frac13 (the values 2 and 3).

نموونە، بە P(x)=x15P(x) = \frac{x}{15}: P(1<X≤3)=F(3)−F(1)=615−115=515=13P(1 < X \le 3) = F(3) - F(1) = \frac{6}{15} - \frac{1}{15} = \frac{5}{15} = \frac13 (بەهاکانی 2 و ⁦3⁩).

For a discrete variable, watch the ends. To include aa, subtract FF just below aa: P(1≤X≤3)=F(3)−F(0)=615P(1 \le X \le 3) = F(3) - F(0) = \frac{6}{15}. For three coins, P(0<X≤2)=F(2)−F(0)=78−18=68P(0 < X \le 2) = F(2) - F(0) = \frac78 - \frac18 = \frac68.

بۆ سێ دراو، P(0<X≤2)=F(2)−F(0)=78−18=68P(0 < X \le 2) = F(2) - F(0) = \frac78 - \frac18 = \frac68.

A smooth CDF for continuous variables

For a continuous variable there are no stems to add: probability is spread along an interval by a density ff. The running total becomes an area, written as an integral, and the staircase becomes a smooth curve.

F(x)=P(X≤x)=∫−∞xf(u) du,f(x)=dFdx=F′(x)F(x) = P(X \le x) = \int_{-\infty}^{x} f(u)\,du, \qquad f(x) = \frac{dF}{dx} = F'(x)

The letter uu inside the integral is a dummy name, so it does not clash with the upper limit xx. Going back, the density is the derivative of the CDF.

Two graphs side by side. Left, discrete: the staircase CDF of three coins with filled and open dots. Right, continuous: the smooth S-shaped curve F(x) = x³/27, rising from 0 at x = 0 to 1 at x = 3 and flat at 1 after that.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a discrete CDF as bars or stems. It is a staircase: flat steps, a jump at each value, 0 on the far left and 1 on the far right.
  • Open and closed dots the wrong way round. At a jump FF takes the upper value: F(1)=48F(1) = \frac48 for three coins, not 18\frac18.
  • Using << instead of ≤\le. F(x)=P(X≤x)F(x) = P(X \le x); for discrete variables P(X<x)P(X < x) is a different number.
  • Adding running totals. Each step adds one pmf value f(xi)f(x_i), not F(xi)F(x_i).
  • Wrong ends in F(b)−F(a)F(b) - F(a). It gives P(a<X≤b)P(a < X \le b): aa is left out and bb is kept.
F(x)=P(X≤x)F(x) = P(X \le x)؛ بۆ گۆڕاوی پچڕاو P(X<x)P(X < x) ژمارەیەکی جیاوازە.
F(b)−F(a)F(b) - F(a). P(a<X≤b)P(a < X \le b)
