This chapter goes deeper into . The basics are in the statistics course's lesson Linear algebra and matrices: a matrix is a rectangle of numbers in rows and columns, and its order (size) is written rows × columns, such as 3×23 \times 2. That lesson also names the basic types (row, column, zero, square, diagonal, scalar, identity, upper and lower triangular), shows row-times-column multiplication and the Transpose ATA^T, which turns every row into a column.

Here you add four new tools: a name for every single entry, matrices built from a rule, equal matrices, and three special : symmetric, involutory and orthogonal. If a word above is new to you, read that lesson first.

The address of an entry: aija_{ij}ناونیشانی ژمارەیەک: aija_{ij}

A big matrix needs a way to point at one of its numbers. We name the matrix with a capital letter, such as AA, and each entry with the small letter and two : aija_{ij} is the entry in row ii and column jj. The row number always comes first.

A=[a11a12⋯a1ca21a22⋯a2c⋮⋮⋱⋮ar1ar2⋯arc]=[aij]A = \begin{bmatrix} a_{11} & a_{12} & \cdots & a_{1c} \\ a_{21} & a_{22} & \cdots & a_{2c} \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\ a_{r1} & a_{r2} & \cdots & a_{rc} \end{bmatrix} = [a_{ij}]

A seat in the cinema

A cinema ticket says “row 7, seat 12”. You first find row 7, then walk along it to seat 12. An entry aija_{ij} is found the same way: first row ii, then column jj. A short way to remember the order is RC: Row, then Column.

Where the analogy stops working

Cinemas sometimes name rows with letters and count seats from either side. In a matrix both numbers are whole numbers that start at 1 in the top-left corner.

Take this 3×43 \times 4 matrix. Count down to the row, then across to the column:

A=[7−25049−16382−5]A = \begin{bmatrix} 7 & -2 & 5 & 0 \\ 4 & 9 & -1 & 6 \\ 3 & 8 & 2 & -5 \end{bmatrix}

a12=−2a_{12} = -2, a23=−1a_{23} = -1, a31=3a_{31} = 3, a34=−5a_{34} = -5. The last entry of any matrix is arca_{rc}: here a34a_{34}.

a12=−2a_{12} = -2، a23=−1a_{23} = -1، a31=3a_{31} = 3، a34=−5a_{34} = -5. دوایین ژمارەی هەر arca_{rc}ـە: لێرەدا a34a_{34}.

The order is often written under the name: A3×4A_{3 \times 4}. It simply counts rows and columns, so a single column of three numbers is a 3×13 \times 1 matrix and a single row of three numbers is 1×31 \times 3.

A matrix made by a rule

A matrix can be given by a rule instead of a list of numbers. The rule tells you how to work out aija_{ij} from its row number ii and column number jj. You have met one already: the times table in Linear algebra and matrices follows aij=i⋅ja_{ij} = i \cdot j.

Build the 3×33 \times 3 matrix with aij=i+ja_{ij} = i + jماتریکسی 3×33 \times 3 بە یاسای aij=i+ja_{ij} = i + j دروست بکە

    a11=1+1=2a_{11} = 1+1 = 2، a12=1+2=3a_{12} = 1+2 = 3، a13=1+3=4a_{13} = 1+3 = 4

  2. Row 2: put i=2i = 2ڕیزی 2: i=2i = 2 دابنێ

    a21=3a_{21} = 3، a22=4a_{22} = 4، a23=5a_{23} = 5

  3. Row 3: put i=3i = 3ڕیزی 3: i=3i = 3 دابنێ

The size must be given with the rule. With aij=2i−ja_{ij} = 2i - j and order 2×32 \times 3: row 1 is 2−1, 2−2, 2−32-1,\ 2-2,\ 2-3 and row 2 is 4−1, 4−2, 4−34-1,\ 4-2,\ 4-3, so the matrix is [10−1321]\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 & -1 \\ 3 & 2 & 1 \end{bmatrix}.

Equal matrices

Two matrices A=[aij]A = [a_{ij}] and B=[bij]B = [b_{ij}] are equal when both things are true: they have the same order m×nm \times n, and every pair of entries in the same place is equal, aij=bija_{ij} = b_{ij} for every ii and jj. The notes' example is a 2×22 \times 2 matrix compared with an exact copy of itself:

[24510]2×2=[24510]2×2\begin{bmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 5 & 10 \end{bmatrix}_{2 \times 2} = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 5 & 10 \end{bmatrix}_{2 \times 2}

The same numbers are not enough: [12]\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 \end{bmatrix} is 1×21 \times 2 and [12]\begin{bmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \end{bmatrix} is 2×12 \times 1, so they are not equal, even though both hold 1 and 2.

Equality is useful for finding unknowns: every pair of matching entries gives one equation.

[x+1452y]=[34510]  ⇒  x+1=3  ⇒  x=22y=10  ⇒  y=5\begin{bmatrix} x+1 & 4 \\ 5 & 2y \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 4 \\ 5 & 10 \end{bmatrix} \;\Rightarrow\; \begin{aligned} x + 1 &= 3 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 2 \\ 2y &= 10 \;\Rightarrow\; y = 5 \end{aligned}

The other two pairs (4=44 = 4, 5=55 = 5) are already equal, so x=2x = 2 and y=5y = 5.

Symmetric matrices: A=ATA = A^Tماتریکسە هاوجێیەکان: A=ATA = A^T

A AA is when aij=ajia_{ij} = a_{ji} for every ii and jj: the entry in row ii, column jj equals the entry in row jj, column ii. Because the transpose swaps exactly these two places, the short test is A=ATA = A^T.

A light switch

Press a light switch once and the light changes; press it again and everything is as before. An involutory matrix behaves the same way: doing it twice changes nothing. A mirror flip is the clearest example: [100−1]\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{bmatrix} turns a point (x,y)(x, y) into (x,−y)(x, -y), and flipping again brings it back.

Most matrices are not like this: doing them twice gives something new. And the identity II is involutory in the dullest way — it changes nothing even once.

Orthogonal matrices: AAT=IAA^T = Iماتریکسە ئۆرتۆگۆناڵەکان: AAT=IAA^T = I

A AA is when AAT=ATA=IAA^T = A^TA = I. Read the product AATAA^T row by row and it says two things about the rows of AA: each row times itself gives 1 (every row has length 1), and each row times a different row gives 0 (any two rows are at right angles). “Orthogonal” means “at right angles”.

AA ئۆرتۆگۆناڵە ئەگەر AAT=ATA=IAA^T = A^TA = I بێت.

The friendliest example is the matrix that turns points about the origin by an angle θ\theta (see Matrices move, turn and resize pictures):

R=[cos⁡θ−sin⁡θsin⁡θcos⁡θ],RRT=[cos⁡2θ+sin⁡2θcos⁡θsin⁡θ−sin⁡θcos⁡θsin⁡θcos⁡θ−cos⁡θsin⁡θsin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ]=[1001]R = \begin{bmatrix} \cos\theta & -\sin\theta \\ \sin\theta & \cos\theta \end{bmatrix}, \qquad RR^T = \begin{bmatrix} \cos^2\theta + \sin^2\theta & \cos\theta\sin\theta - \sin\theta\cos\theta \\ \sin\theta\cos\theta - \cos\theta\sin\theta & \sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix}

The diagonal is 1 because sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1 (see the Pythagorean identities); the other two entries cancel to 0.

Orthogonal matrices: AAT=IAA^T = Iماتریکسە ئۆرتۆگۆناڵەکان: AAT=IAA^T = I

Why it matters: A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^Tبۆچی گرنگە: A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T

Why it matters: since ATA=IA^TA = I, the inverse of an orthogonal matrix is its transpose, A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T. Undoing a turn by θ\theta is a turn back by θ\theta, and the computer gets it for free just by swapping rows and columns. Orthogonal matrices also keep lengths and angles, which is why games and graphics programs use them for turning objects. The inverse lesson lists them with the other matrices with easy inverses.

Summary

  • aija_{ij} is the entry in row ii, column jj — row first. A matrix with rr rows and cc columns is written A=[aij]r×cA = [a_{ij}]_{r \times c}.
  • A rule such as aij=i+ja_{ij} = i + j plus an order defines a whole matrix.
  • Equal matrices: the same order and aij=bija_{ij} = b_{ij} everywhere; each matching pair gives one equation.
  • Symmetric: A=ATA = A^T (aij=ajia_{ij} = a_{ji}), a mirror across the ; every diagonal matrix is symmetric.
  • Involutory: A2=IA^2 = I, so A−1=AA^{-1} = A (the notes' “involuntary” is the wrong word).
  • Orthogonal: AAT=ATA=IAA^T = A^TA = I — rows of length 1 at right angles — so A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T (easy inverses); rotation matrices are orthogonal. The notes' 3×33 \times 3 example needs −26-\tfrac{2}{\sqrt6} at the start of row 2.
بە rr ڕیز و cc ستوون بە A=[aij]r×cA = [a_{ij}]_{r \times c} دەنووسرێت.
  • یاسایەکی وەک aij=i+ja_{ij} = i + j لەگەڵ قەبارەیەک تەواو دیاری دەکات.
A=ATA = A^T (aij=ajia_{ij} = a_{ji})، ئاوێنەیەک بە دەوری ؛ هەموو تیرەیی هاوجێیە.
  • خۆپێچەوانە: A2=IA^2 = I، بۆیە A−1=AA^{-1} = A («involuntary»ی تێبینییەکان وشەیەکی هەڵەیە).
AAT=ATA=IAA^T = A^TA = I — ڕیزی درێژی 1 بە گۆشەی وەستاو — بۆیە A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T (پێچەوانەی ئاسان)؛ ئۆرتۆگۆناڵن.
Review questions
Why must a symmetric matrix be square?

Because ATA^T of an m×nm \times n matrix is n×mn \times m, and equal matrices need the same order, so m=nm = n.

How do you find the inverse of an orthogonal matrix?

Transpose it: A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T, because ATA=IA^TA = I.

وەربگرە: A−1=ATA^{-1} = A^T، چونکە ATA=IA^TA = I.

Is the identity matrix involutory?

Yes: I2=II^2 = I. It is also symmetric and orthogonal.
